To evaluate the extent of Sea-Nine 211 (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-3(2H) isothiazolone), one of the alternating organic booster compound used in antifouling paint to replace TBT, on marine benthic bivalve, we injected Sea-Nine 211 to clam, Pseudocardium sachalinensis, and then determined some xenobiotics metabolizing enzyme activities, especially EROD (ethoxyresorufin deethylase) and MROD (methoxyresorufin demethylase), in digestive gland during 4 day-exposure period. Moreover, the results were compared with those of TBT exposed clam. CYP1A1 dependant EROD activity in both the Sea-Nine 211 and the TBTC exposure groups showed no significant differences compared to those of the solvent control group. CYP1A2 dependant MROD activity in Sea-Nine 211 exposure group was significantly induced, but no significant difference was obtained in the TBTC exposure group. These results indicate that Sea-Nine 211 demonstrated a tendency to induce MROD activity, while TBTC inhibits the activities of this enzyme.
Objectives: This study was designed to investigate whether long-term, low-level exposure to monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) induced insulin resistance. Methods: The subjects were 110 male workers who were occupationally exposed to styrene, toluene, and xylene. One hundred and ten age-matched male workers who had never been occupationally exposed to organic solvents were selected as a control group. Cytokines, which have played a key role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, and oxidative stress indices were measured. Assessment of exposure to MAHs was performed by measuring their ambient levels and their urinary metabolites in exposed workers, and the resulting parameters between the exposed group and non-exposed control groups were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in general characteristics and anthropometric parameters between the two groups; however, total cholesterol, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels were significantly higher in the exposed group. Phenylglyoxylic acid levels showed significant association with tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, total oxidative status, and oxidative stress index via multiple linear regression analysis. Further, there was a negative correlation between methylhippuric acid levels and total anti-oxidative capacity, and there was a significant relationship between MAHs exposure and fasting glucose levels, as found by multiple logistic regression analysis (odds ratio = 3.95, 95% confidence interval = 1.074-14.530). Conclusion: This study indicated that MAHs increase fasting glucose level and insulin resistance. Furthermore, these results suggested that absorbing the organic solvent itself and active metabolic intermediates can increase oxidative stress and cytokine levels, resulting in the changes in glucose metabolism and the induction of insulin resistance.
1,4-Dioxane is used as a solvent for lacquers, paints, varnish removers, dye baths and printing compositions. And it is also used for detergent preparations, cosmetics, deodorants and fumigants. A method is described for the determination of 1,4-dioxane in water samples by GC/MS. The extraction recoveries were studied for some solvents and solvent volume ratio were investigated using r-butyl methyl ether (MTBE). Optimum condition was obtained by the liquid-liquid extraction using the 10 mL of MTBE for 10 mL of water. Method detection limit of 1,4-dioxane in the 20 mL of water samples was 0.05 ng/mL. It could be determined in the range of 0.24∼240 ng/mL in treated water, and in the range of 0.69∼81.9 ng/mL in raw water, respectively. Risk assessments with 1,4-dioxane exposure by drinking water ingestion were carried out. Based on the results of analysis, chronic daily intake of 1,4-dioxane was 2.22${\times}$10$\^$-4/ mg/kg/day and excess cancer risk was calcu-lated to be 2.44${\times}$10$\^$-6/.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of chronic low dose organic solvent exposures in the industries towards then neurobehavioral functions of workers. Subjective symptoms on neurobehavioral function as well as a visual reaction time test (Flicker test) were administered to 94 exposed and 162 unexposed workers in a oil refinery and some other auto-repair shops. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Symptom complaints were higher and Flicker test values were lower in exposed workers than in unexposed workers. 2. Flicker valus were Inversely correlated with urinary Hippuric acid concentration in exposed workers(r=-0.26, p<0.05). 3. Flicker valus were inversely co..elated with Subjective symptom score(r=-0.15, p<0.05). Low Flicker value were also related with some subjetive symptoms such as 'Dimmed vision', 'Nightmare', 'Weakness on extrimity' in workers as a whole. While symptoms of 'Dimmed vision ', 'Nightmare' only observed among exposed workers.

Graphene oxide powders prepared by two different drying processes, freeze drying and spray drying, were studied to compare the effect of the drying method on the physical properties of graphene oxide powder. The graphene oxide dispersion was prepared from graphite by chemical delamination with the aid of sulfuric acid and permanganic acid, and the dispersion was further washed and re-dispersed in a mixed solvent of water and isopropyl alcohol. A freeze drying method can feasibly minimize damage to the sample, but it requires a long process time. In contrast, spray drying is able to remove a solvent in a relatively short time, though this process requires exposure to a high temperature for a rapid evaporation of the solvent. The powders prepared by freeze drying and spray drying were characterized and compared by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and by an elemental analysis. The graphene oxide powders showed similar chemical compositions; however, the morphologies of the powders differed in that the graphene oxide prepared by spray drying had a winkled morphology and a higher apparent density compared to the powder prepared by freeze drying. The graphene oxide powders were reduced at $900^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of $N_2$. The effect of the drying process on the properties of the reduced graphene oxide was examined by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy.

With the increasing demand on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for water purification worldwide, the number of disposed membrane elements is expected to increase accordingly. Thus, recycling and reuse of end-of-life RO membranes should be a global environmental action. In this work, we aim to reuse the spent RO membrane for nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) process by subjecting the spent membrane to solvent and oxidizing solution treatment, respectively. Our results showed that solvent-treated RO membrane could perform as good as commercial NF membrane by achieving similar separation efficiencies, but with reduced water permeability due to membrane surface fouling. By degrading the polyamide layer of RO membrane, the transformed membrane could achieve high water permeability (85.6 L/㎡.h.bar) and excellent rejection against macromolecules (at least 87.4%), suggesting its reuse potential as UF membrane. More importantly, our findings showed that in-situ transformation on the spent RO membrane using solvent and oxidizing solution could be safely conducted as the properties of the entire spiral wound element did not show significant changes upon prolonged exposure of these two solutions. Our findings are important to open up new possibilities for the discarded RO membranes for reuse in NF and UF process, prolonging the lifespan of spent membranes and promoting the sustainability of the membrane process.
Headspace micro solid phase extraction using mulberry paper bag (HS-MPB-$\mu$-SPE) has been developed and validated for the analysis of volatile flavor compounds from five spice by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). HS-MPB-$\mu$-SPE was performed with adsorbent particles enclosed inside a mulberry paper bag. Four different kinds of adsorbents such as Tenax TA, Porapack Q, dimethylpolysiloxane and polyethylene glycol were tested. The extraction solvents compared were petroleum ether, methylene chloride, and chloroform. Better results were obtained when Tenax TA and petroleum ether were used. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) were in the range of 1.3 ng/mL and 4.3 ng/mL, respectively, for o-cymene as a model compound of monoterpene. Proposed method showed good reproducibility (3.3%, RSD) and good recoveries (94.0%). The HS-MPB- μ-SPE is very simple to use, inexpensive, rapid, requires small sample amounts and solvent consumption. Because the solvent for extraction is reduced to only a very small volume (0.6 mL), there is minimal waste or exposure to toxic organic solvent and no further concentration step. This method allows successful characterization of the headspace in contact with the five spice sample. Strong trans-anethole from star anise or fennel is a characteristic flavor of five spice powders. HS-MPB-$\mu$-SPE combined with GC/MS can be a promising technique for the broad spectrum measurement of volatile aroma compounds from solid spices.
As one of the REACH obligations, the extended safety data sheet (eSDS) should be communicated within the supply chain under the REACH Regulation. Based on technical guidance documents published on the ECHAs website and survey of EU's recent REACH-related informations, this paper includes a study on details of how to develop exposure scenarios (ES) such as structure of ES, process of ES develpoment, standard workflows and key input data to develop ES with an introduction of eSDS concept. This paper also contains an overview on operational conditions (OCs) and risk management measures (RMMs) that are what to consider when building an ES. The structure of Chesar (Chemical Safety Assessment and Report tool) developed by European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is studied with a review of the available exposure estimation tools for workers, environment and consumers. Case example of generic exposure scenario (GES) for organic solvent is presented. To guide Korean EU-exporting companies, their participating roles in three steps of preparing ES are addressed.
