  • The rutile phase of TiO2 forms a stable phase at high temperatures compared to anatase phase, but the stable temperature range of anatase changes depending on the synthesis conditions. In this study, nano-sized TiO2 was synthesized by the Sol-gel method using TiOSO4 and a mixed solvent of ethanol and distilled water, and the phase change of anatase and rutile according to pH and heat treatment temperature was investigated. Changes in the ratio of anatase and rutile were observed by changing the pH (3, 5, 7, 9) and heat treatment temperature (500, 600, 700, 800, 900℃) conditions of the prepared TiO2. As a result of observing these changes through XRD and FE-SEM analysis, anatase TiO2 at 500℃ and rutile TiO2 at 900℃ were observed. According to the pH, at these intermediate temperatures of 600, 700 and 800℃, the ratio of anatase and rutile changes. At 700℃, it was concluded that pH = 3~5 had a larger ratio of anatase TiO2, and pH = 7~9 had a larger ratio of rutile TiO2.

  • The antioxidant and anti-neuroinflammatory activities of water, 30, 70, and 100% ethanol extracts of leaves of three different species of bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra, P. bambusoides, and Sasa borealis) were investigated. The levels of total polyphenol and flavonoid were measured, and antioxidant activity was evaluated using various antioxidant assays (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced BV2 microglial cell activation was used to evaluate the anti-neuroinflammatory properties of the bamboo leaf extracts. Treatment with both aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed no cytotoxicity in BV-2 microglial cells. Pre-treatment of BV-2 cells with bamboo leaf extracts significantly inhibited LPS-induced excessive production of nitric oxide in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, phytochemical analysis based on the extraction solvent showed that caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, and tricin are the principal constituents of all three bamboo leaf extracts. Therefore, our findings suggest that bamboo leaf extract contains potent antioxidants and anti-neuroinflammatory compounds that can be used as potential therapeutic agents for the treat neuroinflammatory diseases.

  • Three-type PVC membranes denoted by AEM-1, AEM-2, and AEM-3 with a cross-linked anion-exchange group were prepared by substitution reaction of PVC with triethyldiamine (TEDA), 1,4-dimethylpiperazine (DMP), and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (BIB) in cyclohexanone, respectively. We confirmed the successful preparation of the AEM-1, AEM-2, and AEM-3 via ionic conductivity (S/cm), water uptake (%), contact angle, ion-exchange capacity (meq/g), thermal properties, SEM and XPS analysis, respectively. The electrochemical capacitor experiments using PVC membrane with cross-linked anion-exchange group in organic electrolytes were performed. The prepared AEM-1, AEM-2 AEM-3 have a good stability by charge and discharge performance in organic electrolyte. As a result, the AEM-2 and AEM-3 membrane based on PVC prepared by the solvent casting method after substituent reaction is suitable for the use as a separator in organic electrochemical capacitor (supercapacitor).

  • The objective of this study was to analyze volatile and aroma-active compounds in Korean wild chive (Allium monanthum Maxim.) cultivated in open-fields or greenhouse systems using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation-gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry and GC-olfactometry. Aroma-active compounds were evaluated using aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). Twenty-two aroma-active compounds with log2 flavor dilutions (FD) of 1-10 were detected in Korean wild chive, which was cultivated in an open-field or a greenhouse. 2-Isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine ("earthy"), 2-sec-butyl-3-methoxypyrazine ("earthy", "musty"), and dipropyl disulfide ("sulfurous") were the most predominant aroma-active compounds with log2FD of 9-10; this was followed by dimethyl trisulfide ("onion-like") and (E)-1-propenyl propyl disulfide ("fresh onion-like"). The "sulfurous", "earthy", "pungent", and "cabbage-like" aroma notes were strong in Korean wild chive. More intense "pungent" odors were detected in Korean wild chive cultivated in an open-field, whereas more intense "cabbage-like" odors were detected in Korean wild chive cultivated in a greenhouse.

  • In this study, the anti-stain effect of the Traditional Myoung-oil, which has been reproduced through traditional method, the Clean Myoung-oil, which was developed in an eco-friendly method through scientific analysis of Traditional Myoung-oil, and the perilla oil, which is the raw material of Myoung-oil and is currently used as a finishing agent when repairing wooden cultural properties was evaluated. As a result of the evaluation, perilla oil showed almost no anti-stain effect, whereas both types of Myoung-oil showed high anti-stain effect. However, it was confirmed that the anti-stain effect was significantly reduced after 4 weeks of exposure to the strain when Myoung-oil was diluted with terpene oil, a natural solvent. Thus, it was considered that the amount of treatment in the wood affected the anti-stain effect of Myoung-oil. In other words, in constructing wooden buildings, Myoung-o il is more suitable as a finishing agent to suppress mold growth than perilla oil. And, in order to increase the applicability of Myoung-oil, it is suggested that additional research on the optimal treatment amount and treatment method that can inhibit mold growth inhibition in outdoor environments is necessary.

  • Herein, we selectively recovered Zn and produced ZnSO4 from electric arc furnace dust using a hydrometallurgical process. The analysis of the properties of the electric arc furnace dust revealed that the Fe content (9.9%) was relatively low while the Mn content (19%) was high as compared to the composition of general dust. Therefore, an appropriate hydrometallurgical process was designed based on the properties of the raw materials. In the leaching process involving the use of 1.6 M sulfuric acid and 20% solid-liquid ratio at 60℃ for 1 h, 85% of the Zn and Mn got dissolved while the Fe was not leached. To selectively recover Zn, a solvent extraction process using D2EHPA as the extractant was chosen, and 99% of the Zn was extracted using 0.8 M D2EHPA with 32% saponification and an O/A ratio of 2 using counter-current 3-stage extraction. Mn was entirely scrubbed with an aqueous sulfuric acid solution of pH 1.5. Finally, Zn was concentrated and stripped using 1.5 M sulfuric acid at an O/A ratio of 4 using counter-current 4-stage stripping. The stripping solution contained 40 g/L of Zn, and 99.9% of ZnSO4∙H2O was obtained by vacuum distillation.

  • Domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin produced naturally by diatoms, is responsible for incidents of amnesic shellfish poisoning. In this study, a modified analytical method was established to determine domoic acid in seafood using solid phase extraction cleanup and optimizing the amount of sample and extraction solvent to reduce interference effects. The modified method using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was validated using three seafood matrices (mussel, red snow crab, and anchovy) at three concentrations (1, 2, and 4 mg/kg) and compared to the Food Code method. Compared to the Food Code method, the modified method showed better performance in terms of linearity (R2>0.999), detection limit (0.02-0.03 mg/kg), quantification limit (0.05-0.09 mg/kg), intra-/inter-day accuracy (86.2-100.4%), and intra-/inter-day precision (0.2-4.0%). Furthermore, the method was successfully applied for the analysis of 87 seafood samples marketed in Korea, and DA was detected at a low concentration of 140 ㎍/kg in one anchovy sample. These results suggest that the modified method can be used for routine determination of DA in seafood.

  • In this study, we improved the vitamin C test method and reviewed data on the adjustable range of chromatography conditions for quantification. First, we adjusted the mobile phase conditions such as solvent composition, salt concentration, pH and column temperature and in particular, it was confirmed through an improved test method that the peak derived from the buffer solution could be clearly separated from the target component, vitamin C by adjusting the pH. The retention time of vitamin C was partially changed by adjusting the column diameter, length and particle size but the number of theoretical plates indicated similar values and did not affect the separation and quantitative analysis of the target component. The flow rate according to the column specifications was derived from the equation proposed by the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug administration) and the Korean MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety), and evaluation of the applicability to vitamin complexes showed high selectivity for vitamin C even with altered stationary phase conditions and flow rates. In conclusion, vitamin C can be optimally separated and detected by changing the chromatographic method conditions and it was confirmed that the mobile and stationary phase conditions of liquid chromatography can be slightly adjusted in case the assay method uses an isocratic elution.

  • Hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a valuable plant that is widely used worldwide for food and medicinal purposes. This study compared ethanol extracts of five native Korean varieties (Yuwol-cho, Subi-cho, Sumihyang, Gounbit, and Chilseong-cho) and five improved varieties (Dabok, Cheongyang, Chungseong, Olbokhap, and Shin-honggildong) of peppers cultured in Korea. The extracts were analyzed for color difference, polyphenol content, and their antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antithrombotic activities. The extracts of the improved varieties exhibited higher levels of redness and lower levels of yellowness compared to the native varieties. Polyphenol and flavonoid content analysis revealed significantly higher levels in the Yuwol-cho and Sumihyang varieties, which also exhibited scavenging activities in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl anion-, 2,2-azobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) cation-radical scavenging, and reducing power assay. The Chilseong-cho, Yuwol-cho, and Dabok varieties showed significantly higher nitrite scavenging activity. Antidiabetic activity based on α-glucosidase inhibition was observed in the Subi-cho, Sumihyang, and Gounbit extracts. Evaluation of antithrombotic activity showed that the Yuwol-cho extract prolonged thrombin time by 1.61 times compared to the solvent control at a concentration of 5 mg/ml, while the Dabok extract prolonged prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time by 1.33 times and 2.21 times, respectively. All pepper extracts showed no erythrocyte hemolysis activity up to a concentration of 5 mg/ml. Our results suggest that native Korean peppers have the potential to serve as valuable sources of antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antithrombotic agents. This research also indicates the possibility of replacing improved pepper varieties, which incur significant seed usage fees, with native Korean pepper varieties.
