Deposition and characterization of compositional gradient CrNx coatings prepared by arc ion plating

  • Compositional gradient CrNx coatings were fabricated using arc ion plating in Ar/$N_2$ gaseous mixture by gradually increasing $N_2$ flux rate from 0 to 120 SCCM. The effect of negative substrate bias on the film microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated with XRD, GDOES, and SEM. The results show that substrate bias has an important influence on film growth and microstructure of gradient CrNx coatings. The coatings mainly crystallized in the mixture of hexagonal $Cr_{2}N$ and fcc CrN phases. By increasing substrate bias, film microstructure evolved from an apparent columnar structure to an equiaxed one. With increasing substrate bias, deposition rate first increased, and then decreased. The maximum of deposition rate was 15 nm/min obtained at a bias of -50V.

  • The effect of the DMAB concentration, temperature, deposition time, and stabilizer concentration on the precipitation reaction of the electroless nickel plating using dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as reducing agent was investigated to by the weight gain and electrochemical method. The deposition rate was dependent with DMAB concentration. The polarization resistance of the precipitation reaction was reduced with DMAB concentration. The precipitation reaction rate of Ni-B deposits was controlled by the oxidation rate of DMAB as the source of electron. The boron content of the deposit was constant at about 5.5wt%, even when DMAB concentration in the solution was increased. The effect of temperature and stabilizer ($Pb(NO_3)_2$) concentration on deposition rate was shown to have co-dependent behaviors.

  • Metal nano-wire arrays on Cu-coated seed layers were fabricated by aqueous solution method using sulfate bath at room temperature. The seed layers were coated on Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) bottom substrates by electrochemical deposition technique, length and diameter of metal nano-wires were dominated by controlling the deposition parameters, such as deposition potential and time, electrolyte temperature. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) was used as a template to prepare highly ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu multilayer magnetic nano-wire arrays. This template was fabricated with two-step anodizing method, using dissimilar solutions for Al anodizing. The pore of anodic aluminum oxide templates were perfectly hexagonal arranged pore domains. The ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu systems nano-wire arrays were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu systems nano-wires had different preferred orientation. In addition, these nano-wires showed different magnetization properties under the electrodepositing conditions.

  • The coating of conductive polypyrrole (Ppy) on nonconductive ceramic substrates was performed by polymerization of pyrrole (Py) in an aqueous solution. The Ppy film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and conductivity measurements. Electrophoretic deposition of bimodal alumina suspension prepared with a phosphate ester was performed using Ppy film as a cathode. Fabrication of alumina ceramics with irregular shapes or complicated patterns were also attempted by sintering the deposits together with the Ppy coated substrates in air.

  • Photoreactive multilayer films were prepared using long-chin alkyl diesters of p-phenylenediacrylic acid(p-PDA). In spite of the absence of hydrophilic groups in these molecules, they formed stable monolayers on the water surface when mixed with arachidic acid. Surface showed the presence of a condecsed phase and these monolayer could be transferred onto a substrate with Y-type deposition. The UV spectra of mixed multilayer films showed of absorption peak compared with that in solution. The linear relationship between absorbanoe and the number of layers supports the successful formation of multilayer films.

음극표면 pH 측정에 의한 Ni-P합금의 전착기구 고찰 (Investigation of the mechanism of Ni-P alloy deposition using by in-situ surface pH measurement during electrodeposition)

  • To better understand the codeposition mechanism of phosphorous, surface pH and potential of cathode were measured during electrodeposition of Ni-P alloys. The pH of cathode surface was measured using a flat-bottom glass pH electrode and a 500 mesh gold gauze as cathode. The cathode surface pH was increased with increasing the current density and always higher than the pH in the bulk solution. As a result of overplotting the surface pH and cathode potential on the Pourbaix diagram, it was found that cathode surface shift to the domain of predominant of $H_2$$PO3$-or $H_2$$PO_2$-. Additionally, new deposition mechanism was suggested that $H_2$ $PO_2$- and $H_2$$PO_3$- play important roles in the deposition reaction of Ni-P alloys.

Preparation of Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconducting Film on Ag Substrate by an Electrophoretic Deposition Method

  • The preparation of $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ thick film on Ag substrate by electrophoretic deposition was directly studied. Electrophoretic deposition was carried out in solution, which was composed of presintered $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ powder, sodium, and 2-propanol as a solvent. The deposited thick films were heat-treated in $O_2$ at 815$^{\circ}$C for 12 hours and at 450$^{\circ}$C for 12 hours. We succeeded in obtaining superconducting $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ films on Ag substrate. Even though the chemical reactions at the $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$/Ag interface occurred in the range of 10 ${\mu}$m, superconductivity was not depressed. The thickness of the films was in the range of 60-80 ${\mu}$ m. The characteristics of the films were examined by electric resistance measurements, X-ray diffraction, and SEM observations.

Adsorption of nitrate onto nitrogen-doped activated carbon fibers prepared by chemical vapor deposition

  • Nitrogen-doped activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared by chemical vapor deposition using melamine powder and acetonitrile for introducing quaternary nitrogen on the commercial ACFs, subsequently heated at $950^{\circ}C$ and activated by steam. Adsorption experiments of nitrate in aqueous solution were also conducted to evaluate adsorption capacity of the prepared ACFs using ion chromatography. The amount of introduced nitrogen content and nitrogen species on activated carbon fibers was examined by CHN elemental analyzer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. As a result, adsorption capacity of quaternary nitrogen-doped ACF (ST-ML-AN-ST) was 0.75 mmol/g, indicating ca. two-times higher than that of untreated ACF (0.38 mmol/g). According to the adsorption data, the Langmuir isotherm model was the best fit. The prepared samples were also regenerated using hydrochloric acid. After regeneration, the adsorption capacity of the nitrogen-doped ACF (ST-ML-AN-ST) showed ca. 80% on average, implying that a portion of nitrates was adsorbed on the prepared ACFs irreversibly.

Verification of a Dynamic Compartment Model for the Tritium Behavior in the Plants After Short HTO Release Using a BIOMOVS II Scenario

  • A dynamic compartment model was required for the prediction of radiological consequences of the tritiated vapor released from the nuclear facility after an accident. A computer code, ECOREA-T, was developed by incorporating the unit models for the evaluation of tritium behavior in the environment. Dry deposition of tritiated vapor from the atmosphere to the soil was calculated using a deposition velocity. Transport of tritium from the atmosphere to the plant was calculated using a specific activity model, and the result was compared with the Belot's analytic solution. Root uptake of tritiated water from the soil and formation of OBT from T were considered in the model. The ECOREA-T code was verified by comparing the results from the other computer codes using a scenario developed through BIOMOVS II study. The results showed good agreements.

전기영동 증착법을 이용한 Black Phosphorus Nano Flake 리튬이온 배터리 (Black Phosphorus Nano Flake Lithium Ion Battery Using Electrophoretic Deposition)

  • Black phosphorus (BP) is a potential candidate for an anode in lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and the large interlayer spacing in the monolayered phosphorene form, allowing for lithium intercalation/deintercalation. In this study, large-scale exfoliation of bulk BP was accomplished using a solution of NaOH and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), yielding phosphorene, which can be assembled into nanoflakes using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Through the systematic addition of NaOH and subsequent sonication, BP nanoflakes were obtained in high yields by EPD, allowing for the integration of these nanoflakes into an anode in the film state. Anodes with a charge/discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g at a rate of 200 mA/g were obtained, which are promising for battery applications through various post-film treatments.
