Recently, Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSS), which is one of the In- and Ga- free absorber materials, has been attracted considerable attention as a new candidate for use as an absorber material in thin film solar cells. The CZTSS-based absorber material has outstanding characteristics such as band gap energy of 1.0 eV to 1.5 eV, high absorption coefficient on the order of 104 cm-1, and high theoretical conversion efficiency of 32.2% in thin film solar cells. Despite these promising characteristics, research into CZTSS based thin film solar cells is still incomprehensive and related reports are quite few compared to those for CIGS thin film solar cells, which show high efficiency of over 20%. I will briefly overview the recent technological development of CZTSS thin film solar cells and then introduce our research results mainly related to sputter based process. CZTSS thin film solar cells are prepared by sulfurization of stacked both metallic and sulfide precursors. Sulfurization process was performed in both furnace annealing system and rapid thermal processing system using S powder as well as 5% diluted H2S gas source at various annealing temperatures ranging from $520^{\circ}C$ to $580^{\circ}C$. Structural, optical, microstructural, and electrical properties of absorber layers were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Hall-measurement, TRPL, etc. The effects of processing parameters, such as composition ratio, sulfurization pressure, and sulfurization temperature on the properties of CZTSS absorber layers will be discussed in detail. CZTSS thin film solar cell fabricated using metallic precursors shows maximum cell efficiency of 6.9% with Jsc of 25.2 mA/cm2, Voc of 469 mV, and fill factor of 59.1% and CZTS thin film solar cell using sulfide precursors shows that of 4.5% with Jsc of 19.8 mA/cm2, Voc of 492 mV, and fill factor of 46.2%. In addition, other research activities in our lab related to the formation of CZTS absorber layers using solution based processes such as electro-deposition, chemical solution deposition, nano-particle formation will be introduced briefly.
The applicability of models based on fractal morphology to characterize $(Ba\;Sr)TiO_{3}$ thin film surfaces was investigated. The fractal morphology of coated barium strontium titan oxide thin film surfaces was described using fractal dimension from scanning electro microscopy image. The $(Ba\;Sr)TiO_{3}$ coating were deposited on silicon wafers using $(Ba\;Sr)TiO_{3}$ solution and spin coater. BST solution was composited by mol ratio, and then spin-coated from 3 times to 5 times coating on $Pt/SiO_{2}/Si$ substrate. Qualitative thin film analysis was performed with scanning electro microscopy (SEM), and surfaces parameters such as average grain diameter, roughness exponent and fractal dimension were determined.

Micro-patterns of $Pb(Zr_{0.53}Ti_{0.47})O_3$, PZT, thin films with a MPB composition were deposited on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrate from molecular-designed PZT precursor solution by using self-assembledmonolayer(SAM) as a template. This method includes deposition of SAM followed by the optical etching by exposing the SAM to the UV-light, leading to the patterned SAM as a selective deposition template. The pattern of SAM was formed by irradiating UV-light to the SAM on a substrate and/or patterned PZT thin film through a metal mask for the selective deposition of patterned PZT or lanthanum nickel oxide (LNO) precursor films from alkoxide-based precursor solutions. As a result, patterned ferroelectric PZT and PZT/LNO thin film capacitors with good electrical properties in micrometer size could be successfully deposited.
A Rhodamine-based fiber-optic sensor has been developed to detect mercury ions in aqueous environments. The fiber-optic sensor was composed of a mercury-sensing thin film, plastic optical fibers, and a spectrometer. The mercury-sensing thin film with the synthesized Rhodamine derivatives was fabricated with Sol-Gel process. A light emitted by a light source is guided by plastic optical fibers into the thin film in an aqueous solution and a reflected light is analyzed with the spectrometer. The experiment exhibits that an absorbance in the thin film is increased as mercury concentration is increased in the solution and the absorbance by mercury is higher than that by other heavy metals. The fiber-optic sensor exhibits high chromogenic phenomenon of mercury ions among various heavy metals and the correlation between absorbance and mercury concentration in the aqueous environments.
In past decades, the themal inkjet (TIJ) printer has been widely used as one of the most well-known digital printing technology due to its low cost, and high printing quality. Since the printing speed of TIJ printers are much slower than that of laser printers, however, there has been intensive efforts to raise the printing speed of TIJ printers. One of the most plausible methods to raise the printing speed of TIJ printers is to adopt a page-wide array TIJ printhead. To accomplish this goal, the high efficiency inkjet heating resistor films should be developed to settle the high power consumption problem of a page-wide array TIJ printhead. In this study, we investigated noble metal based multicomponent thin film resistor films prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) for a high efficiency inkjet printhead. Design concept, preparation, material properties of noble metal based multicomponent thin films will be discussed in terms of mutlfunctionality.
A femtosecond laser pre-annealing process based on indium zinc oxide (IZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) is fabricated. We demonstrate a stable pre-annealing process to analyze surface structure change of thin films, and we maintain electrical stability and improve electrical performance. Furthermore, dynamic electrical characteristics of the IZO TFTs were investigated. Femtosecond laser pre-annealing process-based IZO TFTs exhibit a field-effect mobility of $3.75cm^2/Vs$, an $I_{on}/I_{off}$ ratio of $1.77{\times}10^5$, a threshold voltage of 1.13 V, and a subthreshold swing of 1.21 V/dec. And the IZO-based inverter shows a fast switching behavior response. From this study, IZO TFTs from using the femtosecond laser annealing technique were found to strongly affect the electrical performance and charge transport dynamics in electronic devices.

Recently, aqueous method has attracted lots of attention because it enables the solution-processed metal oxide thin film with high electrical properties in low temperature fabrication condition to various flexible devices. Focusing the development of aqueous route, many researchers are only focused on metal oxide materials. However, for expansive application of the aqueous-based metal oxide films, the systematic study of performance change with process variables for the development of aqueous-based metal oxide insulator film is urgently required. Here, we propose importance of process variables to achieve high electrical-performance metal oxide insulator based on the aqueous method. We found that the significant process variables including precursor solution temperature and humidity during the spincoating process strongly affect chemical, physical, and electrical properties of $AlO_x$ insulators. Through the optimization of significant variables in process, an $AlO_x$ insulator with a leakage current value approximately $10^5$ times smaller and a breakdown voltage value approximately 2-3 times greater than un-optimized $AlO_x$ was realized. Finally, by introducing the optimized $AlO_x$ insulators to solutionprocessed $InO_x$ TFTs, we successfully achieved $InO_x/AlO_x$ TFTs with remarkably high average field-effect mobility of ${\sim}52cm^2V^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ and on/off current ratio of 106 at fabrication temperature of $250^{\circ}C$.
Silicate-silsesquioxane or siloxane-silsesquioxane hybrid thin films are strong candidates as matrix materials for ultra low dielectric constant (low-k) thin films. We synthesized the silicate-silsesquioxane hybrid resins from tetraethoxyorthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) through hydrolysis and condensation polymerization by changing their molar ratios ([TEOS]:[MTMS] = 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7), spin-coating on Si(100) wafers. In the case of [TEOS]:[MTMS] 7:3, the dielectric permittivity value of the resultant thin film was measured at 4.30, exceeding that of the thermal oxide (3.9). This high value was thought to be due to Si-OH groups inside the film and more extensive studies were performed in terms of electronic, ionic, and orientational polarizations using Debye equation. The relationship between the mechanical properties and the synthetic conditions of the silicate-silsesquioxane precursors was also investigated. The synthetic conditions of the low-k films have to be chosen to meet both the low orientational polarization and high mechanical properties requirements. In addition, we have investigated a new solution-based approach to the synthesis of semiconducting chalcogenide films for use in thin-film transistor (TFT) devices, in an attempt to develop a simple and robust solution process for the synthesis of inorganic semiconductors. Our material design strategy is to use a sol-gel reaction to carry out the deposition of a spin-coated CdS film, which can then be converted to a xerogel material. These devices were found to exhibit n-channel TFT characteristics with an excellent field-effect mobility (a saturation mobility of ${\sim}\;48\;cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$) and low voltage operation (< 5 V). These results show that these semiconducting thin film materials can be used in low-cost and high-performance printable electronics.
We studied the influence of different types of metal electrodes on the performance of solution-processed zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin-film transistors. The ZTO thin-film was obtained by spin-coating the sol-gel solution made from zinc acetate and tin acetate dissolved in 2-methoxyethanol. Various metals, Al, Au, Ag and Cu, were used to make contacts with the solution-deposited ZTO layers by selective deposition through a metal shadow mask. Contact resistance between the metal electrode and the semiconductor was obtained by a transmission line method (TLM). The device based on an Al electrode exhibited superior performance as compared to those based on other metals. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) allowed us to measure the work function of the oxide semiconductor to understand the variation of the device performance as a function of the types metal electrode. The solution-processed ZTO contained nanopores that resulted from the burnout of the organic species during the annealing. This different surface structure associated with the solution-processed ZTO gave a rise to a different work function value as compared to the vacuum-deposited counterpart. More oxygen could be adsorbed on the nanoporous solution-processed ZTO with large accessible surface areas, which increased its work function. This observation explained why the solution-processed ZTO makes an ohmic contact with the Al electrode.
In this study, the nanosized ZnS thin films that can be used for fabrication of blue light-emitting diodes, electro-optic modulators, and n-window layers of solar cells were grown by the solution growth technique (SGT), and their surface morphology and film thickness and grain size dependence on the growth conditions were examined. Based on these results, the quantum size effects of ZnS were systematically investigated. Governing factors related to the growth condition were the concentration of precursor solution, growth temperature, concentration of aq. ammonia, and growth duration. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the ZnS thin film obtained in this study had the cubic structure ($\beta$-ZnS). With decreasing growth temperature and decreasing concentration of precursor solution, the surface morphology of film was found to be improved. Also, the film thickness depends largely on the ammonia concentration. In particular, this is the first time that the surface morphology dependence of ZnS film grown by SGT on the ammonia concentration is reported. The energy band gaps of samples were determined from the optical transmittance values, and were shown to vary from 3.69 eV to 3.91 eV. These values were substantially higher than 3.65 eV of bulk ZnS. It was also shown that the quantum size effect of SGT grown ZnS is larger than that of the ZnS films grown by most other growth techniques.
