  • The localized corrosion resistance of the Ni-based Inconel 718 alloy after solution heat treatment was evaluated using electrochemical techniques in a solution of 25 wt% NaCl and 0.5 wt% acetic acid. Solution heat treatment at 1050 ℃ for 2.5 hours resulted in an increased average grain diameter. Both Ti carbides (10 ㎛ diameter) and Nb-Mo carbides (1 - 9 ㎛ diameter) were distributed throughout the material. Despite heat treatment, the shape and composition of these carbides remained consistent. An increase in solution temperature led to a decrease in pitting potential value. However, the pitting potential value of solution heat-treated Inconel 718 was consistently higher than that of as-received Inconel 718 at all tested temperatures. Localized corrosion initiation occurred at 0.4 VSSE in a temperature environment of 80 ℃ for both as-received and solution heat-treated Inconel 718 alloys. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis indicated that the composition of the passive film formed on specimen surfaces remained largely unchanged after solution heat treatment, with O1s, Cr2p3/2, Fe2p3/2, and Ni2p3/2 present. The difference in localized corrosion resistance between as-received and solution heat-treated Inconel 718 alloys was attributable to microstructural changes induced by the heat treatment process.

  • Compressive strength, sulfate deterioration factor(SDF) and length change of 5 types of mortars immersed in sodium sulfate solution were observed. As the results of tests, it was found that the sulfate resistance of blended cement mortars were superior to that of portland cement mortars. Pore volume with diameter larger than 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ of 5 types of pastes indicated that the micro-structures of blended cement pastes were denser, due to pozzolan reaction and latent hydraulic properties, than those of portland cement pastes. The XRD, ESEM, EDS and TG analyses demonstrated that the reactants such as ettringite and gypsum were significantly formed in portland cement pastes. Besides, compared with the $Ca(OH)_2$ content of ordinary portland cement pastes immersed in water and sodium sulfate solution, the $Ca(OH)_2$ contents of fly ash blended cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement paste were about 58% and 28% in water, and 55% and 20% in sodium sulfate solution, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate total current under steady-state conditions for a material undergoing corrosion using the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) technique, taking into account the presence of solution resistance and double layer capacitance. The analysis involving linearization of the Tafel curve allowed for the estimation of corrosion parameters. Results showed that the output signal was dependent on fundamental frequencies and their multiples. In addition, the output signal almost manifested itself at frequencies that were sums of fundamental frequencies of the applied sinusoidal signal. The harmonics calculated showed a significant shift from the principal frequency of input signals. The investigation involved the influence of corrosion current and anode-to-cathode Tafel slope ratio on faradaic and non-faradaic currents (including the average and RMS). The model presented showed both qualitative and quantitative improvements over the previously developed EFM technique that ignored the influence of solution resistance and the double layer capacitance while assuming the applied DC potential corresponded to the corrosion potential of the corroding material.

  • Pitting corrosion of TiN film deposited on Inconel 600 by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) was investigated. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) tests were conducted in order to determine the pit nucleation potentials, Enp, of the TiN-deposited sample and the bare Inconel 600 in deaerated NaCl solution at 25, 135 and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The effects of the TiN film thickness, the solution temperature and the Cl- concentration on Enp were studied. Enp of the TiN-deposited sample which had the film thickness above 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were higher than those of the bare Inconel 600 by 300~600mV at all the solution temperatures, implying the pitting resistance improvement of the TiN film. The morphologies of the pits generated after immersion test were examined with a scaning electron microscopy. The higher was the solution temperature, the more corrosion products, mainly composed of Cr and Ni oxides, were formed.

  • The linear polarization resistance method is one of the widely used techniques for the corrosion rate monitoring in the water circulating systems of plants. The measurement is simple and rapid, so that a continuous on-line monitoring is possible without any shutdown of plants. A 2-electrode polarization corrosion rate measurement system was installed in a laboratory using a data acquisition board and PC. The signal processing parameters were optimized for the accurate corrosion rate measurement, and the polarization resistance was compensated with the solution resistance measured by the high frequency sine wave signal of an output channel. The precision of corrosion rate data was greatly improved by removing the initial noise signals on measuring the polarization resistance.

  • Recently, household electronic industries require environmentally-friendly and highly functional steels in order to enhance the quality of human life. Customers especially require both excellent corrosion and abrasion resistant anti-fingerprint steels for digital TV panels. Thus POSCO has developed new functional electro-galvanized steels, which have double coated layers with organic-inorganic composites on the zinc surface of the steel for usage as the bottom chassis panel of TVs. The inorganic solution for the bottom layer consists of inorganic phosphate, magnesium, and zirconium compounds with a small amount of epoxy binder, and affords both improved adhesion properties by chemical conversion reactions and corrosion resistance due to a self-healing effect. The composite solution for the top layer was prepared by fine dispersion of organic-inorganic ingredients that consist of a urethane modified polyacrylate polymer, hardener, silica sol and a titanium complex inhibitor in aqueous media. Both composite solutions were coated on the steel surface by using a roll coater and then cured through an induction furnace in the electro-galvanizing line. New anti-fingerprint steel was evaluated for quality performance through such procedures as the salt spray test for corrosion resistance, tribological test for abrasion resistance, and conductivity test for surface electric conductance regarding to both types of polymer resin and coating weight of composite solution. New composite coated anti-fingerprint steels afford both better corrosion resistance and abrasion properties compared to conventional anti-fingerprint steel that mainly consists of acrylate polymers. Detailed discussions of both composite solutions and experimental results suggest that urethane modifications of acrylate polymers of composite solutions play a key role in enhanced quality performances.

  • The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) characteristics of polymer composites were investigated with the nano-sized carbon black particles using solution tasting and melt compounding methods. The polymeric PTC composites should the electrical threshold at 35 wt% for the melt compounding method and 40 wt% for the solution casting method. The ethylene vinylacetate copolymer (EVA) composite showed a gradual increase of resistance as a function of temperature and showed a maximum at the polymer molting point. The resistance of the high-density polythylene (HDPE) composite remains unchanged with temperature but started to Increase sharply near the melting point of HDPE and showed a maximum resistance at the melting point of HDPE. The dispersion of nano-sized carbon black particles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and low resistance after electrical threshold, and both methods exhibited a well dispersed morphology. When the electric current was applied to the PTC composites, the resistance started increasing at the curie temperature and further increased until the trip temperature was roached. Then the resistance remained stable over the trip temperature. The secondary increase started at T$\sub$m/ of matrix polymer and kept increasing up to the trip temperature.

  • Galvanizing method has been extensively used to the numerous constructional steels such as a guard rail of high way, various types of structural steel for ship building and various types of steels for the industrial fields etc.. However, the galvanized structures would be inevitably corroded rapidly with increasing exposed time because an acid rain due to environmental contamination has been much dropped more and more. Therefore, it has been made an effort to improve the corrosion resistance of the galvanizing film through various methods. In this study, comparison evaluation on the corrosion resistance of three types of the samples, that is, the hot dip galvanizing with pure zinc(GI), the hot dip galvanizing of alloy bath with zinc and aluminum(GL) and the pure zinc galvanizing steel immersed again to chromate treatment bath(Chro.)were investigated using electrochemical methods in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The Chro. and GI samples exhibited the highest and lowest corrosion resistance respectively in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution, however, the GI sample revealed the highest impedance at 0.01 Hz due to its high resistance polarization caused by corrosion products deposited on the surface, while Chro. sample exhibited the lowest impedance at 0.01 Hz because of little corrosion products on the surface. Consequently, it is suggested that the chromate treated steel has a better corrosion resistance in acid environment compared to pure galvanizing(GI) or galvalume(GL) steels.

  • The demand for cold rolled steel (CR) for structural members is gradually increasing. If no surface treatment (coating for corrosion resistance) for CR is conducted, its use is very limited because CR is vulnerable to corrosion. Therefore, we need to develop a coating solution to provide high corrosion resistance for CR. In this study, an organic/inorganic coating solution with Si and Ti (Si polysilicate 7 wt.% + Urethane 13 wt.% + Ti amorphous 0.5 wt.%; LR-0727(1)) was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of CR under a salt spray test. The specimens with the LR-0727(1) coating were heat treated in a drying oven at $120{\sim}210^{\circ}C$for 5 min. The corrosion resistance was investigated using a salt spray test of 7 h. In addition, an adhesive test was conducted. Rust showed under a heat treatment of $150^{\circ}C$, but no vestiges were found over $160^{\circ}C$. The specimens with heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$ or more did not experience delamination. From these results, it is considered that the temperature limit for optimum heat treatment is $160^{\circ}C$ considering energy efficiency.

  • PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) was applied to modify the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this study. The mixed solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) was used as the electrolyte, and 0 - 0.05 g/L of Ca-GP (Glycerol Phosphate Calcium salt) was added in the electrolyte as an additive. PEO treatment was conducted at a current density of 30mA/cm2 for 5 minutes using a DC power supply. The surface properties were identified by SEM, XRD and surface roughness analyses, and the corrosion resistance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests. In addition, the biocompatibility was evaluated by immersion test in SBF solution. As the concentration of Ca-GP was increased, the surface morphology was denser and more uniform, and the amount of Ca and the thickness of oxide layer increased. Only Mg peak was observed in XRD analysis due to very thin oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of PEO-treated samples increased with the concentration of Ca-GP in comparision with the untreated sample. In particular, the highest corrosion resistance was identified at the group of 0.04g Ca-GP through potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests in saline solution (0.9 wt.%NaCl). During the immersion in saline solution, pH rapidly increased at the beginning of immersion period due to rapid corrosion, and then increase rate of pH decreased. However, the pH value in the SBF temporarily increased from 7.4 to 8.5 during the day, then decreased due to the inhibition of corrosion with HA(hydroxyapatite) formation.
