[ $BARODON^{(R)}$ ] is a multi-purpose, high functional alkali solution made by mixing and liquid-ionizing silicon, calcium, sodium, borax, organic carbon chemicals and silver. In this study, we have investigated the apoptotic potential and mechanistic insights of $BARODON^{(R)}$ in human gastric cancer cell line (AGS cells). In MTT assay, $BARODON^{(R)}$ reduced cell viability in AGS cells. Morphological features of apoptosis with marked cytoplasmic vacuolation and appearance of apoptotic peaks in flow cytometry were observed in AGS cells with$BARODON^{(R)}$ treatment. In addition, $BARODON^{(R)}$ induced apoptosis of stomach cancer cell is related to bax up-regulation, caspase 7 protease activation and subsequent cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). These results suggest that BARODON can induce the apoptosis of AGS cells through modulation of bcl-2 family and the activation of intrinsic caspase cascades, indicating that it is potentially useful as a anti-cancer agent.
This study was conducted as the basic research for the replacement of Blast Furnace Slag, Red Mud, Silica Fume, etc., with cement as a solution to the problems arising from the global warming caused by the generation of $CO_2$, and conducted the experimental review to examine the feasibility of matrix having properties identical to those of cement by using the Blast Furnace slag, Red mud, Silica fume, and alkali-activator. For this, by using the the inorganic binder, such as Blast Furnace Slag, Red Mud, Silica Fume, etc., and NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and others as the cement substitute material, the strength characteristic according to the mixture time variation was performed in the tentative experiment. Based on the preceding experiment, this study performed the experiment to analyze the strength properties of hardener through the curing by air-dry temperature, curing by temperature in water, coating curing, and Korean paper curing. For the water curing at $80^{\circ}C$, the compressive strength and flexural strength were found to be the most excellent at the age of the 28th day, and furthermore, it was found that the non-cement hardener could be made, which is considered to affect the production of eco-friendly concrete.
This study was conducted to investigate the anti-oxidative abilities of certain products in Ulleungdo, such as sweet pumpkin (Danhobak), goat's beard (Samnamul), and Aster glegni (Bugigangyi), quality characteristics of sweet pumpkin taffy containing these products. Total polyphenolic contents of the Samnamul water and ethanol extracts were 2.95 mg% and 3.57 mg%, respectively, whereas those of the Bugigangyi water and ethanol extracts were 2.77 mg% and 2.75 mg, respectively. However, the total polyphenolic contents of the pumpkin water and ethanol extracts were 0.32 mg%. Reducing power ($OD_{700}$) of the Samnamul and Bugigangyi water and ethanol extracts (0.01%, w/v) was in the range of 1.62~1.91, which was higher compared to those of sweet pumpkin (0.02~0.03). Electron donating abilities (EDA) of the 0.01% Samnamul and Bugigangyi water and ethanol extracts were in the range of 74.91~79.21%, whereas those of the sweet pumpkin water and ethanol extracts were 3.79~14.99%. Optimum mixing ratio of steamed sweet pumpkin and water taffy for the preparation of taffy was 25:75 (w/w), as evaluated by sensory evaluation. Optimum adding ratio of Samanmul and Bugigangyi ethanol extracts to pumpkin taffy were 0.4% and 3%, respectively. However, the adding ratios of Samanmul and Bugigangyi powder to pumpkin taffy were 0.5~1.0% (w/w) and 1% (w/w), respectively.

Recently the world wide efforts reduce occurrence of $CO_2$; global warming main reason. The aim of this study is to improve recycling rate of the fly ash (FA) and fused waste slag (FWS) from the power plant and to carbonate under supercritical condition ($40^{\circ}C$, $80kgf/cm^2$ pressure, 60 min) for $CO_2$ fixation. Specimens of mortar with various mixing ratios of FA, FWS (from 100:0 to 20:80 in 5 steps of 20 % reduction each time), distilled water and 3 M NaOH alkali activators were prepared. As a result, the proportion of weight change ratio increases with CaO content, to 12 % after carbonation under the supercritical condition. There is difference of compressive strength between the carbonated and the alkali activator mortar specimens. The stabilization of $CO_2$ fixation through carbonation which could confirm the applicability of the eco-friendly materials without loss of compressive strength.

Various compositions of iron oxide based materials as a cathode of lithium secondary battery have been fabricated and tested with electrochemical method. A layered form of $LiFeO_2$ was synthesized by mixing and heating the initial materials of $FeCl_3\;6H_2O,\;LiOH$ and NaOH at low temperature. The effect of changing the precursors composition was investigated. As a result, when increasing the additive amount of NaOH, the capacity of the electrode is decreased but the performance and declining rate of capacity became smaller. $LiFeO_2$ synthesized with the weight ratio of $NaOH/FeCl_3/LiOH,\;2/1/7$ showed the largest capacity, but the discharging efficiency was sharply decreased after 30 cycles. Charge-discharge tests of lithium cells with $LiFeO_2$ cathode having the layer structure were performed. This cell showed the reversibility in the range of 1.5-4.5V of cell voltage. By using CPR method, chemical diffusion coefficients were measured in 1M $LiPF_6/EC/DEC$ solution. The value of chemical diffusion coefficient decreased with increasing the lithium content x, In 0.5$10^{-11}^cm^2/s$.
A part of used cables, such as electric and communication cables has already been recycled by using simple processing methods. However, it has been found that the main problems in recycling of the used cables are insufficient treatment of fine stranded wires and low recovery of copper by air separation process. It has been shown that copper can be effectively separated from the PE using a solvent treatment method. In the present study, the used communication wires having diameter of 0.4 mm are treated in the mixing solution of toluene and water at $86^{\circ}C$ for about 10 minutes. In the solvent treatment, the copper wires recovered have 10~15mm length, which are much longer than that of 1~2mm length copper wires recovered by air table concentration method used in current recycling plants. The process consisting of cutting, air separation and electrostatic separation would be recommendable for the treatment of mixed cables. In this investigation, fine copper powders can also efficiently be recovered from insulation materials using electrostatic separator at the conditions of 20~50RPM roller speed and 15~30KV high DC power.

The $CaTio_3$powder with perovskite structure was synthesized by mixing anatase $TiO_2$and $Ca(OH)_2$powders as starting materials, and KOH or NaOH as mineralizer, followed by hydrothermal method. The change of crystal structure, particle shape and size of the synthesized $CaTiO_3$powder was investigated with kind and concentration of mineralizer. It was found that the spherical particles of 0.7 $\mu$m were obtained when using 1N KOH and the hexahedrons particles of 3$\mu$m were obtained for the case of using 10 N KOH. With increasing KOH concentration, the particle shape was changed from sphere to hexahedrons and its size also increased. When using 1 N NaOH, the powder was consisted of 0.5~1 $\mu$m particle in size, whereas hexahedrons of 1~4 $\mu$m and whiskers more than 10$\mu$m in size was obtained for the 10 N NaOH solution. With increasing NaOH concentration, the particle shape was varied from hexahedrons to whiskers, showing the similar result with the KOH case. It was confirmed from EDS analysis that Na element, which was detected in hexahedrones was not contained in the whiskers.

Flue gas desulfurization gypsum(FDG) is produced when removing sulfur oxides from combustion gas generated by coal power plant. However, the recycling of FDG is still limited to the certain purposes. In order to expand the possible application of FDG, this study aims to utilize FDG as an activator for ground granulated blast furnace slag. FDG produced by dry- and wet-process were used for the experiments. Slag paste specimens were produced by mixing with deionized water and simulated pore solution, and the role of FDG as an activator for blast furnace slag was evaluated using hydration study by XRD analysis and compressive strength development. According to the results, dry-type FDG was found to work as an activator for blast furnace slag without the presence of soluble alkalis. However, wet-type FDG needs assistance by soluble alkalis in order to work as an activator for blast furnace slag. It was also found that the substitution of dry- and wet-type FDG into blast furnace slag can increase the 28 day compressive strength of slag paste. It is expected that efficient and economical recycling of FDG will be possible if quantitative analysis of strength enhancement according to substitution rate of both dry- and wet-type FDG.

In Dongnam area, Cretaceous igneous rocks, such as diorite, porphyritic granite, and quartz porphyry intruded Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, such as Myobong slate and Pungchon limestone. The Dongnam Fe-Mo skarn deposits were imposed on the diorite(endoskarn) and the Myobong slate(exoskarn). The ore deposits consist mainly of magnetite and molybdenite with small amounts of sulfides, such as galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. The igneous rocks show nearly constant $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb(18.80{\sim}19.06)$ and $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb(15.71{\sim}15.72)$ ratios. Their $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ ratios higher than the typical ratios of orogene suggest that the igeneous rocks were formed from lower crust(or mantle) - derived magma excessively contaminated by upper crustal materials such as high radiogenic Precambrian basement rocks. The lead isotopic compositions of the igneous rocks, the Pungchon limestone, and the ore minerals show a well defined linear in $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ - $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ plot. The lead isotopic compositions of the igneous rocks are similar to those of magnetite and galena, which were formed at early skarn stage and significantly lower than those of altered quartz porphyry, molybdenites, and pyrite, which were formed at late epithermal alteration stage. Considering the systematic variation of the lead isotopic compositions in the ore minerals according to hydrothermal stages, the variation may be due to a relative variation in surrounding rock(Pungchon limestone) involvement in hydrothermal ore solution leaching the surrounding rock. Therefore, the variation of the lead isotopic compositions in ore minerals can be modeled in terms of the mixing of the leads derived from the igneous rocks as low radiogenic source and the surrounding rock(Pungchon limestone) as high radiogenic source.
The superstructured $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$ was prepared by sol-gel process using a mixed solution of lithium acetate (LA) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB). The gel phase was obtained by adding ammonia water ($NH_4OH/TNB$ mole ratio of 0.35) and water ($H_2O/TNH$ mole ratio of 3.5) into the clear sol that was prepared after mixing TNB/LA mole ratio of 5/4 with AA/TNB mole raio of 0.125. It was found that the most suitable $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$ was obtained by heat treatment of xerogel at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 hrs. The synthesized $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$ showed an initial discharge capacity of 174 mAh/g and the capacity loss of about 27.3% during 25 cycles in Li/1M $LiClO_4(in\;PC)/Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$ at current density of $0.15mA/cm^2$ and the voltage range of 0.5~3.0 V.
