  • Solid state grain growth (SSCG) is a method of growing large single crystals from seed single crystals by abnormal grain growth in a small-grained matrix. During grain growth, pores are often trapped in the matrix and remain in single crystals. Aerosol deposition (AD) is a method of manufacturing films with almost full density from nano grains by causing high energy collision between substrates and ceramic powders. AD and SSCG are used to grow single crystals with few pores. BaTiO3 films are coated on (100) SrTiO3 seeds by AD. To generate grain growth, BaTiO3 films are heated to 1,300 ℃ and held for 10 h, and entire films are grown as single crystals. The condition of grain growth driving force is ∆Gmax < ∆Gc ≤ ∆Gseed. On the other hand, the condition of grain growth driving force in BaTiO3 AD films heat-treated at 1,100 and 1,200 ℃ is ∆Gc < ∆Gmax, and single crystals are not grown.

  • To study interface between crystals grown and molten state in the crusible. Pulling and rotating rate of the shaft were varied in LiF crystal growth by Czochralski method. Lower speed of the pulling and rotating rate increased the degree of convexity in solid-liquid interface and higher speed of the pulling and rotating rate decreased it. Optimum condition of LiF crystal growth obtained as pulling rate was 6.5cm/h when it rotated as 46rpm.

  • MgFe2O4 formation, grain growth in Fe2O3, Fe solid-solution limit in MgO for MgO-Fe2O3 mixture were studied by means of investigating the distribution of phases and compositions in reaction area between MgO and Fe2O3. The reaction area at equlibrium was composed with MgO-FexO matrix and MgFe2O4 precipitation, MgFe2O4 was formed by precipitating from MgO-FexO matrix dependent on oxygen partial pressure. Fe contents was exponentially decreased with diffusion distance in MgO single crystal, and thus Fe solid-solution limitation in MgO was about 4mol%. The grain growth rate in Fe2O3 base was increased with Mg contents diffused from MgO single crystal.

  • NdAl3(BO3)4 have been developed for miniature solid state laser material. Single crystals of NdAl3(BO3)4 were grown by TSSG technique using BaB4O7 flux. The effects of growth conditions such as cooling rate, seed orientation and rotation speed on crystal quality and the morphology were studied. At the cooling rate of 2.4$^{\circ}C$/day and the crystal rotation speed of 30~40rpm with the seed orientation in <201> or <100> directions, transparent and light violet colored crystals in size of 10$\times$15$\times$20㎣ with well developed {010}, {111}, {111}, {021}, {001}, {102}, {112}, {021} faces were obtained. By X-ray diffraction analysis, the space group was determined as C2/c, and the X-ray powder data was obtained.

  • Principles in the synthesis of small-sized high-quality crystals for the experimental condensed matter physics will be discussed in this paper. Synthesis process and cautions will be introduced especially for the synthesis methods which can be easily accessible to researchers. Starting from the solid state reaction which is the most common synthesis method, I will explain the quartz tube sealing that is crucial for making polycrystalline materials as well as single crystals in various conditions. Finally, basics of single crystal growth and various techniques will be introduced on the whole for the researchers who are not familiar with the material synthesis.

  • ${\beta}-$Ag_2S$(high temperature phase) was grown by solid/vapour reaction growth based on solid -state electrochemisty. In S/V growth, one of the reactants, silver ion, is supplied to the growth surface through the solid $Ag_2S$ from one side and the other reactants, surfur, is transported in the phase of vapour from the other side. With the sufficient supply of S vapour, the growth rate increased as increasing $T_d$(decomposition temperature of $Ag_2S$) and ${\Delta}T$ between $T_d$ and $T_g$(temperature of growth surface). At low S vapour pressure, growth rate decreased with decreased vapour pressure and ${\beta}-$Ag_2S$ was grown in the form of whisker, when Ag+ion is sufficiently supplied. The measured values of electronic conductivity of ${\beta}-$Ag_2S$ showed that electronic conductivity of the poly crystal was larger than that of single crystal.

  • Single crystal growth of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ by the solid state crystal growth method was attempted. Seed crystals of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ were pressed into pellets of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ + 2 wt% $BaCO_3$ and heat-treated at temperatures between $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$ for up to 100 hours. Instead of single crystal growth taking place on the seed crystal, BaO diffused into the seed crystal and reacted with it to form a polycrystalline reaction layer of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$. The microstructure, chemical composition and structure of the reaction layer were studied using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman scattering and confirmed to be that of $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$. XRD showed that the reaction layer shows a strong degree of orientation in the (h00)/(hk0) planes in the sample sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ layers with a degree of orientation in the (hk0) planes could also be grown by heat-treating an ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ seed crystal buried in $BaCO_3$ powder.

  • This work investigated the electromechanical performance of a cantilevered vibration energy harvester incorporating the single crystal PMN-PZT, manufactured with the most recent technology of solid-state single crystal growth. The performances of single crystal PMN-PZTs with two different crystallographic axes such as [011] and [001] are compared with those of PZT ceramics. From the investigations, it is shown that the [001]-poled PMN-PZT is advantageous for the excitations containing single dominant frequency component, while the single crystal [011]-$d_{32}$ is superior in terms of the energy storage density and energy conversion efficiency.

  • L-Arginine semi-oxalate (LASO) single crystal has been grown by solution growth technique at room temperature. The crystal structure and lattice parameters were determined for the grown crystal by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Photoluminescence studies confirm the violet fluorescence emission peak at 395 nm. Optical constants like band gap, refractive index, reflectance, extinction coefficient and electric susceptibility were determined from UV-VIS-NIR spectrum. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and ac conductivity of the compound were calculated at different temperatures and frequencies to analyze the electrical properties. The solid state parameters such as plasma energy, Penn gap, Fermi energy and polarizability were calculated to analyze second harmonic generation (SHG). Nonlinear optical property was discussed to confirm the SHG efficiency of the grown crystal.

Single crystal PMN-PZTs with two different crystallographic axes such as [011] and [001] were considered. For the [011] orientation, because material properties such as the stiffness, piezoelectric strain coefficients are not the same in the directions normal to the crystallographic axis, the effects of the transversely anisotropy on the magnitude and frequency bandwidth of output power were also analyzed.
