  • A rolled steel for structural parts and lead bronze alloy were bonded each other by a new semi-solid diffusion bonding process to investigate the effect of the process parameters, for example bonding temperature and bonding time, on the interface characteristics, and bonding behavior. It can be possible that manufacture of the bonded steel/lead bronze which has a cylindrical shape with inserted the lead bronze alloy into the steel ring by the diffusion bonding process under the semi-solid condition of the lead bronze alloy without any pressure and flux. It has been know that the control of the amount of the liquid phase in semi-solid lead bronze alloy was very important to obtain soundness interface, since the shear strength of the bonded steel/lead bronze at 850℃ for 60 minutes under the condition of about 40% of the liquid phase in the lead bronze alloy shows maximum value, 210 MPa. The shear strength increases with an increase in bonding time and show maximum value, and then decreases.

  • Reinforced twice than width of foundation with SIC under steel piles drived in cohesion soil and in the coal-limestone which heavily fractured. To analyze behaviour characteristic of steel piles, load transfer test was performed to steel piles attached with strain gauges to axial direction. After it passed 49days, dynamic load test was performed to set-up effect of steel piles bearing capacity. The results of test were compared to each other. According to the results, as the skin friction of steel pile was on the same condition, end bearing capacity of steel piles established on SIC solid of cemented milk in cohesion soil was three times than steel piles established on SIG solid of cemented milk in heavily fractured coal- limestone. After piles were driven and passes 49days, in case of piles on SIG solid of comented milk in cohesion soil the increaes of allowable bearing capacity was 442.9% and allowable bearing capacity of piles on SIG solid of cemented milk in heavily fractured coal-limestone increased 22.4%.

  • Interaction between the external thin-walled steel tube and the internal concrete core significantly increases the bending resistance of composite beams and beam-columns in comparison with the steel or concrete members. There is presented a developed method for design of hollow and solid concrete-filled steel tubular beams based on test data, which gives better agreement with test results than EC4 because its limitation to take an increase in strength of concrete caused by confinement contradicts the recommendation of 6.7.2(4) that full composite action up to failure may be assumed between steel and concrete components of the member. Good agreement between the results of carried out experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations allows recommending the proposed method to use in design practice.

  • This study presents a way to generate and manage engineering information by applying steel bridge information model with 3D shape to existing application program. ACIS solid modeling kernel is used to visualize 3D geometric shape of steel bridge on the AutoCAD program. The shape information of 3D solid model can be connected to structural design information of steel bridge by an application module based on information model. The application module for manipulating steel bridge information can be easily developed by ObjectARX programming library supporting functional expansion of AutoCAD program. End-users can use the application module without any additional environmental setup on the AutoCAD. Thus this study facilitates information management of steel bridge by using ACIS solid modeler and ISO/STEP methodology.

  • Non-used waste heat has recently been paid special attention due to several global warming regulation and energy cost rising. In this study, therefore, thermal energy storage system which uses a solid type heat media has been investigated about the possibility of heat accumulation and heat release for thermal energy storage system. 35kWh of bench-scale thermal storage system was used to investigate the characteristics of the solid type heat media. From the result, it is shown that a solid type heat media should be divided to supply constant heat to the customers' side. It is also shown the flow direction should be considered to reduce temperature difference between top and bottom sides in the thermal storage system.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) structures play a significant role in the construction industries. An embeddable solid-state reference electrode (ESSRE) was used to evaluate the corrosion status of steel rebar in the concrete of various cover thicknesses that exposed to the maritime environment (3.5 % NaCl) in this study. From the open circuit potential measurement (OCP), the passive state, the corrosion uncertainty, and the 90% probability of corrosion state of the steel rebars in the concrete were monitored by ESSRE. From the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method, severe corrosion was observed at the exposure period of 1510, 1847, 2350, and 3020 h for C10, C15, C20, and C30 concrete, respectively. The results confirm that the ESSRE can be useful to identify the corrosion occurrence and severe corrosion of steel rebar embedded in different cover depth concrete structures.

  • The fixed solid catalysts such as glass bead, steel mesh, and $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead were used to investigate effect of radical production at different frequencies. The radical production rate at 300 kHz was faster than that at 35 kHz without solid, but the tendency was changed with the presence of glass bead. The presence of glass beads create non-continuous points between the solid and liquid phases leading to increased formation of cavitation bubbles. However, the radical production decreased when steel mesh was used at 35 kHz although the surface area of contact with liquid was same when glass bead was used. Hence the solid catalyst did not always enhance the radical production. The radical production using $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead was dramatically increased at 35 kHz due to the breakage of $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead. Therefore the radical productions at 300 kHz using fixed solid catalysts generally increased while at 35 kHz the results fluctuated according to the experimental conditions.

  • The friction and wear behaviors of fluorine-containing compounds such as perfluoropolyethers (PFPE), phosphazenes (X-1P), ionic liquids as lubricants for steel/seel, steel/ceramic, ceramic/ceramic were investigated using a SRV tester and a one-way reciprocating friction tester both in ball-on-disc configuration. It was found that the three fluorine-containing lubricants could reduce friction coefficient and wear volume effectively. The effectiveness of the three lubricants in reducing wear volume could be ranked as ionic liquids>X-1P>PFPE. Tests also showed that aryloxyphosphazene with polar substituent as a lubricant of steel/steel pair gave low wear, while aryloxyphosphazene with nonpolar group on the phenyl pendant led to high wear. The morphology and the tribo-chemical reaction of the worn surfaces were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS). XPS analyses illustrated the formation of iron fluoride in steel/steel system with the lubrication of both phosphazenes and ionic liquids.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the seismic performance of solid steel reinforced concrete (SRC) frames with special-shaped columns that are composed of SRC special-shaped columns and reinforced concrete beams. For this purpose, two models of two-bay and three-story frame, including an edge frame and a middle frame, were designed and tested. The failure process and patterns were observed. The mechanical behaviors such as load-displacement hysteretic loops and skeleton curves, load bearing capacity, drift ratio, ductility, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation of test specimens were analyzed. Test results show that the failure mechanism of solid SRC frame with special-shaped columns is the beam-hinged mechanism, satisfying the seismic design principle of "strong column and weak beam". The hysteretic loops are plump, the ductility is good and the capacity of energy dissipation is strong, indicating that the solid SRC frame with special-shaped columns has excellent seismic performance, which is better than that of the lattice SRC frame with special-shaped columns. The ultimate elastic-plastic drift ratio is larger than the limit value specified by seismic code, showing the high capacity of collapse resistance. Compared with the edge frame, the middle frame has higher carrying capacity and stronger energy dissipation, but the ductility and speed of stiffness degradation are similar. All these can be helpful to the designation of solid SRC frame with special-shaped columns.

  • In this paper, finite element stamping analysis was carried out for the front lower arm to examine the applicability of solid element with damage theory to predict shear fracture phenomena induced by sheared edge as well as deformation mechanisms. Mechanical properties related to deformation and damage theory were determined from tensile test. Shear fracture was predicted by normalized Cockcroft-Latham model with initial imposition of the damage value along the sheared edge. Simulation results illustrated that the analysis with solid element and damage theory predicted edge profile, strain distribution, and forming load more accurately than the analysis with shell element. Simulation with solid element can also predict the shear fracture more exactly comparing to analysis with shell element and forming limit curve.
