  • The solid propellants have been most widely used for the military rockets or missiles all over the world and the efforts have been focused on the enhancement of propellant performance up to 1980s. lately in company with the distinguished development in the intelligence and communication technology, the more accurate guidance as well as maneuverability has been required in the military weapon system. To meet the requirements such as a high maneuverability, insensitiveness, or stealth of missile, the researches have been doing to develop the solid propellants which have a quality of ultra-fast burning rate, insensitiveness, low signature or the like.

  • Notable are the burning rate characteristics of solid propellant burning at extremely high pressure(10000-20000 psia). The burning rate test using closed bomb shows the discontinuous increment around 4000 psia so that the exponent of burning rate(n) is almost double, from 0.4 to 0.8. The pressure-increasing rate of the test motor is about 300 times as high as that of the motor operating at the conventional pressure, less than 2000 psia, is, therefor the burning rate is augmented about 5-50 times. The performance prediction reflecting the pressure-change-rate effect are fairly comparable with the test data at various test conditions.

  • A cracked solid propellant would have failure or fracture of rocket because of excessive combustion according to increase of burning area, therefore it is important to evaluate the fracture toughness of solid propellant. A procedure is used to investigate the material under a range of test temperatures between -60 and $60^{\circ}C$, three kind of specimen thickness, 4, 12.5 and 24.5 mm to determine the effect of two parameters on the fracture toughness. A center cracked tension (CCT) specimen is used in these tests, which were conducted using INSTRON 5567 testing machine and environmental chamber to evaluate the fracture toughness. The experimental results show that the fracture toughness tends to decreases with an increase in the temperature, and the effect of thickness indicates that the fracture toughness is highest at 12.5 mm under various temperatures except $-60^{\circ}C$. It is found that the fracture toughness of solid propellant is changed due to glass transition behavior around $-60^{\circ}C$.

  • The basic research on KM(Kick Motor) for space launch vehicle was carried out. KM whick will be used as 2nd stage solid rocket motor. in Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle(I) has been developing. KM is a solid rocket motor using composite propellant based on HTPB and is composed of composite motor case and submerged nozzle. To develop KM rocket motor satisfing a given set of requirement, firstly the full-scale KM was designed, then sub-scale motor reduced about $50\%$ were manufactured and tested.

  • Insensitive Munitions(IM) of solid propulsion system are defined as munitions that fulfil the performance and operational requirements, but will minimize the violence of a reaction when subjected to inadvertant stimuli. It should be clear that the reaction violence of rocket motor subjected to thermal stimuli can be mitigated by reducing confinement prior to propellant reaction. Devices designed to do this by venting the rocket motor case are commonly referred to as mitigation devices. The objective of this paper is to introduce the technical information related to the pyrotechnic mitigation devices for insensitive munition of solid rocket motor.

  • This study is about technical analysis in launching SLBM of North Korea. We expect that North Korea develop ICBM and SLBM by improving the technique called R-27. Also it is expected that they attempt to achievement in covertness and ambush by completing technique of cold launching. Recently, SLBM of North Korea rised 40 ~ 50 m on surface after launching in an underwater when they showed the scene of firing SLBM. We expect that they actively use not general technique but super cavitation technique. Also, they might improve the launching technique by doing SLBM launching test. This type is about that whole rocket is separated two parts and ignited with high velocity and we might think that 1st rocket is used in solid propellant to maneuver in high velocity in an underwater. After then, they might use liquid propellant for the long-range ballistic missile.

  • A Possibility of combustion instability on longitudinal mode has a high level at large scale of L/D. Solid propellant has a metal particle and a grain of control to pressure oscillation. Solid rocket motor in slotted-tube grain controls pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode. If slot length is shot, pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode is amplified by cylinder part after middle phase of total burn time. A study has analyzed pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode at spectrum and acoustic modal analysis at pressure of result on static firing test.

  • Accurate description of starting transient history allows and justifies the use of small margin of safety for the engine parts, resulting in high motor mass ratio in addition to satisfying the control and guidance requirements of the vehicle. Studies have been carried out for the prediction and reduction of ignition peak and pressure-rise rate during the starting transient of solid rocket motors. Numerical studies have been carried out using a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. It has been inferred through the parametric studies that, in the case of solid rocket motors with uniform port, high ignition peak is observed at high spread rate and low pressure-rise rate. In the case of the port with sudden expansion configuration, high ignition peak is observed at relatively high average spread rate and high-pressure rise rate. These studies are expected to aid the designer in reducing the ignition peak by altering the propellant properties or igniter characteristics without sacrificing the motor performance.

  • Auto ignition of hybrid rocket using $N_2O$ catalytic decomposition was studied in the present study. The hybrid rocket consists of catalytic igniter, solid fuel, combustor, and nozzle. The Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst for $N_2O$ decomposition was synthesized by an impregnation method, and $N_2O$ conversion as reaction temperatures was measured. The temperature change of the catalytic ignitor was measured at the operating condition, and the possibility for the auto ignition of hybrid rocket was validated.

  • The development for a high speed underwater vehicle has been demanded for a long time, and it is possible to realize using supercavitation. This paper introduces the main technologies that are necessary to develop a supercavitating rocket system, such as "Supercavitation" and "Hydroreactive technology", and describes the operating concepts and principles for its components specifically. Russia has obtained the key technologies of supercavitation and hydroreactive fuel technology for the first time. Russia has developed a supercavitating rocket torpedo, Shkval, and it was in service since 90's. Iran collaborated with Russia to develop a supercavitating rocket torpedo 'Hoot' and finished a test recently. This paper describes the analysis results related with the cavitator based on the technical reports for Shkval of Russia and Hoot of Iran.
