Waste fuels, which originate from different sources, have unique combustion characteristics. The characteristics should be considered in applying FBC(fluidized bed combustor) technology to those fuels. The effects of fuel properties and operating conditions on FBC reactivity were investigated by means of carbon based parameter called mean carbon conversion time, rate of carbon conversion, fraction of carbon conversion and carbon recovery. And the basic physical and chemical mechanisms taking place in a fluidized bed were summarized. Major parameters in designing and operating FBC were evaluated in terms of the fuel properties and the combustion environment.
Combustion of coke/anthracite in an iron ore sintering bed is characterized quantitatively by introducing newly defined parameters related to propagation and thickness of combustion zone and maximum temperature. The parameters are obtained by sintering pot experiment and I-D, unsteady numerical model which treats solid material as multiple solid phases. Experiments and calculations are performed for various major operating parameters: air inlet velocity, different type of fuels which have different reactivity and diameter of the solid fuel. Effects of the operating parameters on the productivity and quality of the sintering process are investigated and evaluated quantitatively and the results show that optimized air supply rate and diameter of anthracite for replacement of coke can be obtained. This approach can be applied to other kinds of combustors for characterization of the combustion in the solid fuel beds.
The solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) has promoted the development and application for biogas production from biomass which operate a high solid content feedstock, as higher than 15% of total solids. However, the digested byproduct of SS-AD can be used as a fertilizer or as solid fuel, but it has serious problems: high moisture content and poor dewaterability. The organic residue from SS-AD has to be improved to address these problems and to make it a useful alternative energy source. Hydrothermal carbonization was investigated for conversion of the organic residue from the SS-AD of livestock waste to solid fuels. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization were evaluated by varying the reaction temperatures within the range of $180-240^{\circ}C$. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the calorific value through the reduction of the hydrogen and oxygen contents of the solid fuel, in addition to its drying performance. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C atomic ratios decreased through the chemical conversion. Thermogravimatric analysis provided the changed combustion characteristics due to the improvement of the fuel properties. As a result, the hydrothermal carbonization process can be said to be an advantageous technology in terms of improving the properties of organic waste as a solid-recovered fuel product.

Heavy hydrocarbon reforming is a core technology for "Dirty energy smart". Heavy hydrocarbons are components of fossil fuels, biomass, coke oven gas and etc. Heavy hydrocarbon reforming converts the fuels into $H_2$-rich syngas. And then $H_2$-rich syngas is used for the production of electricity, synthetic fuels and petrochemicals. Energy can be used efficiently and obtained from various sources by using $H_2$-rich syngas from heavy hydrocarbon reforming. Especially, the key point of "Dirty energy smart" is using "dirty fuel" which is wasted in an inefficient way. New energy conversion laboratory of KAIST has been researched diesel reforming for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) as a part of "Dirty energy smart". Diesel is heavy hydrocarbon fuels which has higher carbon number than natural gas, kerosene and gasoline. Diesel reforming has difficulties due to the evaporation of fuels and coke formation. Nevertheless, diesel reforming technology is directly applied to "Dirty fuel" because diesel has the similar chemical properties with "Dirty fuel". On the other hand, SOFC has advantages on high efficiency and wasted heat recovery. Nippon oil Co. of Japan recently commercializes 700We class SOFC system using city gas. Considering the market situation, the development of diesel reformer has a great ripple effect. SOFC system can be applied to auxiliary power unit and distributed power generation. In addition, "Dirty energy smart" can be realized by applying diesel reforming technology to "Dirty fuel". As well as material developments, multidirectional approaches are required to reform heavy hydrocarbon fuels and use $H_2$-rich gas in SOFC. Gd doped ceria (CGO, $Ce_{1-x}Gd_xO_{2-y}$) has been researched for not only electrolyte materials but also catalysts supports. In addition, catalysts infiltrated electrode over porous $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}O_3-{\delta}$ and catalyst deposition at three phase boundary are being investigated to improve the performance of SOFC. On the other hand, nozzle for diesel atomization and post-reforming for light-hydrocarbons removal are examples of solving material problems in multidirectional approaches. Likewise, multidirectional approaches are necessary to realize "Dirty energy smart" like reforming "Dirty fuel" for SOFC.

In order to use the liquid rocket fuel, 1,5-diamino-4-methyltetrazolium azide, [DMT]+[N3]- and 1,5-diamino-4-methyltetrazolium cyanide, [DMT]+[CN]- were synthesized and prepared the ionic liquid rocket fuel after dissolving the synthesized solid-type energetic chemicals in hydrazine, respectively. The thermal decomposition temperatures(Td) and densities(d) of the prepared ionic liquid rocket fuels were about 200 ℃ and above 1.0 g/cm3 respectively. The ignition delay times(Idt) of the ionic liqud rock fuels with [DMT]+[N3]- and [DMT]+[CN]- were in a range of 26.6 - 82.5 ms and the 44.0 - 98.5 ms, respectively. These results mean that the synthesized tetrazolium salts could be used as an ionic liquid rocket fuels. The viscosities of the ionic liqud rock fuels with [DMT]+[N3]- and [DMT]+[CN]-, which were dissolved in mixture solution of hydrazine/2-hydroxyethylhydrazine were to be 1.34 - 101 cP, and 1.29 - 80.5 cP, respectively. The synthesized ionic liquid rocket fuels in this study could be used as rocket fuel because the [Idt(100 ms or less), Td(150 ℃ or more), d(1.00 g/cm3 or more), and η(40.0~ 100 cP)] were achieved to satisfy the range of the used liquid rocket fuels.
An experimental study on the behavior of droplets impinging on a solid flat surface was carried out in the present study. Breakup of a liquid droplet impinging on a solid surface has been investigated experimentally for various fuels with different properties. The fuel temperature and incident angle were chosen as major parameters. And fuel temperature and incident angle varied in the range from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ and from $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$, respectively, were investigated. It was found that the variation of fuel temperature influences upon droplet mean diameter which were bounced out from the solid surface. As the increases of incident angle, the break-out mass flow rate increases. This causes the decrease of liquid film flow rate. The larger incident angle gives less liquid film flow rate.

Hybrid rockets have lately attracted attention as a strong candidate of small, low cost, safe and reliable launch vehicles. A significant topic is that the first commercially sponsored space ship, SpaceShipOne vehicle chose a hybrid rocket. The main factors for the choice were safety of operation, system cost, quick turnaround, and thrust termination. In Japan, five universities including Hokkaido University and three private companies organized "Hybrid Rocket Research Group" from 1998 to 2002. Their main purpose was to downsize the cost and scale of rocket experiments. In 2002, UNISEC (University Space Engineering Consortium) and HASTIC (Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center) took over the educational and R&D rocket activities respectively and the research group dissolved. In 2008, JAXA/ISAS and eleven universities formed "Hybrid Rocket Research Working Group" as a subcommittee of the Steering Committee for Space Engineering in ISAS. Their goal is to demonstrate technical feasibility of lowcost and high frequency launches of nano/micro satellites into sun-synchronous orbits. Hybrid rockets use a combination of solid and liquid propellants. Usually the fuel is in a solid phase. A serious problem of hybrid rockets is the low regression rate of the solid fuel. In single port hybrids the low regression rate below 1 mm/s causes large L/D exceeding a hundred and small fuel loading ratio falling below 0.3. Multi-port hybrids are a typical solution to solve this problem. However, this solution is not the mainstream in Japan. Another approach is to use high regression rate fuels. For example, a fuel regression rate of 4 mm/s decreases L/D to around 10 and increases the loading ratio to around 0.75. Liquefying fuels such as paraffins are strong candidates for high regression fuels and subject of active research in Japan too. Nakagawa et al. in Tokai University employed EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) to modify viscosity of paraffin based fuels and investigated the effect of viscosity on regression rates. Wada et al. in Akita University employed LTP (Low melting ThermoPlastic) as another candidate of liquefying fuels and demonstrated high regression rates comparable to paraffin fuels. Hori et al. in JAXA/ISAS employed glycidylazide-poly(ethylene glycol) (GAP-PEG) copolymers as high regression rate fuels and modified the combustion characteristics by changing the PEG mixing ratio. Regression rate improvement by changing internal ballistics is another stream of research. The author proposed a new fuel configuration named "CAMUI" in 1998. CAMUI comes from an abbreviation of "cascaded multistage impinging-jet" meaning the distinctive flow field. A CAMUI type fuel grain consists of several cylindrical fuel blocks with two ports in axial direction. The port alignment shifts 90 degrees with each other to make jets out of ports impinge on the upstream end face of the downstream fuel block, resulting in intense heat transfer to the fuel. Yuasa et al. in Tokyo Metropolitan University employed swirling injection method and improved regression rates more than three times higher. However, regression rate distribution along the axis is not uniform due to the decay of the swirl strength. Aso et al. in Kyushu University employed multi-swirl injection to solve this problem. Combinations of swirling injection and paraffin based fuel have been tried and some results show very high regression rates exceeding ten times of conventional one. High fuel regression rates by new fuel, new internal ballistics, or combination of them require faster fuel-oxidizer mixing to maintain combustion efficiency. Nakagawa et al. succeeded to improve combustion efficiency of a paraffin-based fuel from 77% to 96% by a baffle plate. Another effective approach some researchers are trying is to use an aft-chamber to increase residence time. Better understanding of the new flow fields is necessary to reveal basic mechanisms of regression enhancement. Yuasa et al. visualized the combustion field in a swirling injection type motor. Nakagawa et al. observed boundary layer combustion of wax-based fuels. To understand detailed flow structures in swirling flow type hybrids, Sawada et al. (Tohoku Univ.), Teramoto et al. (Univ. of Tokyo), Shimada et al. (ISAS), and Tsuboi et al. (Kyushu Inst. Tech.) are trying to simulate the flow field numerically. Main challenges are turbulent reaction, stiffness due to low Mach number flow, fuel regression model, and other non-steady phenomena. Oshima et al. in Hokkaido University simulated CAMUI type flow fields and discussed correspondence relation between regression distribution of a burning surface and the vortex structure over the surface.

This paper estimates the nation wide amount of forest biomass arising from management operation for domestic forest based on the simulations that are composed of five scenarios for selecting the target area of thinning. In 2009, the forest biomass arising from thinning is estimated to be 6,642,174 $m^3$. The estimates of forest biomass in 2015 and 2018 are 5,935,140 $m^3$ and 5,682,538 $m^3$, respectively. Since the target forest for thinning policy is estimated to be decreasing, the biomass generated by thinning will decline too. The estimates of forest biomass can be used to induce more effective application of woody biomass rather than one-sided use such as raw materials for solid fuels including pellets and charcoals.

In this study, combustion tests using liquefying fuels with fast regression rate were performed. The chamber pressure oscillation was analyzed and hazards of combustion instabilities were examined. In case of Liquefying fuel with fast regression rate, the amplitude of chamber pressure oscillation was increased compared to the polymeric fuels. However, the critical combustion instability can hardly occur in liquefying fuel. This is because the rapid change of inner chamber diameter limits the amplification of chamber pressure oscillation. The chamber pressure oscillation due to the large increase of fuel production and the vortex shedding in pre-chamber violently occurs during combustion using single-port axial injector.
