  • Solid dispersions and inclusion complex were prepared for the enhancement of solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble ibuprofen(IPF) as a model drug. Polyethylene glycol 4000(PEG4000) and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) were used for the preparation of solid dispersion. $2-Hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin(2-HP{\beta}CD)$ was also used for the preparation of inclusion complex. The solubility of IPF increased as the concentration of PEG4000, PVP and $2-HP{\beta}CD$ increased. Solubilization capacity of $2-HP{\beta}CD$ was increased about 10 times when compared to PEG 4000 and PVP. The dissolution rate of drug from solid dispersions and inclusion complex in the simulated gastric fluid was enhanced when compared to pure IPF and commercial $BR4^{\circledR}$ tablet as a result of improvement of solubility. In case of solid dispersions, dissolution rate of drug was proportional to polymer concentration in the formulation. The marked enhancement of dissolution rate of drug by inclusion complexation with $2-HP{\beta}CD$ was noted. However, dissolution rate of drug from solid dispersions and inclusion complex in the simulated intestinal fluid was not significant because IPF was readily soluble in that condition. From these findings, water-soluble polymers and cyclodextrin were useful to improve solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, easiness and reliability of preparation method, scale-up and cost of raw materials must be considered for the practical application of solid dispersion and inclusion complex in pharmaceutical industry.

  • This study was conducted to investigate how the qualities of the stream water vary during the event in the regrowth and rehabilitation catchments in Yangju, Gyeonggido, from June to September 2005. During the observation periods, we sampled the stream water continuously by an auto-sampler (ISCO, 6712FR). The sampled waters were analyzed for suspended solid concentration, electrical conductivity and pH. The suspended solid concentration during the event increased concurrently with the stream flow. The peak of suspended solid concentration usually precedes the peak flow. The maximum value of suspended solid concentration was 420.89 mg/l in the event 1 at the regrowth catchment. Among the events simultaneously sampled at both catchments, the maximum values of suspended solid concentration were 212.8 mg/l and 58.24 mg/l in the event 3 at the regrowth and rehabilitation catchment respectively. The maximum value of EC in each event showed in the early stage of rising limb. EC decreased during the rising limb, and then showed minimum value at peak flow. EC gradually increased to pre-event value after minimum one. pH varied in similar pattern with EC. The maximum value of suspended solid concentration during each event was 2.8 to 4.3 times higher at the regrowth catchment than at the rehabilitation catchment. And the EC during each event was higher at the regrowth catchment than at the rehabilitation catchment. This results indicate that a disturbed forest soil during clear cutting at regrowth catchment still has been unstable.

  • Measurements of proton adsorption density have been conducted in preparing alumina suspensions with aqueous solutions of HCL, HNO3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 And effects of anion acid concentration proton adsorption density and solid loading on the viscosity of the alumina suspensions have been investigated. Aqueous solutions of HCl. or HNO3 were suitable for the preparation of highly concentrated suspensions as the generation of surface charge on alumina particles was depressed by the specific adsorption of {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }} and {{{{ { PO}`_{4 } ^{3- } }} Optimum conditions for maximizing solid loading were dependent upon proton adsorption density and acid concentration.

  • A mathematical model has been developed for describing the oxygen concentration during the exponential growth of microorganisms, in a static solid substrate bed supported on a tray fermentor. The model equations comprise of one partial differential equation for mass transfer and an ordinary differential equation of growth. After nondimensionlisation, analytical solution tn the model has been obtained by the method of Laplace transforms. An expression for critical thickness of bed is deduced from the model equation. The significance of the model in the design of tray fermentors is discussed. The validity of the discussion is verified by taking an illustration from the literature.

  • Variation of shape and size of solid particles and solute redistribution in Mg-9wt.%Al, AI-4.5wt.% Cu, and AI-7wt.%Si alloys were investigated when they were heated to semi-solid temperatures and held without stirring. In the case of Mg-9wt.% Al and Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys, the polygonal shaped solid particles were agglomerated with non-uniform distribution, and there were no disappearance of the solid/solid boundary until the end of melting. But in the case of an Al-7wt.%Si alloys, two or three spherical shaped particles were coalesced or separated individually, and the coalesced particles had no solid/solid interface on the contrary to the prevous case. The maximum size of solid particles during isothermal heating at high temperature was smaller than that at lower temperature, but the time required to reach the maximum size at high temperature was shorter than that at lower temperature. The concentrations of main solute atom whose distribution coefficient is lower than 1, decreased in the primary solid particles as the liquid fraction increased, and the gradient of solute concentration was steeper in Mg-9wt.%Al alloy and Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy than that of Al-7wt.%Si alloy.

  • Pretreatment of wastepaper using aqueous glycerol was investigated to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis. The effects of four factors (solid/liquid ratio, glycerol concentration, acid concentration, and reaction time) on the dissolution yield, the removal of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and the enzymatic digestibility were examined at $150^{\circ}C$. The 1/8 of solid/liquid was determined to perform the reaction uniformly, and the 93% of glycerol concentration was found to be a minimum concentration to conduct the reaction under atmospheric pressure. Also, it was found that the acid concentration and reaction time were strongly related to the dissolution yield and the removal of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, but moderately to the enzymatic digestibility. At an optimum condition of $150^{\circ}C$, 1 h and 1% acid concentration, 56% and 49% of hemicellulose and lignin, respectively, were removed, while only 4% of cellulose was removed. The enzymatic digestibility at this condition was 86%, meaning that 83% of the glucan present in the initial substrate was converted to glucose. Compared to glycerol with ethylene glycol as a pretreatment solvent, glycerol is much cheaper than ethylene glycol, but ethylene glycol is superior to glycerol in delignification.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the concentration of U(VI) in carbonate solution reasonably, which to improve the application potential of the alkaline reprocessing processes. The dissolution behavior of U3O8 in carbonate peroxide solutions was investigated under different conditions, including pH, carbonate concentration, and solid-liquid ratio. The results showed that the dissolution rate of U3O8 increased with the increase of pH from 8 to 11 in the mixed carbonate solution containing 0.5 mol/L H2O2. The role of carbonate ions in the dissolution of U3O8 was further elucidated by observing the dissolution of UO4⋅4H2O in carbonate solutions. Furthermore, the concentration of U(VI) in 3 mol/L Na2CO3 solution was successfully increased to 350 g/L under ultrasonic-assisted conditions at 60 ℃ and a solid-liquid ratio at 1/2 g/mL. Meanwhile, it is suggested that increasing the concentration of carbonate ions can improve the stability of the dissolved solution containing uranyl peroxycarbonate complex.

  • The experiment was designed to investigate the sustained release dosage form of silymarin (SL) from chitosan (CS) carrier. Solid dispersed system was prepared by mixing the drug with chitosan. This solid dispersed system was cross-linked by glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and butylaldehyde, respectively. The dissolution rates of these preparations were compared with each other in vitro. The silymarin was mired with anionic alginate gel and bead was prepared by dropping this mixture to cationic chitosan solution including calcium chloride. Chitosan encapsulated alginate bead after drying in the oven was investigated for the dissolution rate. The dissolution rate of SL-CS mixture was delayed with increase in the amounts of CS and the concentration of aldehyde. The effect on the delay of dissolution rate was in the increasing order of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, acetaldehyde, butylaldehyde. The dissolution rate of chitosan encapsulated alginate bead was parallel with the concentration of chitosan in diluted hydrochloric acid solution and delayed with increase in the concentration of chitosan in phosphate buffer solution.
