Optimization of Osmotic Dehydration for the Manufacturing of Dried Banana (건조바나나 제조를 위한 삼투건조공정의 최적화)

  • A three variables by three level factorial design and response surface methodology were used to determine optimum conditions for osmotic dehydration of banana. The moisture loss, solid gain, weight loss and reduction of moisture content after osmotic dehydration were increased as temperature, sugar concentration and immersion time increased. The effect of concentration was more significant than those of temperature and time on mass transfer. Color difference and titratable acidity were decreased by higher concentration. Sweetness was increased by increasing sugar concentration, temperature, immersion time during osmotic dehydration. The regression models showed a significant lack of fit (p>0.5) and were highly significant with satisfying values of R2. To optimize osmotic dehydration, based on surface response and contour plots, superimposing the individual contour plots for the response variables. the optimum conditions for this process wire 26$^{\circ}C$, 44 $^{\circ}$brix and 2 hrs for moisture content, sweetness and color difference are less than 72%, 24 obrix and 10 degree.

  • The volatile organic compounds exposure is governed by the source distance and dispersion of the pollutant into air and groundwater. The purpose of this study was to validate suggested models for the prediction of concentration distributions. The study design was organized into different methods to simulate industry site. The distribution models generally showed a fair agreement with measured data. For graphical representation of concentration of volatile hydrocarbon, it has to obtain a continuous representation of the contamination of the site. Therefore, the used interpolative methods examined for this project are the IDW(inverse Distance Weighting) and kriging method. In the results, in summary, all two different methods can be used to quantify exposures at a particular source area, and thus provide, a solid foundation for making risk-based decisions. All the calculations can be performed using Excel's built-in functions, and the capabilities of geospatial analysis allow the results to be displayed visually. However, anyone who uses these methods should understand all of the assumptions and limitation.

  • Novel Sr-Y-Si-Oxynitride yellow phosphors were synthesized and the effect of calcination temperature, reduction temperature and $Eu^{2+}$ concentration on their luminescence properties were studied. Optimal temperature conditions were found to be $1400^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$ for solid-state reaction and reduction, respectively. The synthesized $Ba_9Y_{2+y}Si_6O_{24-3y}N_{3y}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors showed a single intense broadband emission in the range of 571~587 nm for 450 nm excitation light source. The highest luminescence intensity was obtained with Eu concentration of 3 mol% and concentration quenching was observed beyond 5 mol%. FE-SEM and PSA showed that the synthesized phosphors consists of particles with an average size of ${\sim}8.2{\mu}m$.

  • The amounts of salt diffused into radish after immersing in various concentrations of salt solution at different temperatures were measured and the changes of radish texture by the salt diffusion were estimated with the viscoelastic constants of a 3 element solid model determined by a stress relaxation test. The amount of salt diffused through radish was increased with increasing the salt concentration and soaking temperature. While the instantaneous stress, equilibrium elastic solid content and viscoelastic constants of radish were decreased as salt concentration and soaking temperature increased, the stress relaxed fast. Viscoelastic constants as well as the diffusivity were influenced by salt concentration more than by soaking temperature. The rheological equations for the predictable stress changes of radish after immersed in the salt solution at various conditions (temperature, salt concentration and impure salt) were suggested as a function of time.

A Study on Rheological Changes of Redbean Jam druing Storage (단팥의 저장 중 물성변화에 관한 연구)

  • The changes of the rheological properties of redbean jam were investigated during storage. The relationship between moisture content (40, 45 and 50%) and agar concentration (1, 0.1 and 0.2%) were studied for 5 days of storage. Water holding capacity was measured by placing redbean jam on Toyo Filter paper(No. 5A) and moisture movement was measured by placing redbean jam in bread. Sensory characteristics were examined in terms of color, flavour, preference, bitterness and taste. The results were as follows. Water holding capacity of redbean jam was increased as the solid content of sugar and agar concentration increased. Moisture movement was decreased as the solid content of sugar and agar concentration increased. Color, flavour, preference and taste were increased for the first day but decreased from the second day. There was significant difference(P<0.01). Bitterness did not show significant difference. 45% of moisture content, 0.1% of agar concentration and the first day showed the highest preference.

  • $Tb^{3+}$ or $Eu^{3+}$ or $Ce^{3+}$-doped $CaYAlO_4$ phosphor were synthesized by solid-state method. $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ is shown that the $Tb^{3+}$-doping concentration has a significant effect on the $^5D_4/^5D_3{\rightarrow}7F_J$ (J=6,...,0) emission intensity of $Tb^{3+}$. The $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphors show tunable photoluminescence from blue to yellow with the change of doping concentration of $Tb^{3+}$ ions. The $CaYAlO_4:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors exhibit a red-orange emission of $Eu^{3+}$ corresponding to $^5D_0$, $_{1,2}{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J=4,...,0) transitions. The $CaYAlO_4:Ce^{3+}$ phosphors show a blue emission due to $Ce^{3+}$ ions transitions from the 5d excited state to the $^2F_{5/2}$ and $^2F_{7/2}$ ground states. The decay time of $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphors decrease from 1.33 ms to 0.97 ms as $Tb^{3+}$ concentration increases from 0.1 mol% to 7 mol%. The decay time of $CaYAlO_4:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors increase from 0.94 ms to 1.17 ms as $Eu^{3+}$ concentration increases from 1 mol% to 9 mol%.

  • Constitutional supercooling due to concentration gradient at solid-liquid interface in the melt can be avioded by increasing rotational speed for growing $LiNbO_3$ single crystals from the stoichiometric melt. Growth conditions for high quality crystals were determined by rotational speed by which other growth parameters were adjusted.

  • Sodium sulfate is commonly added in reactive dyebath in order to increase substantivity of the reactive dye to cellulose fiber by reducing repulsion between anionic dye and fiber. While sodium sulfate is mostly used in solid form, it is inconvenient to dissolve a large amount of powder sodium sulfate. Furthermore, if there is undissolved salt in dyebath it might cause unlevel dyeing. In this study, sodium sulfate in liquid or solid form was used in dyeing of cellulose fabric with reactive dyes of three primary color and the effect of type or amount of sodium sulfate on dyeing and fastness properties was investigated. When the amount of sodium sulfate rose to 30-50 g/l, K/S value of the dyed fabric markedly increased; further rise in sodium sulfate concentration resulted in slow increase in K/S value. For light color, optimum amount was about 30 g/l in solid form and 50-100 g/l in liquid form while, for medium to deep color, it was 50 g/l and 100-150 g/l in solid and liquid form, respectively. When using each optimum amount of salt in solid or liquid form for medium color, shape of dyeing curve as well as exhaustion was similar to each other. On the whole, similar color fastness results were obtained regardless of type or amount of sodium sulfate.

Characteristic of Hydrogen Generation from Solid-State NaBH4 and Fuel Cell Operation for Fuel Cell Aircraft (연료전지 항공기를 위한 고체상태 NaBH4의 수소발생 및 연료전지 구동 특성)

  • This paper describes the characteristics of hydrogen generation from solid-state $NaBH_4$ and fuel cell operation for fuel cell aircraft. The solid-state $NaBH_4$ was used for a high hydrogen storage density, and was reacted with hydrochloric acid to generate hydrogen. The hydrogen generation rate for the solid-state $NaBH_4$ reaction was measured at various conditions. As a result, the hydrogen generation rate was increased with the feed rate and concentration of hydrochloric acid, while not be affected by the reaction temperature. A fuel cell was connected with the solid-state $NaBH_4$ hydrogen generator. The stable power output was obtained at the gradual and sudden increases of electric loads.

Seasonal Variation of Microalgae in the Surface Water of Marian Cove, King George Island, the Antarctic 1998/1999 (1998/1999 남극 킹조지섬 마리안소만 표층수에 서식하는 미세조류의 계절적 변동)

  • We investigated seasonal variation of microalgal assemblages, sea water temperature, salinity and suspended solid and the parameters measured daily from January 1998 to October 1999 at a nearshore shallow-water in Marian Cove, Maxwell Bay, King George Island, the Antarctic. Annual mean surface water temperature was -0.3$0^{\circ}C$ and the highest water temperature was 4.53$^{\circ}C$ (22 January 1999) and the lowest water temperature was -2.07$^{\circ}C$ (23 August 1998). Annual mean salinity was 33.38 psu, ranging from 42.80 psu (6 January 1999) to 19.50 psu (6 June 1999). Annual mean suspended solid (SS) during two years was 34.14 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, ranging from 60.62 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$(7 March 1998) to 12.90 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ (26 December 1998). Chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl $\alpha$) concentrations were measured in order to know seasonal variations of microalgae in the surface seawater. Annual mean of total Chl a concentration was 0.55$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, the highest Chl $\alpha$ concentration (12.16$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$) appeared in 4 October 1998, the lowest Chl $\alpha$ concentration appeared 0.19$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, Monthly mean total Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in October 1998 (1.32$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$) and low in July on 1998 (0.28$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). Annual mean nano-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was 0.40$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, monthly mean nano -sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in November 1998 (0.90$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$), and low in July 1999 (0.22$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). Annual mean micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was 0.15$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$ monthly mean micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in October 1998 (0.81$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$), and low July 1998, January, February and September 1999 (0.05$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). More than 65% of total Chl $\alpha$ was concentrated during spring and summer time between October and March. Microalgal variation appeared to be due to physical factors of seawater in the Antarctic nearshore from 1998 to 1999. The reason why micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ did not increase during austral summer was the bay had been frozen by decrease of water temperature. We think that total microalgal abundance was decreased because the summer microalgal abundance was determined by variation of water temperature during winter season.
