Assessment of Nutritional Adequacy of Gimbap Sold in Convenience Stores Focused on Protein and Mineral Content (편의점 판매 김밥의 단백질과 무기질 함량을 중심으로 한 영양 적정성 평가)

  • This study examined the nutritional information using the nutrition labels of gimbap sold at convenience stores and evaluated nutritional adequacy compared to dietary reference intakes for Korean adolescents. Thirty gimbaps (triangular gimbaps and regular gimbaps according to the main ingredients of vegetables, fish, and meat) were purchased at five convenience stores of different brands with many stores in Korea. The food and nutrition labels of the gimbaps were investigated, and nine minerals were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average price of gimbap was 1,906.7 won, and average energy was 292.0 kcal, and the protein content was 15.5% of the recommended intake for Korean male adolescents aged 15~18 years. The mineral content ranged from 6.9% for zinc to 39.0% for selenium. Except for sodium and selenium, the energy, protein, and mineral content did not meet 1/3 of dietary reference intakes for adolescents. For the index of nutritional quality (INQ), calcium and zinc were the lowest in the triangular and regular gimbap, respectively. The INQ of potassium was significantly higher in triangular gimbap with vegetables. The content and INQ of selenium were in regular gimbap with fish, and the zinc INQ was in regular gimbap with meat. Overall, gimbap sold in convenience stores has a high sodium content, and the contents of energy, protein, and minerals, except selenium, are insufficient for a single meal.

  • This study was concentrated that the contents of heavy metals were estimated from 782 samples of sold fisheries in Seoul(33 species in fishes, 15 in bivalves, 12 in crustaceans and 10 in others) by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. The contents of As, Cd and Pb [minimum~maximum (mean)] were N.D.~0.162 mg/kg(0.021),0.001~0.120 mg/kg(0.014) and 0.015~0.499 mg/kg(0.111) in fishes, 0.003~0.311 mg/kg(0.052), N.D.~1.905 mg/kg(0.182) and 0.013~0.462 mg/kg(0.138) in bivalves, N.D.~0.328 mg/kg(0.042), 0.002~1.113mg/kg(0.079) and 0.006~-.510 mg/kg(0.109) in crustaceans, N.D. ~0.181 mg/kg(0.024), 0.001~0.214 mg/kg(0.033) and 0.010~0.877 mg/kg(0.118) in others respectively, bivalves were the highest than others. The average weekly intakes of three metals from sold fisheries took about 1.4~26.4% of PTWI (provisional tolerable weekly intakes) that FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee had set to evaluate their safety.

  • Looking at the current status of beverages sold from vending machines in subway stations in Seoul, it was found that carbonated beverages accounted for the highest percentage of beverages on sale in vending machines, representing 36 % of all beverages sold. Survey respondents purchased carbonated drinks or sports drinks containing high levels of sugar to quench their thirst. Investigation of the sugar content of beverages frequently sold in vending machines showed that a serving of carbonated beverage contained an average of 30.4 g of sugar, or as much as 50.1 g of sugar (equivalent 10 to 17 cubes; 1 cube = 3 g of sugar). This amount corresponded, on average, with 60 % of the WHO recommended daily sugar intake (50 g). Surprisingly, with certain carbonated beverages, drinking a single can is equivalent to consuming the total recommended daily sugar intake of 50 g.

Comparison of the Sanitary Conditions of Raw Milk Cheese and Pasteurized Milk Cheese Sold in the Market: A Preliminary Study (시중에 판매되고 있는 비살균 치즈와 살균 치즈의 위생상태 비교: 예비연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the microbiological safety of various cheeses made from raw milk currently imported and sold in Korea. A total of 12 cheeses were considered for the study - 4 kinds of imported cheese made from raw milk, 4 kinds of imported cheese made from pasteurized milk, and 4 kinds of domestic cheese made from pasteurized milk, and aerobic count, presence of E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes were investigated. Results from this study showed that in the 12 different kinds of cheese tested, E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes were negative. Therefore, the sanitary conditions of imported cheese made from raw milk, imported cheese made from pasteurized milk, and domestic cheese made from pasteurized milk are considered safe. The mean aerobic count in the 12 types of tested cheese was below 4.0 log CFU/g. In conclusion, various cheeses produced from raw milk or pasteurized milk currently sold in Korea have been found to be hygienic and safe. In the future, raw milk cheeses produced and sold in Korea will require long-term research not only to ensure safety but also to produce new, high-quality products.

Studies on the Removal of Ammonia in Alcohol (주정중의 Ammonia 제거에 관한 지견)

  • In view of the fact that the technical grade alcohol sold in Korea contains considerable amount of ammonia (average 10 ppm), the author has investigated a new method of removal of ammonia by the addition of dl-tartaric acid. It was found that the ammonia contained in sample alcohol was removed completely, by the addition of dl-tartaric acid, to form ammonium bitartrate.

A Study on the Development of Adaptive Clothing for the Dementia Patients (치매환자용 기능성 의류개발)

  • This study developed adaptive clothing to increase psychological comfort and protection for dementia patients. Our research method and data collection were as follows. The author selected and interviewed 10 caregivers and nurses to understand dementia patient behavior. The author collected eight pieces of clothing designed for dementia patients that are sold in Korean and overseas markets. We then analyzed garment details, open systems, close systems, and expected functions. Adaptive clothing for dementia patients were developed based upon our research. The results are as follows. First, dementia patients' behavior differed by dementia patient symptoms. Second, all items sold in Korean and overseas markets were jump suits designed to prevent behavior characteristic of dementia patients. Third, the author designed and manufactured five pieces of adaptive clothing for dementia patients that included two for mild dementia patients and three for moderate dementia patients. A panel of 50 caregivers gave high marks to developed clothing in regards to functionality, hygiene, patient human rights and aesthetics. The adaptive clothing of dementia patients from this research will increase the psychological and emotional satisfaction of dementia patients.

Marketing Situation and Sales promotion Strategies of Boxthron in Chongyang Area (청양 구기자의 유통실태와 판매촉진전략)

  • This paper is aimed to study on sales promotion strategies for the increment of farm income by cultivating Boxthron in Chongyang Area. Marketing Survey was done in Chongyang Boxthron market, Kyoung-dong herb market in Seoul. The results are as follows ; Reviewing the Boxthron market prices, the price of direct transaction was the highest one and that of Agricultural Cooperatives was next one, Chongyang market price was lowest one. Therefore, the efforts including exclusive labeling, high class packing strategies of Boxthron with lower pollution would be necessary. The seasonal variation Boxthron prices were lowest in Aug.-Sept., harvesting season, and highest in april-june prices, off-crop season. Farmers have sold 45% of all products in Aug.-Oct. at lowest price and the remaining 15% of that sold in april-june at the highest prices. On account of the above reasons, loan for Boxthron production, government purchasing and storage program of it especially in harvesting season from Aug. to Oct. should be adopted to increase Boxthron producer income. Finally, the strategies for sales promotion, enforcement of government supporting activities including export strategies and the development of new processed products of Boxthron should be propelled considering the products cycle.

Constituent Analysis of Organic Solvents in Adhesives Sold on Domestic Market (국내시판 본드에 함유된 유기용매의 성분분석)

  • Ingredients and concentrations of organic solvents in 7 kinds of adhesive sold on the domestic market were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed. Vapor concentrations were also analysed to estimate inhalation concentratins when adhesives were abused to get high. Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl cyclopenatane, cyclohexane and toluene were identified to be used in domstic adhesives as solvents. When organic solvents of adhesives were vaporized in the vial at the room temprature for 30 mins, concentrations of organic solvents in air were in the range of 5,000~140,000ppm. Among these solvents, toluene, known to have strong hallucination effect, showed 5,000~35,000 ppm. The putative concentration of toluene in case of glue sniffing was estimated to be about 5,000ppm in consideration of glue sniffing circumstances. Toluene was found in all adhesives in this study, even adhesives which toluene was not described in label.

  • The urban style compact apartment which appeared at the end of 1990's was developed by the decrement of household members and in compliance with a new life style. Now it has its own market as a new trend. The purpose of this study is to better understand the characteristics of urban style compact apartments based on an analysis of apartments actually sold on 2008, in order to reflect on the future directions and developments. To support a comprehensive analysis, this study considered three types of compact apartments developed by : a. major developers which own multiple well-recognized brand names, b. mid-size developers under general brand names, c. new or small-size developers specializing in compact apartments. The results from 21 urban style compact apartments could be summarized as follow; 1. Most buyers are Singles or DINKs. The single women occupy a large percentage. 2. Condition of good location is under 5 minutes walk to station and accessibility to 2 and more station. 3. Exterior of building should be harmonious to surrounding and simple, the atmosphere of entrance hall should be warm and relaxed. 4. The spatial character of unit plans are developed by the ways of connecting spaces; 1) Connecting spaces by mobile partition: flexible spaces with expansion 2) Connecting spaces by hall: well arranged spaces with excursion and extends 5. The equipments of kitchen and security are fully carefully planned.

Effects of Adoption of the Buy-price, Setting the Starting Bid Price, and Adoption of 'the Effective Fixed Price' on the Final Bid Prices in Internet Auctions (인터넷 경매에서 즉시구매옵션 설정여부, 시작가, 고정가형 판매방식여부가 낙찰가에 미치는 영향)

  • We analyze the effects of the sellers' strateiges on the final bid prices in internet auctions. We focus on the following three strategies of the seller adoption of the buy-price, setting the starting bid price, and adoption of 'the effective fixed price' which means that the starting bid price is set near the buy-price. In addition, the number of units sold single-unit or multi-unit, and item characteristics, such as whether the food is a search product (functional product) or an experience product (non-functional product), are also considered. We use real data on bids for 4 items from an online auction site. We find that in an auction for experience products when sold as single units, adopting the buy-price strategy raises the final bid price. We also find that in multi-unit auctions, starting the auction at 'the effective fixed price' raises the final bid price.
