Solar receiver in the solar power tower system has a similarity to a boiler of the thermal power plant in many aspects. However Boiler is operated long time without stopping while solar receiver repeats start and stop every day. The objective of this study is to investigate start-up characteristics of solar receiver. The experimental device was constructed in a bench scale. Basic experimental condition of water/steam was set by 25 bar and $223^{\circ}C$. Initially, the heat was added into risers only, then another experiment with input into drum additionally was done. When the heat flux was valid only risers, it took about 300 minutes until the water temperature in drum reached $223^{\circ}C$. Water temperature of drum was increased by $44^{\circ}C$/hr with 91.14 g/s of water circulation. With additional heat input into drum, 200 minutes was required to reach $223^{\circ}C$. In this case temperature was increased $66^{\circ}C$/hr with 96.5 g/s of water circulation.
Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of a 200 kW thermal capacity uses an open air receiver. An air receiver is generally based on the volumetric receiver concept with porous ceramic absorbers. Because absorber material is important in the volumetric receiver, ceramic materials with excellent thermal conductivity, high solar absorptivity and good thermal stability have been researched. KIER also developed SiC honeycomb absorber modules and evaluated performance of the modules at the KIER solar furnace. For performance evaluation, we made an open volumetric receiver containing the modules and measured the outlet temperature and the efficiency. It is demonstrated that performance of the KIER absorber is comparable to that of a reference absorber developed by DLR.

High water vapour content in air can cause a number of problems as for human or surrounding materials. For human a high water vapour can create physiological stress, discomfort, and also can encourage ill health. While, the cause for the environment is can accelerate the corrosion of metals, accelerate the growth of spores and mould, can reduce the electrical resistance of insulators and etc. Desiccant systems have been proposed as energy saving alternatives to vapor compression air conditioning for handling especially the latent load and also sensible load. Use of liquid desiccants offers several design and performance advantages over solid desiccants, especially when solar energy is used for regeneration. The liquid desiccants contact the gas inside the packed tower of liquid desiccant solar cooling system and the heat transfer and mass transfer will occur. This thesis is trying to study the characteristics inside the packed tower of dehumidifier systems. This characteristics consist of mass transfer rate, heat transfers rate, human comfort and energy that consume by the system. Those characteristics were affected by air flow rates, air temperature and humidity, and desiccant temperature and all that variation will influence the performance of the systems. The results of this thesis later on can be used to determine the best performance of the systems.
KIER have been developing high-temperature solar technology, especially the solar thermal power generation system, since the early of 1990s. In 1994, the first research on high temperature solar technology started with PTC technology. At the moment the most advanced 10kW dish system is under demonstration for 10kW solar thermal power generation. Test results showed about 19.2% solar to electricity average efficiency. Another research activities of KIER is hybrid power generation. For hybridization, solar and LFG(landfill gas) are used. Another hybrid solar system is with solar chemical reaction. In this system, power unit is gas turbine, and the heat content of fuel(like natual gas) is upgraded by solar energy through chemical reaction. The latest project on solar thermal power generation is for 1 MW power tower system. This is the Korea-China Joint project.
In summer electrical energy is consumed in very high rate. It is used to operate conventional air conditioning system. Hot and humid air can germinate mould spores, encourage ill health, and create physiological stress (discomfort). Dehumidifier solar cooling effect is the one alternative solution saving electrical energy. We use surplus heat energy in the summer, to get cooling effect and then to get human reach to comfort condition. These devices have two system, dehumidifier and regeneration system. This paper will be focus in dehumidifier system. Dehumidifier system use for absorbing moisture in the air and decreasing air temperature. When the liquid desiccant as strong solution contact with the vapor air in the packed tower, it works. The heat and mass transfer performances of flow pattern in the packed tower of dehumidifier are analyzed and compared in detail. In this experiment was introduced, the flow patterns are parallel flow and counter flow. The performance of these flow patterns will calculate from air side. Which is the best flow pattern that gave huge mass transfer rate? The proposed dehumidifier flow pattern will be helpful in the design and optimization of the dehumidifier solar cooling system.
Solar towers, which often has a large aspect ratio and low fundamental natural frequency, were extremely prone to large amplitude of wind-induced vibrations, especially Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV). A tiny Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) with conveniently adjustable eddy current damping was specially designed and manufactured for elastic wind tunnel tests of a solar tower. A series of numerical simulations by using the COMSOL software were conducted to determine three key parameters, including the thickness of the back iron plate and the conductive plate (Tb and Tc), the distance between the magnet and the conductive plate (Td). Based on the results of numerical simulations, a tiny TMD was manufactured and its structural parameters were experimentally identified. The optimized values of the tiny TMD can be conveniently realized. The tiny TMD was installed at the top of the elastic test model of a 243-meter-high solar tower, and a series of wind tunnel tests were carried out to examine the effectiveness of the TMD in suppressing wind-induced responses of the test model. The results showed that the wind-induced responses could be obviously reduced by the TMD, especially in the cross-wind direction. The cross-wind RMS and peak responses at the critical wind velocity can be reduced by about 86% and 75%, respectively. However, the maximum reduction of the responses at the design wind velocity is about 45%, obviously less than that at the critical wind velocity.

This paper describes water circulation characteristics of a water/steam receiver at various heat fluxes. The water/steam receiver for a solar tower power system is a natural circulation type. Experimental conditions of water and steam were set at a pressure of 5 bar and temperature of $151.8^{\circ}C$. The experimental device for the water/steam receiver consisted of a steam drum, upper/lower header, riser tubes, and downcomer tube. The experiments were conducted by varying heat fluxes in terms of mass flow rate in each riser tube. However, the total mass flow rate on the riser tubes was fixed at 217.4 g/s. For the uniform heat flux, while the water temperature of the steam drum and upper header were kept at steady state, the temperature of the lower header was fluctuated. For the non-uniform heat flux, while the temperature of the steam drum was kept steady state, the temperature difference increased in the right and left side of the upper header, and the temperature of the lower header was fluctuated.
This study is focused on the effect of thermal load according to the various plan types in tower-type apartment in Korea. So, we chose the '』' type model in order to analyze the shading effect of the plan type. The main results are as follows. In chosen model, cooling energy demands are more sensitive than heating ones when is compared with the two methods. And there are about 10% deviations between new and conventional method. Because new method considers more detailed than conventional one about the building geometries. We also found that this building type affects to the about 3 floors from the top and it doesn't affect to the thermal load in lower floors. From these facts, we suggest new modeling method to the similar researches that will be analyzed the thermal load on the tower type apartment in Korea. Also there is no difference of the thermal load in each azimuth between simple and detailed modeling method. Consequently, we judge that this new method considered the shading effect will be used a lot to the similar analysis in tower type apartment in Korea.
Heliostat field is the most important subsystem in the tower type solar thermal power plant since its optical performance affects the total system efficiency most significantly while the construction cost of it is the major part of total construction cost in such a power plant. Thus a well designed heliostat field to maximize the optical efficiency as well as to minimize the land usage is very important. This work presents methodology, procedures and result of heliostat filed design for 200kW solar thermal power plant built recently in Daegu, Korea. A $2{\times}2(m)$ rectangular shaped receiver located at 43(m) high and tilted $28^{\circ}$ toward heliostat field, 450 of heliostats of which the reflective surface is formed by 4 of $1{\times}1(m)$ flat plate mirror facet, and the land area having about $140{\times}120(m)$ size are used to form the heliostat field. A procedure to deploy 450 heliostats in radial staggered nonblocking formation is developed. Also the procedures to compute the cosine effect, intercept ratio, blocking and shading ratio in the field are developed. Finally the heliostat filed is designed by finding the optimal radial distance and azimuthal spacing in radial staggered nonblocking formation such that the designed heliostat field optical efficiency could be maximized. The designed heliostat field has 77% of annual average optical efficiency, which is obtained by annually averaging the optical efficiencies computed between the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ after sunrise and the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ before sunset in each day.
Heliostat field control algorithm is the logics to operate the heliostat field of tower type solar thermal power plant and it could include various methodologies of how to control the heliostat field so as to optimize the energy collection efficiency as well as to reduce the system operating cost. This work, as the first part of the consecutive works, presents heliostat aiming mint allocation scheme which will be used in the heliostat field control algorithm for 200kW solar thermal power plant built in Daegu, Korea. We first discuss the structure of heliostat field control system required for the implementation of aiming scheme developed in this work. Then the methodologies to allocate the heliostat aiming points on the receiver are discussed. The simulated results show that the heliostat aiming point allocation scheme proposed in this work reduces the magnitude of peak heat flux on the receiver more than 40% from the case of which all the heliostats in the field aim at the center of receiver simultaneously. Also it shows that, when the proposed scheme is used, the degradation of heliostat field optical efficiency is relatively small from the maximal optical efficiency the heliostat field could have.
