Cap Model을 이용한 기초식반의 수동해석(I) -범용프로그램의 검증과 수치계산례-

  • This paper aims at investigating the characteristics of soil deformation by finite element method (FEM) coupling the cap model with the multi.purpose program developed by authors for the analysis of foundation displacement. The cap model as the constitutive equation has proved to be very useful to a partially saturated roils as well as rocks with high accuracy. As described in the Previous Paper (Park et al 1987) , there exist some difficulties in the determination of soil parameters in order to use the cap model at Present. However the authors have been studying to seek the method for the determination of the soil parameters from the laboratory results of conventional cylindrical triaxial test. Though the computer program advocated by foreign scholars has been kept secret, authors accomplished in performing the FEM analysis by the algorithm and program developed by authors for the cap model. Good results are obtained compared with those published already by Desai(1981) The main conclusions analyzed are as follows: 1. The cap model can be coupled with the multi.purpose computer program of authors bases on the Biot's consolidation theory without loss of generality. 2. Big difference appears in the settlement of center of the embankment between the cap modes and the modified Cam clay model in undrained conditions. The more study on which is more accurate should be performed in this respect.

Non-linear Finite Strain Consolidation of Ultra-soft Soil Formation Considering Radial Self-weight Consolidation (방사방향 자중압밀을 고려한 초연약 지반의 비선형 유한변형 압밀거동 분석)

  • Vertical drains are commonly used to accelerate the consolidation process of soft soils, such as dredged materials. The installation of vertical drain provides a radial drainage path to water in the deposit soil in addition to the vertical direction. An estimation of time rate of settlement is considerably complicated when vertical drains are installed to enhance consolidation process of dredged material because the vertical drains are commonly installed before self-weight consolidation is ceased. In this paper, the vertical drain theory developed by Barron(1948) is applied to analyze the non-linear consolidation behavior considering radial drainage. The overall average degree of self-weight consolidation of the dredged soil under the condition that the water is drained in both radial and vertical directions is estimated using the Carillo(1942) formula. In addition, the Morris(2002) theory and the one-dimensional non-linear finite strain numerical model, PSDDF, are applied to analyze the self-weight consolidation in case of only the vertical drainage is considered. The new analysis approach proposed herein can simulate properly the time rate of the self-weight consolidation of dredged materials that is facilitated with vertical drains.

  • Volume change of the dredged soils is composed of the volume loss of soil particle flowing over an outflow weir with water and settlement due to both the self-weight consolidation in reclaimed layer and the desiccation at the surface of reclaimed layer. In order to estimate the amount of soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water, the evaluation procedure of loss ratio of the dredged soils is proposed in the present study based on the Marsal's modified breakage theory and the results of hydrometer analyses. To verify a validity of the proposed procedure, evaluated loss ratio is compared with results from the other existing methods. The model test results and those of field test were compared and analyzed. Also, the variation of soil loss ratio was examined through the model test in the lab.

  • Several theoretical soil nonlinear models to predict damping ratio, which is one of the typical dynamic properties of soils, it is impractical to predict damping ratio. The resonant column and torsional shear test(RC-TS) is used to represent the dynamic behavior of soils from intermediate to medium shear strains. A limitation of RC-TS is measure precise shear strain in large strains and the modified equivalent radius($R_{eq}$) was obtained using both modified hyperbolic model and Ramberg-Osgood model. Bonneville clays were tested using RC-TS test to obtain rotation and torque. The measured rotation and torque were then compared with calculated rotation and torque using curve-fitting method. Then, the nonlinear soil model parameters were obtained and the equivalent radius was calculated using the model parameters.

The Aging Effect of Dredging Clayey Soil on the Consolidation Characteristics (준설점성토의 압밀특성에 미치는 시간효과)

  • According to the field measurement of dredging-reclaimed land, the actual self-weight consolidation settlement has been frequently reported to be less than the predicted values based on the laboratory tests results. The author estimates that one of the reasons is the reduction of the compressibility due to the sedimentation of the dredging material, Furthemore, the aging effect is ignored in the consolidation characteristics of the very low stress range as a pump dredging-reclaimed land. In this paper, a series of seepage consotidation tests has been carried out by applying the seepage force to the specimen prepared by sedimentation in consolidmeter in order to clarflfy the aging-effect on the compressibility of dredging clayey soil, Also, with a view to overcome unstable consolidation solution occurring in the case where the initial water content is higher as pumpdredging reclaimed land, the finite difference analysis technique using predictorforrector method is suggested that it gets good agreement with ezperimental results. Finally, the compressibility of the dredging clayey soil is depended on self-weight consolidation time.

  • The number of occurrence of differential settlement and track irregularity at track transition zone recently comes to increase, which leads to frequent maintenance activities that have an impact on train operation. Such track transition zone damages are attributed to the change of mechanical properties of fill materials due to environmental factors such as rainfall and freeze, and thaw. Consequently, this study attempts to establish the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) of fill materials, and conduct seepage analysis to assess the distribution of degree of saturation (DOS) for track transition zone in case of rainfall. The SWCC of fill materials was successfully obtained using filter paper test method. The results of seepage analysis revealed that rainfall intensity, the slope of backfill, backfill condition (fill or cut), and SWCC are significantly influential in controlling the distribution of DOS.

Design Improvement of the Road Expansion on a Deep Thick Soft Ground (대심도 연약지반 도로확장 공사에서의 설계 개선)

  • The expansion of a road on soft ground could induce an additional settlement to the existing road because of the consolidation characteristics of the soft soil layer subjected to additional load by an adjacent banking. In such case, the existing road could be faced with various problems during the stages of the construction and maintenance, such as deterioration of not only the surface smoothness yielding the decrease in automobile performance safety but also the structural stability of the embankment. These kinds of problems are expected to occur more freguently especially for the deep ground level with a fairly thick soft soil layer. Therefore, they should be examined and studied adequately during the design stage. As a reference case study, this paper deals with the project named Namhae Expressway of 2nd Branch with the soft soil layer with the thickness upto about 50m. After a lengthy review of the original design, an improved design is proposed.

Laboratory Model Tests on the Load Transfer in Geosynthetic-Reinforced and Pile-Supported Embankment System (토목섬유보강 성토지지말뚝시스템에서의 하중전이 효과에 관한 모형실험)

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the load transfer by soil arching in geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported(GRPS) embankment systems. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted in the model container and geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by rubber form. The loads acting on pile caps and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. At the given interval ratio of pile caps, the efficiency in GRPS embankment systems increased with increasing the height of embankment fills, then gradually converged at constant value. Also, at the given height of embankment fills, the efficiency decreased with increasing the pile spacing. The embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching increased when the geosynthetics installed with piles. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics have a good effect to restraint the movement of surrounding soft grounds. The load transfer in GRPS embankment systems was affected by the interval ratio, height of fills, properties of grounds and tensile stiffness and so on.

  • Waste tires can be used not only for reinforcement material due to its high capacity against tensile force but also effective for massive treatment. In order to use waste tire as reinforcing material Tread mat using tire treads only was made. Plate load tests on the embankment of decomposed granite soil reinforced with Tread mat and geogrids were conducted for comparison with the test results, respectively. And numerical analyses were performed to see the stress and stain around the reinforced material. Tread mat showed bearing capacity increase and the amount was bigger than that of commercial geogrids. Finite element analysis showed decrease of stress beneath the reinforced material and stress distribution. Finally Tread mat was proposed to use for soil reinforcement as a means of massive treatment of discarded tire.

Behavior of piled rafts overlying a tunnel in sandy soil

  • The present research presents experimental and finite element studies to investigate the behavior of piled raft-tunnel system in a sandy soil. In the experimental work, a small scale model was tested in a sand box with load applied vertically to the raft through a hydraulic jack. Five configurations of piles were tested in the laboratory. The effects of pile length (L), number of piles in the group and the clearance distance between pile tip and top of tunnel surface (H) on the load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel system are investigated. The load sharing percent between piles and rafts are included in the load-settlement presentation. The experimental work on piled raft-tunnel system yielded that all piles in the group carry the same fraction of load. The load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model was increased with increasing (L) for variable (H) distances and decreased with increasing (H) for constant pile lengths. The total load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model decreases with decreasing number of piles in the group. The total load carrying capacity of the piles relative to the total applied load (piles share) increases with increasing (L) and the number of piles in the group. The increase in (L/H) ratio for variable (H) distance and number of piles leads to an increase in piles share. ANSYS finite element program is used to model and analyze the piled raft-tunnel system. A three dimensional analysis with elastoplastic soil model is carried out. The obtained results revealed that the finite element method and the experimental modeling are rationally agreed.
