Farming using natural salts for supply of nutrients to crops is increasing recently. It is necessary to evaluate the salt accumulation in soil and the effects on crop growth by treatment of natural salt. This study was conducted at the organic cultivation fields which garlics were planted. The treatments were no natural salts (control) and plots applied 100~600 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ with natural salts. Soil samples were taken from the 0 to 25 cm depth at 12 and 107 day (harvest time) after natural salts application. The results showed that electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable Na (Exch.$-Na^+$) and Cl- were increased by application of natural salts. But, pH and exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) had not significantly differences among treatments. In 300 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ plots of natural salt, the level of EC, Exch.$-Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ in top soil (0-5 cm) was were increased more 0.3, 3.7, and 12.7 times than control plot, respectively. EC, Exch.$-Na^+$, and $Cl^-$ were highest in the top 5 cm of soil and decreased with depth at 12 days after natural salts application, but were decreased in the plower layer (0-15cm) at the harvest time because they were leached with natural rain. An increasing the application level of natural salt resulted in increasing of sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, and percentage of soil dispersion. The concentration of nutrient uptake such as total nitrogen (T-N), chloride (Cl) in garlic had significant difference between control and plots applied with natural salts The content of T-N of garlic in plots with natural salt application was lower than control plot, but Cl is higher than control plot.
Species composition, life form, biomass and soil properties of the halophyte communities were investigated from July to September, 1982. At the reclaimed land of Sanho-ri, sand dune of Jido, salt marsh of Suncheon Bay, and Somjin River estuary of Baealdo, species numbers were 26, 14, 13 and 7, dominant species were Salicornia herbaceae, Carex pumila and Suaeda japonica, respectively. Species composition of the 4 investigated areas was 13 families, 25 genera and 39 species, and of them, 10 families, 21 genera and 24 species were attributed to halophytes. Out of 22 life forms, the representative for Jido was $ G-D_4-R_1-3-e.t$and those for the other sites were Th-G4-R5-e. Above ground biomass of all species for Sanho-ri, Jido, Suncheon Bay and Baealdo were 441.3, 202.0, 150.7 and 353.3 g.dw/m2 and the ratios of above ground biomass halophytes to all species were 93.5, 92.7, 90.8 and 100%, respectively. The leading dominant species formed a continuum according to the salt gradiant. The similarity between Baealo and Suncheon Bay was relatively high, and Jido was quite different from the others in species composition. Aster tripolium was stenohaline and appeared at the low salt concentration, but Suaeda maritima and Suaeda asparagoides were duryhaline and occured at the relatively high salt concentration.
Reclaimed tidal areas for rice cultivation are irrigated with salt mixed water when there is severe drought. Therefore, we identified the critical concentration of saline water for rice growth on a reclaimed saline soil in Korea. The experiment was conducted at the Kyehwado substation of the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES) during 2001-2002. Two experimental fields with 0.1-0.2% for low soil salinity and 0.3-0.4% for medium soil salinity levels were used. The experiment involved four levels of salt solution mixed with sea water (at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7%) compared with a control using tap water in a split-plot design with three replicates. Saline solution was applied only two times at seedling stage (10 DAT and 25 DAT) for 5 days. Gyehwabyeo and dongjinbyeo, japonica rice varieties, were used in this experiment. Plant height and number of tillers sharply decreased in the 0.5% saline water in low soil salinity level and 0.1% in medium soil salinity level. For yield components, panicle number per unit area and percentage of ripened grain dramatically decreased in the 0.5% saline water in low soil salinity and 0.1% in medium soil salinity level. But 1,000-grain weight of brown rice decreased sharply in the 0.5% saline water in low soil salinity and 0.3% in medium soil salinity, indicating that this component was not much affected unlike other yield components. Milled rice yield decreased significantly with saline water level in both low and medium soil salinity. In the 0.7% low saline soil, the yield index was only 36% compared with the control. In medium soil salinity, even the control plot showed only 62% yield index compared with the control in the low soil salinity treatment. Results indicated that the critical concentration of saline water for rice growth in terms of economical income of rice production was 0.5% in low soil salinity and tap water in medium soil salinity.

Food waste (FW) emissions in South Korea amounted to 4.77 million tons in 2021, and continue to increase. Various technologies have been developed to treat FW, with recent research focusing on biochar production through pyrolysis to reduce FW. However, the agricultural application of food waste-biochar (FWBC) is limited by the salt accumulated during pyrolysis. This study investigated salt removal from and the kinetic characteristics of FWBC, and subsequently evaluated its agricultural applications. FW was pyrolyzed at 350℃ for 4 h, and subsequently washed for 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 5, 15, and 30 min to remove salt. FWBC had a salt concentration of 5.75%, which was effectively removed through washing. The salt concentration decreased rapidly at the beginning (1 min) and then slowly decreased, unlike in FW, in which the salt decreased continuously and slowly. The salt removal speed constant (K) was 1.5586 (Stage 1, FWBC) > 0.0445 (Stage 2, FWBC) > 0.0026 (FW). In a lettuce cultivation experiment, higher biomass was achieved using washed FWBC than when using unwashed FWBC and FW, and soil properties were improved. Overall, these findings suggest that although FW reduction using pyrolysis causes a salt accumulation problem, the salt can be effectively removed through washing. The use of washed FWBC can enhance plant growth and soil properties.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of high concentrations of salts in soil on the growth, yield, quality, photosynthetic rate, and mineral uptake of tomato ('House Momotaro') in pot cultivation. The growth of tomato such as plant height, top plant weight and root weight decreased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. Yield decreased by 31% and 41% in EC 5.0 and $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively compared with the salt concentration of EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Yield reduction was caused by low mean weight and number of fruit if at high salt concentration in soil, and affected by low photosynthetic rate and water potential in leaf, The rate of blossom-end rot was highest (16.7%) in EC $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and increased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. The contents of soluble solids and titratable acids showed a tendency to increase with increasing the concentrations of salts in soils. Photosynthetic rate, water potential and stomatal conductance in leaf decreased as the salt concentration in soil increased. The higher the salt concentration in soil, the lower the mineral uptake such as T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg but, the higher the content of Na.
Corn (Zea may L.) and Algae (Botridium sp.) were grown in the nutrient solution to investestigate the effects of humic substances on the moderation of high salt toxicity. The results are as follows: 1) The addition of small amount of humic substances (5 ppm C) drastically decreased the high salt toxicity of corn growth. 2) The addition of 20ppm humic substances was also decreased the high salt toxicity in algaegrowth. Different concentration of humic substances, however, did not show significant difference in algae yield.
This study was conducted in Jeju Island to find the effects of livestock manure application on the changes in soil salt concentration and $NO_3-N$ contents. Soil samples were collected from Goojua-Tong (volcanic ash soil) and Aewol-Tong(non-volcanic ash soil) to 50 cm depth and were mixed with livestock manure to 20 cm depth in PVC container(30 cm diameter, 1 m height). Animal manures of cattle, pig, and fowl were adjusted to 0, 50, 100,150 ton/ha. Animal manure applications increased the salt concentrations in soil. The salt concentration was increased as the fowl manure amount was increased The effects were larger in order of fowl manure > cattle manure $\fallingdotseq$ pig manure. $NO_3-N$ contents in soil showed a sharp increase by applications of fowl manure, but the increase was slow when the cattle and pig manures were applied. In volcanic ash soil, there was no change in phosphate contents by application of animal manures, but the phosphate contents increased in non-volcanic ash soil with the application of animal manure, especially by fowl manure.
To investigate the solute pattern of salt marsh plants in Suncheon Bay in Korea, plants and soil samples were collected at three sites from July to September 2011. The soil pH around the investigated species was weakly alkaline, 6.9-8.1. The total ion and Cl- content of site 1 gradually increased, while those of site 2 and site 3 were lowest in August and highest in September. The exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^+$ in the soil were relatively constant during the study period, but the soil exchangeable $Na^+$ content was variable. Carex scabrifolia and Phragmites communis had constant leaf water content and very high concentrations of soluble carbohydrates during the study period. However, Suaeda malacosperma and S. japonica had high leaf water content and constant very low soluble carbohydrate concentrations. Carex scabrifolia accumulated similar amounts of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ions in its leaves. Phragmites communis contained a high concentration of $K^+$ ions. Suada japonica and S. malacosperma had more $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions than $K^+$ ions in their leaves. Suaeda japonica had higher levels of glycine betaine in its leaves under saline conditions than C. scabrifolia and P. communis. Consequently, the physiological characteristics of salt marsh chenopodiaceous plants (S. japonica and S. malacosperma) were the high storage capacity for inorganic ions (especially alkali cations and chloride) and accumulation of glycine betaine, but monocotyledonous plant species (C. scabrifolia and P. communis) showed high $K^+$concentrations, efficient regulation of ionic uptake, and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates. These characteristics might enable salt marsh plants to grow in saline habitats.
Reclaimed tidal area is a great agricultural resource in the world. Improvement and utilization of reclaimed soil is an important measure for expanding land resource. This study was conducted to evaluate relative salt-tolerance of plants and its effect for improving saline soil. Eighteen tolerance plants were selected from China, Pakistan and Korea the climate of which is different. The emergence of different varieties in reclaimed soil was in order as FL478>Barnyard grass>Pokkali>Atriplex>Sesbania>Rumex>Alfalfa>Tall Fescue>Ryegrass>Sudan grass. Four varieties, Barnyard grass, Sesbania, Atriplex and Limonium were selected for soil improvement in reclaimed land. Cultivation of Sesbania, Barnyard grass and Atriplex were good to soil physico-chemical quality. Also these plants increased soil organic matter contents and reduced soil salt concentration. Organic matter contents of cultivated soils of Sesbania, Barnyard grass and Atriplex were $4.10g\;kg^{-1}$, $4.60g\;kg^{-1}$ and $2.81g\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. On the other hand organic matter content of uncultivated soils was $2.65g\;kg^{-1}$. As Sesbania and Barnyard grass were applied to cultivated soil like green manure, bulk density improved from $1.42Mg\;m^{-3}$ to $1.39Mg\;m^{-3}$.

This study was conducted to examine the basis for the information to select the suitable potato varieties grown in new reclaimed land. The potatoes of five varieties were planted in the port with 4 different electrical conductivities of saturated extracts of soil taken the Saemangeum reclamation area, which was made of non-treatment salt and three concentrations of salt treatment, 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively. All of the potato varieties were uniformly emerged without missing plant in all treatment groups, even 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$ treatment group. According to the salt concentration of soil, required date to the emergence of the potato comparing to non-treatment salt was delayed 3-4 days in 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 6-10 days in 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 7-13 days in 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively, and the number of its branch decreased by 14-58% comparing to non-treatment salt depending on varieties. Since the increase of the salt concentration of the soil was more serious the decrease of the number of its branch, but plant height tended to increase when branch number per plant was small, which was depending on more number of its branch than salt concentration. Fresh tuber yield of potato comparing to non-treatment salt were decrease 33.7% in 1.6 dS $m^{-1}$, 59.5% in 3.2 dS $m^{-1}$, 79.3% 7-13 days in 4.8 dS $m^{-1}$, respectively. The threshold EC starting the growth inhibition of fresh weight decreased was 1.2 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chudong, 1.8 $m^{-1}$ for Chubeak, 1.9 $m^{-1}$ for Chugang and Chuyeong, and 2.0 $m^{-1}$ for Sumi, and EC which decreased 50% of dry weight index was 2.4 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chubaek, 2.45 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chudong, 2.81 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chugang, 3.03 dS $m^{-1}$ for Chuyeong, and 3.29 dS $m^{-1}$ for Sumi. The present results suggest that Sumi is considered to the suitable potato variety grown on saline soils.
