Sap flux density (SFD) measurements were used, in combination with morphological characteristics of trees and forest structure, to calculate whole-tree transpiration, stand transpiration (St) and mean canopy stomatal conductance (Gs). Analysis based on the relationships between the morphological characteristics of trees and whole tree water use, and on the responses of SFD and Gs to short wave radiation (RR), vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil water content (SWC) during drought and non-drought periods were conducted. The results showed a strong positive correlation between whole tree transpiration and both tree diameter at breast height (DBH) ($r^2$ = 0.95, P < 0.05) and sapwood area (SA) ($r^2$ = 0.98, P < 0.05). Relationships between SFD and DBH ($r^2$ = 0.25), as well as SA ($r^2$ = 0.17) were weak. Daily SFD of Quercus serrata Thunb was closely related to VPD and RR. Although operating at different time scales, RR and VPD were important interacting environmental controls of tree water use. SFD increased with increasing VPD (<1 kPa) and RR. SWC had a considerable effect on stand transpiration during the drought period. The relationships between SFD, VPD and RR were distorted when SWC dropped below 35%.

ln this paper, a finite element analysis procedure is proposed for the incremental multi-step excavations in a fluid-saturated porous medium such as saturated soil ground. As the basis of derivation, Biot's equation was used. The proposed procedure was applied to some one- and two-dimensional problems under incremental excavations. Unsaturated cases as well as saturated cases were considered for comparison. Through numerical tests, the effects of permeability and excavation speed on the deformation history was investigated. Results showed that pore pressure built up during incremental excavation has a significant effect on the deformation and stresses of solid skeleton and validated the use of the present procedure for the analysis of multi-step excavations in fluid-saturated media such as in saturated shallow ground.
This paper presents analysis of the interaction between tunnel and Qanat with a particular interest for the optimization of Qanat shape using the discrete element code, PFC2D, and the results will be compared with the FEM results of PLAXIS2D. For these concerns, using software PFC2D based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), a model with dimension of 100m ⁎ 100 m was prepared. A circular tunnel with dimension of 9 m was situated 20 m below the ground surface. Also one Qanat was situated perpendicularly above the tunnel roof. Distance between Qanat center and ground surface was 8 m. Five different shapes for Qanat were selected i.e., square, semi-circular, vertical ellipse, circular and horizontal ellipse. Confining pressure of 5 MPa was applied to the model. The vertical displacement of balls situated in ground surface was picked up to measure the ground subsidence. Also two measuring circles were situated at the tunnel roof and at the Qanat roof to check the vertical displacements. The properties of the alluvial soil of Tehran city are: γdry=19 (KN/㎥), E= 750 (kg/㎠), ν=0.35, c=0.3(kg/㎠), φ=34°. In order to validate the DEM results, a comparison between the numerical results (obtained in this study) and analytical and field monitoring have been done. The PFC2D results are compared with the FEM results. The results shows that when Qanat has rectangular shape, the tensile stress concentration at the Qanat corners has maximum value while it has minimum value for vertical ellipse shape. The ground subsidence for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. The vertical displacements at the tunnel roof for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. Historical shape of Qante approved the finding of this research.

The crossing construction under railroad have two methods which are cut and cover and trenchless method. First, cut and cover method is an extremely limited method concerning non-running time. Whereas, trenchless method is free from restriction such as train speed and running time, and has the strong points of safe and rapid construction. Front Jacking method, one of the trenchless methods, is frequently applied recently due to its stability during construction and vantage of assuring schedule reliability. The procedure is that after minimizing interlocking friction with structure and earth pressure due to jacking the small steel tube, pulling the precast box manufactured at the field in the ground using PC strand and hydraulic Jack. This method is able to be applied regardless of section size and length of box and condition of soil. And that is also pro-environmental. This paper presents the case of Daejeon E. W. perforate Road Project applied with the Front Jacking method.
Since slope sliding and loss of railway triggered by a rainfall produce instability in the operation of trains, a proper method to estimate the slope stability considering rainfall Is required. from the field study, sliding induced by rainfall depends on the engineering properties of soils, three dimensional aspect of the slope, rainfall intensity and geological conditions of the soil layers. In this study, among various types of sliding, slope Instability caused by the surface runoff water at the concave zones in a slope is investigated. The depth of runoff water is calculated by using the Rational method and Manning equation. The occurrence of runoff water is evaluated by a comparison between the calculated infiltration rate and rainfall intensity. Pressure heads which can be calculated from the modified Iverson model are used to calculate the factor of safety along the vertical depth of the slope. The modified Iverson model considers the depth of runoff water, thus the maximum hydraulic gradient along the depth of slope is greater than one.
In this paper, numerical pile segment analysis is conducted with an advanced soil elastoplastic model to investigate the diameter effects on skin friction behaviour of a drilled shaft in sand. Ultimate skin friction and 't-z' behavior from the pile segment analyses for drilled shafts show good agreement with those from design methods. Higher ultimate skin friction for the smaller diameter pile is related to the greater increase in the effective radial stress at the interface due to the localized dilation at and near the pile interface. Stiffer t-z curve for the smaller diameter pile is related to the early occurrence of three shear stages (early, dilation, constant volume shear stages). The diameter effects on ultimate skin friction of drilled shafts are more prominent for denser sand and lower confining pressure.

The waveform micropile is a type of foundation that has a single or multiple shear keys on the pile shaft, and it is constructed through a jet grouting method as a way to increase the shaft resistance of the bonded area between the pile and the soil. In this paper, a geotechnical centrifuge test was performed to study the axial performance of the waveform micropile from other models. The six test models consisted of three waveform micropiles with a single shear key at three different depths, a waveform micropile with multiple shear keys, a conventional micropile, and a jet grouting micropile. Based on the test results, it was clearly shown that the waveform micropile increased in its bearing capacity compared to the other models without the shear key. Additionally, it was observed that the confining pressure for the location of a shear key is directly related to the increase of the bearing capacity.
This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to out-of-plane floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in Korean Building Code for Structural Concrete. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For the plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate variations of the strength with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.
Purpose: As application-specific wireless sensor networks are gaining popularity, this paper discusses the development and field performance of the GHAN, a greenhouse area network system to monitor, control, and access greenhouse microenvironments. GHAN, which is an upgraded system, has many new functions. It is an intelligent wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) system for next-generation greenhouses, which enhances the state of the art of greenhouse automation systems and helps growers by providing them valuable information not available otherwise. Apart from providing online spatial and temporal monitoring of the greenhouse microclimate, GHAN has a modified vapor pressure deficit (VPD) fuzzy controller with an adaptive-selective mechanism that provides better control of the greenhouse crop VPD with energy optimization. Using the latest soil-matrix potential sensors, the GHAN system also ascertains when, where, and how much to irrigate and spatially manages the irrigation schedule within the greenhouse grids. Further, given the need to understand the microclimate control dynamics of a greenhouse during the crop season or a specific time, a statistical assessment tool to estimate the degree of optimality and spatial variability is proposed and implemented. Methods: Apart from the development work, the system was field-tested in a commercial greenhouse situated in the region of Punjab, India, under different outside weather conditions for a long period of time. Conclusions: Day results of the greenhouse microclimate control dynamics were recorded and analyzed, and they proved the successful operation of the system in keeping the greenhouse climate optimal and uniform most of the time, with high control performance.

Since groundwater flow paths have one of the major roles to transport the radioactive nuclides from the radioactive waste repository to the biosphere, the discrete fracture network model is used for the rock block scale flow instead of the porous continuum model. This study aims to construct a three dimensional discrete fracture network to interpret the groundwater flow system in the study site. The modeling work includes the determination of the probabilistic distribution function from the fracture geometric and hydraulic parameters, three dimensional fracture modeling and model calibration. The results of the constant pressure tests performed in a fixed interval length at boreholes indicate that the flow dimension around boreholes shows mainly radial to spherical flow pattern. The fracture transmissivity value calculated by Cubic law is 6.12${\times}$10$\^$-7/ ㎡/sec with lognormal distribution. The conductive fracture intensity estimated by FracMan code is 1.73. Based on this intensity, the total number of conductive fractures are obtained as 3,080 in the rock block of 100 m${\times}$100 m${\times}$100 m.
