To estimate the soil quality of Miryang area, soil analysis were conducted according to the city and out of city of soil expenses at according to analysis components and heavy metal pollution of irradiation sampling sites. The through soil components the principal element about the 71% $SiO_2\;and\;Al_2O_3$, the pH of field area near the city center was lower than that of the other field area, which indicated that this acidification was probably attributed to the acid rain caused by the traffic exhaust gas such as $SO_x\;and\;NO_x$. Acidification was more severe in the field area than in the farming land. The concentration of five heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Pb, As and Cr were found to be lower than the standard of soil pollution. An assessment using the SPI(Soil Pollution Index), which was developed to estimate an overall soil quality, was performed. Each SPS(Soil Pollution Score) were evaluated with the results of the data from this study. The soil quality of most area of Miryang land was determined to Class 1, which indicated that the soil was healthy.

Many researches in Korea have been performed to understand the pollution of stream waters by acid mine drainage. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the effect of particulate and colloidal fractions on the transport of trace metals. To estimate harmful effects of trace metals, it is important to evaluate the particulate and colloidal metals as well as dissolved metals, because particulate and colloidal fractions of trace metals play an important role in transport of trace metals and may adversely affect habitats and organisms in riverine system. Colloids are solids with effective diameters in size range from 0.001 $\mu$m to 1 $\mu$m. According to Jone et al. (1974), metals in surface water, like Al, Fe, and Mn, require filtration with pore-size membranes smaller than 0.45 $\mu$m to define dissolved concentrations. The main objective of this study is to understand the effects of particulate, colloidal, and truly dissolved fractions on the transport and fate of trace metals in acid mine drainage. This study was conducted for the Onjeong creek in the Uljin mine area. Sampling was carried out in 13 sites, spatially covering the area from mine dumps to the downstream Onjeong reservoir. To examine the metal partitioning between particulate, colloidal, and truly dissolved fraction, we used successive filtration techniques consisting of conventional method (using 0.45 $\mu$m membranes) and tangential-flow ultrafiltration (using 0.001 $\mu$mm membranes). Ultrafiltration may seperate much smaller particles from aqueous phase (Josephson, 1984; Hernandez and Stallard, 1988). The analysis of metals were performed by inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES: model Perkin Elmer OPTIMA3000XL). Anions such as SO$_4$, Cl and NO$_3$ were measured with ion chromatograph (IC: model Dionex 120). Sample analysis is still in progress. The preliminary data show that the studied creek is severely polluted by Al, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. Toward upstream sites with relatively lower pH, less than 50% of Al and Fe occur in the sorbed form on particles or colloids, whereas more than 80% of Al and Fe occur in the sorbed form in downstream sites or tributaries with relatively higher pH. Less than 30% of Zn is present in particle or colloidal forms in the whole range of creek. Truly dissolved fraction of trace metals is negatively correlated with pH. The Kd values for Al, Fe and Zn consistently increase with increasing pH and decrease with increasing particle concentration.
To estimate buffer capacity and sensitivity of forest ecosystem to acid rain in Taejon, ionic components of throughfall, stemflow, soil leachate, and open rain in Pinus rigida and Quercus variabilis forest were analysed. The spatial sensitivity based on parent rock and forest type was given by IDRISI of GIS which created imagery conversion from soil and vegetation map. Parent rocks and soils were classified into acidic, sedimentary, metamorphic rock and then subdivided based on $SiO_2$ content. Average pH of vegetation leachate was higher in throughfall but lower in stemflow than open rain and higher in Quercus variabilis forest than in Pinus rigida forest. The flow of $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $Cl^-$ through vegetation leaching(throughfall plus stemflow) into soil were 7.2, 4.3, and 2.5 times, respectively, higher in Pinus rigida forest and 4.4, 2, and 2.5 times, respectively, higher in Quercus variabilis forest than in open field. But the concentration of exchangeable cations was 4.1 times higher in Pinus rigida forest and 4.6 times higher in Quercus variabilis forest than in open field. Average pH of soil leachate was lower than that of throughfall, but higher than that of stemflow. The concentration of exchangeable canons and $Al^{3+}$ in soil leachate were more in Pinus rigida forest than in Quercus variabilis forest and increase signficantly with the increase of acidic deposits. Pinus forest had more deposition and canopy interception of acidic pollutants and more nutrient loss than Quercus forest, and Quercus forest had more cation exchange and proton consumption and than consequently had less nutrient loss and better buffer capacity than Pinus forest. The 69% of forest soils was distributed on acidic rock, 25% of it on metamorphic rock, and 6% of it on intermediate and basic rock. Acidic rock residuals which had low very canon exchange capacity and high sensitivity to acid rain occupied a half of total forest land in Taejon area. Therefore forests in Taejon showed high vulnerability to acid rain and will receive much more stress with the increase of acid rain precursors.
In order to remediate acid mine drainage (AMD) from the Jeongam coal mine, steel mill slag, cow manure and limestone were used. As a result of batch test, the proper amounts for treating 1 L of acid mine water from the mine were determined as 15 g of steel mill slag, 15 g of cow manure and 500 g of limestone. After feasibility test, remediation system was arranged in the order of steel mill slag tank combination of cow manure and limestone, precipitation tank and oxidation tank. During 54 days' operations, the pH values of the treated waters increased from 3.0 to 8.3 and 61 % of sulfate concentration in an initial water was decreased. In addition, the removal efficiencies for metals in the water were nearly 99.9% for Al, Fe, Zn and 92.6% for Mn. Thus, the combination of steel mill slag, cow manure and limestone can be used as neutralization 때d metal removal for acid mine drainage.
It has been well established that aluminum (Al) inhibits root tip growth rapidly in acid soil. We report the correlation between Al induced growth inhibition and impaired $H^+-flux$ in mung bean (Vigna radiate L. cv. Kumsung). The root growth inhibition was dependent on Al concentration (0, 10, 25, 50, $100{\mu}M$) and exposure time (12 and 24 h). Using Hematoxylin staining, it was observed that the root damage was occurred preferentially in regions with high Al accumulation. Using the pH indicator, it was shown that the surface pH of root tip was strongly alkalized in the control whereas changed only slightly in the $50{\mu}M$ Al-treated root. The $H^+-ATPase$ activity of plasma membrane vesicles was inhibited by 56% in the Al-treated roots compared to control root. Decrease in the amount of the plasma membrane $H^+-ATPase$ (100 kDa) translation in the plant roots under Al stress was demonstrated by Western blot analysis. These results indicate that the dynamics of $H^+-flux$ across the root tip play an important role in root growth under Al stress.
To develop multifunctional microbial inoculant, an insluble phosphate-solubilizing bacterium with antifungal activity was isolated from plant rhizospheric soil. On the basis of its morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics and Biolog analysis, this bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens RAF15. P. fluorescens RAF15 showed antifungal activities against phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea and Rhizoctonia solani. The optimal medium composition and cultural conditions for the solubilization of insoluble phosphate by P. fluorescens RAF15 were 1.5% of glucose, 0.005% of urea, 0.3% $MgCl_2{\cdot}6H_2\;0.01%\;of\;MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.01%,\;of\;CaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, and 0.05% of NaCl along with initial pH 7.0 at $30^{\circ}C$. The soluble phosphate production under optimum condition was 863 mg/L after 5 days of cultivation. The solubilization of insoluble phosphates was associated with a drop in the pH of the culture medium. P. fluorescens RAF15 showed resistance against different environmental stresses like $10-35^{\circ}C$ temperature, 1-4% salt concentration and pH 2-11 range. The strain produced soluble phosphate to the culture broth with the concentrations of 971-1121 mg/L against $CaHPO_4$, 791-908 mg/L against $Ca_3(PO_4){_2}$, and 844 mg/L against hydroxyapatite, respectively. However, the strain produced soluble phosphate to the culture broth with the concentrations of 15 mg/L against $FePO_4$, and 5 mg/L against $AlPO_4$, respectively.
A fungal strain, capable of solubilizing insoluble phosphate under diverse temperature, pH and salt conditions was isolated from Waste Mushroom bed of Agaricus bisporus in South Korea. Based on 18S rRNA analysis, the strain was identified as Aspergillus awamori bxq33110. The strain showed maximum phosphate solubilization in AYG medium (525 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) followed by NBRIP medium (515 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$). The strain solubilized $Ca_3(PO_4)_2$ to a greater extent and rock phosphate and $FePO_4$ to a certain extent. However $AlPO_4$ solubilizing ability of the strain was found to be very low. Glucose at the rate of 2% ($561{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) was found be the best carbon source for Aspergillus awamori bxq33110 to solubilize maximum amount of phosphate. However, no significant difference ($P{\leq}0.05$) in phosphorus solubilization was found between 1% and 2% glucose concentrations. $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was the best nitrogen source for Aspergillus awamori bxq33110 followed by $NH_4Cl$ and $NH_4NO_3$. At pH 7, temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and 5% salt concentration (674 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) were found to be the optimal conditions for insoluble phosphate solubilization. However, strain Aspergillus awamori bxq33110 was shown to have the ability to solublize phosphate under different stress conditions at $30-40^{\circ}C$ temperature, pH 7-10 and 0-10% salt concentrations indicating it's potential to be used as bio-inoculants in different environmental conditions.
A mixed forest of pines (Pines densiflora and Pinus rigida) and an oak forest (Quercus mongolica) in Mt. Kwanak in Seoul were limed with 1.5 t/ha and 3 t/ha of dolomite in 1993 and investigated the effects of liming on the chemical changes in the 0-5 cm and 5∼10 cm layers of soil from 1994 to 1995. Soil pH values were greater in the limed plots than in the control plot by the unit of 0.1-0.6 in the pine forest and 0.1∼0.2 in the oak forest. Ca concentrations in the limed plots were greater than those in the control plots in both the pine and oak forests. A considerable increase in Mg concentrations in soil was observed in the limed plots. K and Na concentrations in the limed plots appeared to decrease in both the pine and oak forests two years after liming. Although Al concentrations were greater in the limed plots than in the control plot in the pine forest in 1994, there was a tendency of a decrease in the concentration of this metal in the limed plots in 1995. Mn concentrations also tended to decrease in the limed plots in both the pine and oak forests.
Acid mine drainage(AMD) treatment is classified as both passive and active treatment. During the treatment, about 5,000 tons of neutralization sludge is generated as a by-product per year in Korea. This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of sludge generated from physico·chemical treatment processes as an active treatment from 5 different sources (D, H, S, T, Y) and the possibility of the sludges being recycled. The sludges have a pH range of 5.86 ~ pH 7.89, and a water content range of 51% ~ 82%. Most of particle sizes were less than 25 ㎛. In analysis of inorganic elements, the concentration of Al, Fe, and Mn were between 1,189 mg/kg ~ 129,344 mg/kg, 106,132 mg/kg ~ 338,011 mg/kg, and 3,472 mg/kg ~ 11,743 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of As and Zn in sludge-T, Cd in sludge-D, Ni in sludge-H, Zn in sludge-S, and Cd in sludge-Y exceeded the soil contamination standards of Korea. The results from 2 separate kinds of leaching test, the Korea Standard Leaching Test(KSLT) and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP), showed that all the sludges met the Korea groundwater standards. From the XRD and SEM-EDS analysis, the peaks of calcite and quartz were found in the sludges. The sludge also had a high proportion of Fe and O, and the majority of the composition was amorphous iron hydroxide.
Two kinds of crude oil-degrading microorganisms from soil and one kind from sea were isolated and named strain Al32, strain F722 and strain OM1, respectively. These microorganism were identified Acinetobacter sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, respectively. The optimum cultivation temperature of Acinetobacter sp. A132 and P. aeruginosa F722 was $35^{\circ}C$ and optimum growth pH was 8 and 9, respectively. The growth was the highest at 2.0% (w/v) substrate concentration when crude oil was only carbon source. The growth of A. calcoaceticus OM1 isolated from sea was the highest at 3.0% (w/v) of crude oil. In inspection of crude oil degradability, strain Al32 showed 5.49 g/L.day with Eleuthera (OMAN), 2.0% (w/v). P. aeruginosa F722 showed 1.19 g/L g/L.day with L-Zakum (AFRICA). In case of kerosene $nC_9\simnC_{20}$ and diesel $nC_9\simnC_{28}$, A. calcoaceticus OM1 was degraded 95% and 75%, respectively, for 7 days culture, and P. aeruginosa F722 was 80% after 10 days.
