This paper concerns the finite element (FE) modeling approach for NATM tunneling in water bearing ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as soil-water characteristics, location of hydraulic boundary conditions, the way of modeling drainage flow, among others. The results indicate that the soil-water characteristics plays the most important role in the tunneling-induced settlement characteristics. Based on the results, modeling guidelines were suggested for stress-pore prssure coupled finite element modeling of NATM tunneling.

Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. Among various modeling techniques, equivalent cantilever method seems relatively simple for modeling pile groups and it has some problems to determine the virtual fixed points. Through the analyses, it was found that the method of nonlinear p-y model with soil springs was more appropriate than equivalent cantilever method. The method modeling a pile group using stiffness matrix seems useful for practical design, which can represent the nonlinear three-dimensional behavior of a piled pier. In this study, the stiffness matrix of a pile group could be estimated efficiently and precisely using three-dimensional nonlinear analysis programs of pile groups (FBPier 3.0, YSGroup).

Physicochemical phenomena in soils are dependent upon pH when using electrokinetic extraction for the contaminants removal especially for heavy metals. pH variation in soils is affected on H$\^$+/ and OH ̄ ions produced by electrolysis reaction and buffer capacity of soil. High amount of heavy metals are retained in the soils if the soil buffer capacity remains high enough to resist a change in pH. Therefore, accurate pH estimation of soil is important in the application of electrokinetic mechanism for decontamination and understanding of subsurface physicochemical characteristics is also required as well as considering buffer capacity for the enhanced methods application. For these, buffer capacity and pH distribution were measured for the four soils, and also compared with modeling results. The results of buffer modeling were good agreement with experimental data. It is showed that four soils were effected by buffer capacity

During the last few decades, excavation automation has been investigated to protect the operator from the hazardous working environment and to relieve the cost of the skilled operator. Therefore, a number of modelling and controller design methods of the hydraulic excavator are proposed in many literatures to realize the excavation automation. In this article, a geometric approach far the multi-body system modeling is adopted to develop the excavator mechanism model that contains 4 kinematic loops and 12 links. Considering a simple soil mechanism model with a number of uncertain soil parameters, an adaptive trajectory tracking control strategy based on the developed excavator model is proposed. The improved performance of the designed controller over the simple PID controller is validated via the simulation study.

This study aims to present accurate soil modeling and validation of a single roadside guardrail post as well as a single concrete pile installed near cut slopes or compacted sloping embankment. The conventional Winkler's elastic spring model and p-y curve approach for horizontal ground cannot directly be applied to sloping ground where ultimate soil resistance is significantly dependent on ground inclination. In this study, both grid-based 3-D FE model and particle-based SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) model available in LS-DYNA have been adopted to predict the static behavior of a laterally loaded guardrail post. The SPH model has potential to eliminate any artificial soil stiffness due to the deterioration of the node-connected Lagrangian soil mesh. For this purpose, this study comprises two parts. Firstly, only 3-D FE modeling has been tested to show the numerical validity for a single concrete pile in sloping ground using Mohr-Coulomb material. However, this material option cannot be implemented for SPH elements. Nevertheless, Mohr-Coulomb model has been used since this material model requires six input soil data that can be obtained from the comparative papers in literatures. Secondly, this work is extended to compute the lateral resistance of a guardrail post located near the slope using the hybrid approach that combines Lagrange FE elements and SPH elements by the suitable node-merging option provided by LS-DYNA. For this analysis, the FHWA soil material developed for application to road-base soils has been used and also allows the application of SPH element.
Numerical simulation of dynamic soil-pile-structure interaction embedded in a dry sand was carried out. 3D model of the dynamic centrifuge model tests was formulated in a time domain to consider nonlinear behavior of soil using the finite difference method program, FLAC3D. As a modeling methodology, Mohr-Coulomb criteria was adopted as soil constitutive model. Soil nonlinearity was considered by adopting the hysteretic damping model, and an interface model which can simulate separation and slip between soil and pile was adopted. Simplified continuum modeling (Kim et al., 2012) was used as boundary condition to reduce analysis time. Calibration process for numerical modeling results and test results was performed through the parametric study. Verification process was then performed by comparing numerical modeling results with another test results. Based on the calibration and validation procedure, it is identified that proposed modeling method can properly simulate dynamic behavior of soil-pile system in dry condition.

The numerical analysis of groundwater flow is indispensable for predicting problems associated with water resource development, civil works, environmental hazards, and nuclear power plant construction. Korea lacks public regulatory procedures and guidelines for groundwater flow modeling, especially in nuclear facility sites, which makes adequate evaluation difficult. Feasible step-by-step guidelines are also unavailable. Consequently, reports on groundwater flow modeling have low-grade quality and often present controversial opinions. Additionally, without public guidelines, maintaining consistency in reviewing reports and enforcing laws is more challenging. In this study, the guidelines for groundwater flow modeling were reviewed for three countries - the United States (Documenting Groundwater Modeling at Sites Contaminated with Radioactive Substances), Canada (Guidelines for Groundwater Modelling to Assess Impacts of Proposed Natural Resource Development Activities), and Australia (Australian Groundwater Modelling Guidelines), with the aim of developing groundwater flow modeling regulatory guidelines that can be applied to nuclear facilities in Korea, in accordance with the Groundwater Act, Environmental Impact Assessment Act, and the Nuclear Safety Act.
This paper studies soil properties uncertainty and its implementation in the seismic response evaluation of structures. For this, response sensitivity of two 4- and 12-story RC shear walls to the soil properties uncertainty by considering soil structure interaction (SSI) effects is investigated. Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation (BNWF) model is used for shallow foundation modeling and the uncertainty of soil properties is expanded to the foundation stiffness and strength parameters variability. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique is employed for probabilistic evaluations. By investigating the probabilistic evaluation results it's observed that as the soil and foundation become stiffer, the soil uncertainty is found to be less important in influencing the response variability. On the other hand, the soil uncertainty becomes more important as the foundation-structure system is expected to experience nonlinear behavior to more sever degree. By comparing the results of the approximate methods with the results obtained from MC, it's observed that the results of both FOSM and ASCE41 methods are in good agreement with the results of MC simulation technique and they show acceptable accuracy in predicting the response variability.

This paper presents the modeling of geosynthetic-reinforced compacted soils and discusses the reinforcement effect arising from confining the dilatancy deformation of the soil by geosynthetics. A series of compressive shear tests for compacted sandy soil specimens wrapped by geosynthetics are carried out by quantitatively examining the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect, occurring from a confinement of the dilative deformation in compacted soils during shearing. In the test, the initial degree of compaction is changed for each series of sandy soil specimens so that each series has different degree of dilatancy characteristics. Herein, the axial forces working on the geosynthetics so as to prevent dilative deformation of compacted soils during shearing are measured. Furthermore, the elasto-plastic modeling of compacted soils and a rational determination procedure for input parameters needed in the elasto-plastic modeling are presented. And to describe the irreversible deformation characteristics of compacted soils during shearing, the subloading yielding surface (Hashiguchi (1989)) to the elasto-plastic modeling is introduced. Finally, the elasto-plastic finite element simulation is carried out and the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect is discussed.
