  • This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.

  • Levee-break Analysis model is developed to predict the variation of breach width according to time and to estimate inundation area and depth in protected lowland. This Model calculate flood depth using 4 point implicit finite difference method in river channel and analyze breach flow based on physical theory introducing soil transport equation and erosion process. Breach analysis model and channel flood model are combined into Levee-Break Model and this model is applied to actual levee break case. Then, this model can simulate reasonably many levee-break parameters such as river stage, breach width, breach formation and so on. If the applicability of this model is proved through applications to more various actual levee-break cases, the suggested model is expected to do more accurate flood analyses on levee break site.

  • This paper verifies the accuracy and efficiency of the implicit stress integration algorithm for an anisotropic hardening constitutive model developed in a companion paper[Oh & Lee (1996)3. Simulation of undrained triaxial test results shows the accuracy of the method through an error estimation, and analyses of accuracy and convergence were performed for a numerical excavation problem. As a result, the stress was accurately integrated by the algorithm and the nonlinear solution was converged to be asymptotically quadratic. Furthermore nonlinear FE analysis of a real excavation problem was by performed considering the initial soil conditions and the in-situ construction sequences. The displacements of wall induced by excavation were more accurately estimated by the anisotropic hardening model than by the Cam-clay model.

  • Background and Necessity of the study : For more than 20 years, the soil engineering reserach group of Chonnam National University has been performing the deformation analysis of soft clayey foundation, since the University is located near the south-western coast of Korean Peninsulla, along which tide reclamation works have been under proaressing. Associsted with the fact mentioned above, the researchers have been developing a computer program in order to carry out deformation analysis of soft foundation since early 1980. Case-studies : In this research, the Biot's equation was selected as the governing equation coupled with several constitutive models including original and modified Cam-clay models, elasto-viscoplastic model, Lade's model etc. The anisotropy of soi1 can be considered in this program. To validate the accuracy of the computer program developed a couple of case-studies were performed. These include the pilot banking, sand drain considering smear effect and compound foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soft foundation.i) The pilot banking Good results could be acquired by assuming banking load as the body force composed of finite element mesh rather than equivalent concentrated load.ii) The sand drain Due to smear, the delay of consolidation was remarkable at the early stsge. so safety for the failure of foundation should be checked for the initial step of consolidation. iii) The compound foundation Accurate results were obtained by introducing the joint element method for the soft foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soiㅣ.

  • In this study an analytical expression is derived for the natural frequency of the wind turbine towers supported on flexible foundation. The derivation is based on a Euler-Bernoulli beam model where the foundation is represented by a stiffness matrix. Previously the natural frequency of such a model is obtained from numerical or empirical method. The new expression is based on pure physical parameters and thus can be used for a quick assessment of the natural frequencies of both the real turbines and the small-scale models. Furthermore, a relationship between the diagonal and non-diagonal element in the stiffness matrix is introduced, so that the foundation stiffness can be obtained from either the p-y analysis or the loading test. The results of the proposed expression are compared with the measured frequencies of six real or model turbines reported in the literature. The comparison shows that the proposed analytical expression predicts the natural frequency with reasonable accuracy. For two of the model turbines, some errors were observed which might be attributed to the difference between the dynamic and static modulus of saturated soils. The proposed analytical solution is quite simple to use, and it is shown to be more reasonable than the analytical and the empirical formulas available in the literature.

  • The Island of Cheju plans massive ground water development to meet predicted water demand. Effective management of ground water resources requires impact assessment study. Due to the nature of the island, effects of sea water must be considered. In this work, salt water intrusion, due to hypothetical ground water development in Eastern and Central Cheju Watersheds, is predicted using a sharp-interface model. The model considers simultaneously hydrodynamics of both freshwater and saltwater. The hypothetical ground water development was designed such that it follows closely the regional ground water development plan. The numerical model predicted that the saltwater wedge may intude over 1km depending on the location. This observation leaves doubt on impact assement studies based on freshwater-flow only modeling.

  • A series of centrifuge model tests were performed in order to investigate the behaviors of various tunnel linings. A 1/100-scaled aluminum and hydrostone horseshoe tunnel linings with a radius km, height km were buried in a depth of C/D=3 with dry Joomunjin standard sand, the relative density of which was 86%. Bending moments and thrusts along the tunnel circumference were measured by 12 strain gages. Earth pressures in soil and on lining were estimated by pressure transducers, ground surface settlements at center and edges by using LVDTs. Average Ko(coefficient of earth pressure at rest) was 0.39 for the model sand. The structural behaviors of lining depended on its damaged conditions. But, as a rule, on the crown, the tensile circumferential strain of lining occurred at the inner surface, and the compressive at the outer surface, then positive bending moment was created at the crown. The circumferential strain of the inner surface on the springline was tensile, and the outer compressive, so negative bending moment was measured at the springline. For hydrostone linings, cracks initiated at the inner surface on the crown, and the outer on the springline over average 40g.

  • The theoretical and analytical studies on dynamic signals(force and acceleration signals) measured at SPT rod are actively made. In this paper, the characteristics of stress wave(force signals) in SPT rod were studied experimentally using model rod system. It was noted that the amplitude ratios of reflected wave over incident wave in different end conditions were well matched with theoretical results. The impedance of soil could be determined if the characteristics of incident and reflected waves could be evaluated quantitatively in situ SPT test. On the other hand, the results of model tests showed that the effect of reflected wave caused by side friction was negligible, and therefore, the analysis model considering only end resistance of sampler could be applicable in dynamic analysis of SPT.

  • In this study, the accurate water quality analysis in rivers, including the non-point source is performed. First of all, watershed model, SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was applied to analyze the impact of the non-point source in study area. And then, water quality analysis integrating the point source and the non-point source is implemented using QUALKO model. For more exact simulation, it should be the calibration and verification of variables and parameters which are needed for simulation. In addition, the importance of considering the non-point source was confirmed in river water quality simulation. BOD, TN, TP were analysed, and the results shows that BOD, TN and TP concentration was increased to 16.8%, 8.2% and 25.8% respectively. The more accurate estimate will be carried if use of reliable measurements and watershed simulation be done in models linking process. The suggested technique will improve the accuracy of the water quality analysis. The methodologies presented in this study will contribute to basin-wide water quantity and quality management.

  • To investigate the source-receptor relationships aerosol model has been used to simulate the distribution behavior of the yellow sand. Data for meteorological fields were obtained by Meso-scale Analysis and Prediction Model System/Seoul National University (MAPMS/SNU) for five days (10-14 April 1988). To obtain the distributions of concentration of yellow sand, the aerosol model has been modified to allow quantifications of relative concentration distributions of yellow sand. Source regions of yellow sand were delineated by soil maps of China and emission rate as a function of wind stress(Westphal et al., 1987). Using 3-dimensional wind fields the backward trajectories from 3 receptor grids at the layer of .sigma. =0.95, 0.9, 0.85, 0.8 were calculated. In order to facilitate quantitative assessment of source-receptor relationships, it was assumed that the perturbations in along-trajectory and cross-trajectory proceed linearly with time, in accord with Gaussian distribution characteristics. On the basis of this assumption, the probability fields were calculated from every grid point with source strength 1. Using these probability fields and emission retes, the potential contributions of upstream sources along the trajectories were estimated. The results of this study indicate that the application of trajectory modeling is useful in investigating the quantitative relationship between source and receptor regions.
