  • The mechanical behavior of soil and soil-rock mixture is investigated via the discrete element method. A non-overlapping combination method of spheres is used to model convex polyhedron rock blocks of soil-rock mixture in the DEM simulations. The meso-mechanical parameters of soil and soil-rock interface in DEM simulations are obtained from the in-situ tests. Based on the Voronoi cell, a method representing volumtric strain of the sample at the particle scale is proposed. The numerical results indicate that the particle rotation, occlusion, dilatation and self-organizing force chains are a remarkable phenomena of the localization band for the soil and soil-rock mixture samples. The localization band in a soil-rock mixture is wider than that in the soil sample. The current research shows that the 3D discrete element method can effectively simulate the mechanical behavior of soil and soil-rock mixture.

  • This study focused on the characteristics of change soil water with respect to soil thickness and soil mixture ratio, in order to effectively carry out an afforestation system for a roof with a low level of management and a light weight. Soil hardness tended to increase as sand particle was increase regardless soil thickness and soil porosity had more higher artificial soil than natural soil mixture. In case of soil pH, natural soil mixture had between 6.7 and 7.4, and artificial soil mixture had 6.0~6.8. Organic matter, electrical conductance and exchangeable content were highest in $L_{10}$, which it had the highest leafmold ratio. Soil moisture tension(kPa) in 15cm soil thickness was observed natural soil mixture had a considerable change but artificial soil mixture had a gradual change when non-rainfall kept on. In the experimental $L_{10}$, $S_{10}$, $S_7L_3$ and $S_5L_5$ object, the amount of moisture tended to rapidly decrease. However, in the experimental $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$ objects, which contained pearlite and peat moss, the amount of moisture tended to gradually decrease. As a result, the use of a artificial soil mixture soil seems to be required for the afforestation of a roof for a low level of management.

  • This paper has attempted to investigate the change in soil moisture volume and temperature of architecture by planting ground(soil thickness and soil mixture ratio) and ground cover plants(Sedum sarmentosum, Zoysia japonica, Chrysanthemum zawadskii) for middle region green roof system. For this, a test was conducted on the roof of Konkuk University building from April 2009 to October 2009. In terms of treatment, five types(SL, $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$, $P_4P_4L_2$) depending on soil mixture ratio and two types(15cm, 25cm) by soil depth were created. Results of soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio in the 15cm soil thickness showed that the difference was significance between simple soil and mixture soil treatment, however, the statistical significance was not recognized according to soil mixture ratio. In case of 25cm soil thickness, soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio was more higher 7Vol.%~10Vol.% in the mixture soil than simple soil treatment. In terms of districts planted ground cover plants, soil volume moisture differed among plants in the order Zoysia japonica 17.74 Vol.%$34.86^{\circ}C$, district non-planted $27.49^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.11^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.08^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.45^{\circ}C$ respectively So, concrete surface showed more higher $5^{\circ}C{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ than other things among the all the time. Result of inner temperature of the architecture and soil, it was measured inner of architecture $25.69^{\circ}C$, inner district non-planted $24.29^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.90^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.02^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.13^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • In this study, the effects of soil conditions on antioxidant activities of the aerial and underground parts of rosemary were assessed to determine the most effective soil conditions for cultivation. The antioxidant activity was the highest (51.58±2.93 ㎍/mL) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil and vermiculite using DPPH assay. The antioxidant activity of underground parts the highest (127.48±12.38 ㎍/mL) when cultivated in the mixture of soil, vermiculite, and perlite. ABTS assay showed that the antioxidant activity of aerial parts was 230.34±57.93 ㎍·mL-1 when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil and vermiculite and that of underground parts was 320.98±16.04 ㎍·mL-1 when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil, vermiculite, and perlite. The total phenolic content of aerial parts was the highest (155.25±2.96 mg GAE/g) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil. The total flavonoid content of aerial parts was the highest (67.32±5.27 mg QE/g) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil. Therefore, the mixture of gardening soil, vermiculite, and perlite is superior to gardening soil alone for cultivation of rosemary to increase its antioxidant activity as well as total phenolic and flavonoid content.

  • Recently, geofiber(polyester) reinforced soil was added on soil-seed mixture spray to control erosion and to improve vegetation growth on rocky slope sites. This research was conducted to compare vegetation effects and soil hardness on three types of soil-seed mixture spray on stone gabion river bank [A type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system), B type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand without geofiber, C type : soil-seed mixture spray]. Evaluation were made concerning vegetation coverage, soil hardness and moisture content. The results of this study showed that A type system was effective for the growth of vegetation and soil hardness when compareed to B type and C type. A type and B type showed higher covering rate than C type on stone gabion river bank, and especially A type showed the highest covering rate. Soil hardness and water content were high on A type vegetation system compared to B type and C type. We noted that high soil hardness and high moisture content with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system) were effective both to control erosion from water current impact and to be high coverage and species of vegetation on stone gabion river bank.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical properties of reinforced soil-mixture powder. Soil was used to be powder that passed by the No. 200 mech and the reinforcement as calcium carbonate, quicklime and portland cement used for this study to improve soil. We resulted from fineness , setting time, and compressive strength test of reinforced soil-mixture powder. We've got the two conclusions . The first , in case that we were used reinforced soil-mixture powder included some portland cement, the higher the mixture rates of the reinforcement , the wider the difference theoretical data with experimental data. The second, the setting time of reinforced soil-mixture powder is faster than soil powder itself and the reinforcement for promoting strength was proved that calcium carbonate was proper than others if we compared it with other reinforcment.

  • Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of high plasticity clayey soil mixed with 5 and 10 % of Portland cement and four chemical agents such as sodium hexametaphosphate, aluminum sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium silicate with 0, 5, 10, and 20% concentrations was comparatively evaluated. The individual and combined effects of the cement and chemical agents on the UCS of the soil mixture were investigated. The strength of the soil-cement mixture generally increases with increasing the cement content. However, if the chemical agent is added to the mixture, the strength of the cement-chemical agent-soil mixture tends to vary depending on the type and the amount of the chemical agent. At low concentrations of 5% of aluminum sulfate and 5% and 10% of sodium carbonate, the average UCS of the cement-chemical agent-soil mixture slightly increased compared to pure clay due to increasing the flocculation of the clay in the mixture. However, at high concentrations (20%) of all chemical agents, the UCS significantly decreased compared to the pure clay and clay-cement mixtures. In the case of high cement content, the rate of UCS reduction is the highest among all cement-chemical agent-soil mixtures, which is more than three times higher in comparison to the soil-chemical agent mixtures without cement. Therefore, in the mixture with high cement (> 10%), the reduction of the USC is very sensitive when the chemical agent is added.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of shading degree and rooting media on the growth of Caragana sinica and Sedum middendorffianum after cutting. In C. sinica, the highest rooting rate was obtained in cuttings planted in horticultural soil (Sunshine Mix #1) and peat moss mixture (peat moss : perlite = 1 : 1, v/v) under one layer of 35% shading and in cuttings planted in kanumatsuchi soil mixture (kanumatsuchi soil : decomposition of granite = 1 : 1, v/v) under non-shading. Whereas, regardless of shading degree, most cuttings of S. middendorffianum rooted in both horticultural soil and peat moss mixture. Cuttings of C. sinica showed the highest root length, 10.4cm in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under one layer of 35% shading but the highest fresh and dry weight of roots in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under non-shading. In S. middendorffianum, the highest root length, fresh and dry weight of root were obtained in cuttings planted in horticultural soil under non-shading. With these results, we recommended that cuttings of C. sinica should be propagated in kanumatsuchi soil mixture under non-shading and cuttings of S. middendorffianum in horticultural soil under non-shading.

  • In this study, the variation of unit weight and unconfined compressive strength were investigated, calcium carbonate, quicklime, portland cement, 19mm length monofilaments and fibrillated fiber were used as reinforcement materials. And calcium chloride was added to cement and calcium carbonate reinforced soil mixture in order to accelerate setting and hardening speed. It appears that unit weight is highest in calcium carbonate reinforced soil mixture with mixing rate of 9%. According to increasing the amount of fiber in soil mixture, the unit weight decreased. It shows that the more the amount of monofilament fiber is added in soil mixture, the higher the compressive strength is, but the compressive strength is decreased in fibrillated fibrillated fiber added soil mixture with more than 1.0% of mixing rate.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical properties of reinforced soil mixture powder. Soil sample was prepared by passing into the standard sieve of No. 200 and reinforcement materials were calcium carbonate, quicklime and portland cement. Fineness, setting time, and compressive strength test for reinforced soil mixture powder were performed and analyzed to investigate their physical properties. The main results were summarized as follow. The compressive strength of soil mixture powder itself and most reinforced was reinforced according to increasing in the mixture rate of reinforcement and the rate of increase was remarkably higher in the cement reinforced soil moisture powder. It was appeared that the early compressive strength is considering higher in the cement reinforced soil moisture powder with 2% of moisture rate of accelerator.
