Low seedling growth rates of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) have been limited its good establishment to pastures. The experiment was done to determine the effect of removal of cotyledon and unifoliolate on the growth and morphological characters of contrasting white clover cultivars for 8 weeks after the treatment. Individual plants of cv. Regal (large leaf), Louisiana S-l (medium-large leaf), Grasslands Huia (medium-small leaf) and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 10cm plastic pot containing a 2:1:1 soil:sand:peat moss mixture until the cotyledon or unifoliolate stage and then removed one (C1) or two cotyledons (C2) at cotyledon stage, and unifoliolate only (U), unifoliolate and one cotyledon (DC1) or unifoliolate and two cotyledons (DC2) at the unifoliolate stage. To measure the removal effect on biomass and morphological characters (leaf area, petiole and stolon lengths, growing tips and leaves), plants were sampled 4, 6 and 8 weeks after the treatment. Intact plants had greater biomass and morphological characters than removal-treated ones, Removal treatments at cotyledon stage, C1 and C2, were decreased more biomass and morphological characters than removal ones at unifoliolate stage while the severer cotyledon removal, the more reduction. Stolon length per plant and petiole length markedly inclined 6 weeks after the treatments although biomass and the other characters continuously did. Relatively large-leaved cultivar had more biomass, leaf area per plant and longer petiole than the other(s) but the reverse results were true in stolon length, growing tips and no. of leaves per plant. Biomass was linearly increased with increased leaf area but the earlier and severer removal, the less slope. The severer damage of cotyledon and unifoliolate had detrimental effects on the growth and aftermath establishment of white clover
Tetrapion(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropionate sodium) has commonly been used for reed(Phragmites communis Trin.) control in uncultivated areas, especially in Japan. As an attempt to establish the screening system for selective herbicide controlling reed, tetrapion was tested as a standard herbicide to various weeds and crops including rice in a greenhouse. Symptoms of yellowing, twisting, stunting, and necrosis were observed in the herbicide-treated plants. The herbicide caused a severe damage on all crops examined, except cotton. Both direct seeded and transplanted rice were also sensitive to the herbicide. Its herbicidal activity was generally higher on grass weeds than on broadleaf weeds. It had a higher herbicidal activity with preemergence treatment than with postemergence treatment. In addition, field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine the effect of the herbicide on reed control. Its effect varied with the soil type of the treated field and the growth stage of reed. A relatively high dosage of the herbicide was required to control reed. It had an almost same effect on fairygrass(Miscanthus sinensis Anderss) as on reed. However, reed grown in a greenhouse was effectively controlled by the herbicide, having more effect with preemergence treatment than with postemergence treatment as observed in other plants treated with the herbicide. In conclusion, tetrapion has a great potential as a standard herbicide during the herbicide screening for selective reed control.
This study was performed to analyze the dynamics and distributional condition of biological community and to support the basic information about the estuarine ecosystem management by using the intensively surveyed results by each taxon experts around Tamjin river. We analyzed the biological diversity, abundance, correlation among species, and ecological characteristics about 11 taxa groups including vegetation, fish, birds, mammals, etc. in the Tamjin river estuarine ecosystem. We classified vegetation types into 7 physiognomic types and 18 communities according to habitat conditions with the physical environments and salinity. In total, 1125 species including 9 species of endangered species were identified in research area. The species composition and distributional characteristics of each taxon were corresponded to the environmental characteristics of the estuarine ecosystem. Especially, the species diversity and distribution were clearly distinguished in the river according to the difference of the environmental factors such as flow rate, salinity, and soil. Despite the disturbance factors such as barrage and levees, the biodiversity and its distribution were evaluated to be high level under the current environmental conditions. However, loss or reduction of wildlife habitat due to reclamation, embankment, barrage installation and expansion of farmland has been identified as a major threat to the diversity and health of the local ecosystem. The results of this study can be used as a basic data to cope with various development pressure and damage crisis of the whole estuaries including Tamjin river.

Although the long-term leakage between the box culvert and the soil contact surface is one of the main causes of the failure in the embankment of the reservoir, there is a little studies on this matter. If a leakage occurs by the structure such as the buried box culvert of reservoir embankment is partially damaged, it is difficult to observe and there is a possibility of damage caused by piping. For these reasons, more research is necessary. In this study, the embankment type of the reservoir is divided into the core type and the homogeneous type when the damaged box culvert passing through the embankment of the reservoir is leaked due to the differential behavior of materials like differential settlement. In view of the condition, the seepage analysis of 2D was performed according to the water level change. The result of the study shows that the possibility of piping increases at the upper part rather than the bottom part of the box culvert when the leakage occurs to the box culvert passing through the embankment of the reservoir. Particularly, it is considered that the presence of the core helps to maintain the seepage stability of the embankment in case where the leakage occurs at the downstream side of the embankment. Also, if there is a drastic decrease on the internal pore water pressure in the embankment of reservoir, it is necessary to consider the possibility of piping.

Wet-injury often occurs in upland cereals growing in the paddy field due to oxygen deficiency in the rhizosphere caused by excessive water in the soil. Under hypoxia, energy metabolism is diminished causing nonreversible damage to root cells. This study was conducted to investigate effects of hypoxia on root growth and enzymes involved in the fermentative energy metabolism in upland cereals including barley, wheat, rye and triticale. Young seedlings were subject to hypoxia for up to 7 days. Root fresh weight and dry weight were decreased significantly by hypoxia for 5 to 7 days in all cereal seedlings. Root growth retardation under hypoxia was lowest in barley. Hypoxia-induced increases in activity and isozyme expression of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were commonly observed in roots of all cereal seedlings. The inherent ADH activity levels were higher in barley but the hypoxia-induced increases in ADH activities were lowest in barley than other cereals. The inherent LDH activity levels were lower in barley and the hypoxia-induced increases in LDH activities were lower in barley than other cereals. The results suggest the importance of the rapid enhancement of fermentative enzyme systems for increased tolerance to hypoxia.

Prunus serrulata var. serrulata f. spontanea (E. H. Wilson) C. S. Chang was treated with dried swine excrement at various concentration levels, and their growth reactions and the contents of total kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphoric acid were analyzed. The result is as follows; 1. When the plants were treated with 0.25% of dried swine excrement, the seed germination rate of Prunus serrulata var. serrulata f. spontanea was higher than that of the control. However, it showed a tendency to decrease when the treatment concentration got higher than 0.25%. 2. The growth rate of species was highest when they were treated with 0.25% of dried swine excrement. It tended to decrease with higher treatment concentration than 0.25%. Significant difference was clear between the control and the experimental plants of Prunus serrulata var. serrulata f. spontanea. 3. The contents of nitrogen and phosphoric acid in Prunus serrulata var. serrulata f. spontanea also got higher as the concentration of dried swine excrement increased. However, the content of total kjeldahl nitrogen was highest in the leaves, and followed by the roots and stems. In contrast, the content of total phosphoric acid were highest in the roots, and followed by the leaves and stems. Therefore, stems had the lowest contents of both nitrogen and phosphoric acid. 4. The contents of total kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphoric acid in the soil were measured before and after the growth experiment of Prunus serrulata var. serrulata f. spontanea treated with dried swine excrement. The contents of nitrogen and phosphoric acid significantly decreased after the experiment. In conclusion, the contents of total kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphoric acid accumulated in the plants increased as the concentration level of dried swine excrement got higher. The seed germination and plant growth rates were best at 0.25% treatment of dried swine excrement. The treatment of dried swine excrement may bring high effects on increasing the plant growth rate but could damage the plants with higher concentration than they need. Different optimal concentration levels of dried swine excrement for different plants should be found before it is used as fertilizer.
Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by infection with Fusarium graminearum leads to enormous losses to crop growers, and may contaminate grains with a number of Fusarium mycotoxins that pose serious risks to human and animal health. Antagonistic bacteria that are used to prevent FHB offer attractive alternatives or supplements to synthetic fungicides for controlling FHB without the negative effects of chemical management. Out of 500 bacterial strains isolated from soil, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 showed strong antifungal activity and was considered a potential source for control strategies to reduce FHB. B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 produces several cyclic lipopeptides (CLPs) including iturin A, fengycin, and surfactin. Iturin A inhibits spore germination of F. graminearum. Fengycin or surfactin alone did not display any inhibitory activity against spore germination at concentrations less than 30 ug/ml, but a mixture of iturin A, fengycin, and surfactin showed a remarkable synergistic inhibitory effect on F. graminearum spore germination. The fermentation broth and formulation of B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 strain reduced the disease incidence of FHB in wheat. Furthermore, co-application of B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 and chemical fungicides resulted in synergistic in vitro antifungal effects and significant disease control efficacy against FHB under greenhouse and field conditions, suggesting that B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 has a strong chemosensitizing effect. The synergistic antifungal effect of B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 and chemical fungicides in combination may result from the cell wall damage and altered cell membrane permeability in the phytopathogenic fungi caused by the CLP mixtures and subsequent increased sensitivity of F. graminearum to fungicides. In addition, B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 showed the potential to reduce trichothecenes mycotoxin production. The results of this study indicate that B. amyloliquefaciens JCK-12 could be used as an available biocontrol agent or as a chemosensitizer to chemical fungicides for controlling FHB disease and as a strategy for preventing the contamination of harvested crops with mycotoxins.
Pink Rot on melon and White Stain Symptom on grape are caused by Trichothecium roseum, one of the most important diseases of grape and melon. These diseases have been occurred in national-wide in Korea and causes irreversible damage on the grape and the melon at harvest season. This research presents the evaluation of the capacity of Bacillus subtillis HK2 to protect both melon and grape against T. reseum and establishes its role as a biocontrol agent. In this study, we isolated a Bacillus strain HK2 from rhizosphere soil, identified it as Bacillus subtillis by 16S rRNA analysis and demonstrated its antifungal activity against T. roseum. Under I-plate assay it was observed that the effect of hyphal growth inhibition was not due to production of volatile compounds. The optimum culture condition of HK2 was found at 30℃ and initial pH of 7.0. Application of HK2 culture suspension reduced 90.2% of white stain symptom on grape as compared to control, resulting in greater protection to grape against T. roseum infestation. Butanol extract of HK2 culture purified using flash column chromatography. The antifungal material was a polar substance as it showed antifungal activity in polar elute. Therefore, our results indicated a clear potential of B. subtilis HK2 to be used for biocontrol of Pink rot in melon and white stain symptom on grape caused by T. roseum.
The amount of $CO_2$-silicate bonded waste foundry sand(WFS) occurred in Korea is over 800,000 ton per year. WFS, as a by-product, is generated through manufacturing process of foundry may affect our environmental contamination, The reason is that WFS has been buried itself not less than 90% out of total WFS. So, it can give damage on the ground of contamination in soil and underwater. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the method recycling WFS because of being intensified waste management law. In this study, we performed the research with respect to harmful component analysis, the qualities of WFS mortar and concrete mixed with WFS. As the results the specific gravity of WFS is the same as that of natural aggregate while unit weight and percentage of solids of WFS are smaller than those of it. But it is found that WFS can be used by substituting WFS for natural aggregate after control of poor grade of WFS. The flowability of mortar and concrete with WFS is inferior to those of natural aggregate, and the setting time of concrete with WFS is faster than that with only natural aggregate, On the contrary, the bleeding of concrete with WFS is shown good result, and compressive and tensile strength of concrete substituted WFS for 30% are higher than those with only natural aggregate regardless of elapsed time.
It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to acid and sulfate environments such as sewer, sewage and wastewater, soil, groundwater, and seawater etc. show significant decrease in their durability due to chemical attack. Such deleterious acid and sulfate attacks lead to expansion and cracking in concrete, and thus, eventually result in damage to concrete matrix by forming expansive hydration products due to the reaction between portland cement hydration products and acid and sulfate ions. Objectives of this experimental research are to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures on the resistance to acid and sulfate attack in concrete and to suggest high-resistance concrete mix against acid and sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes specimens with three types of cement (ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC) composed of different types and proportions of admixtures) were prepared at water-biner ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in fresh water, 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium sulfate, and 10% magnesium sulfate solutions for 28, 56, 91, 182, and 365 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to acid and sulfate for concrete specimens, visual appearance changes were observed and compressive strength ratios and mass change ratios were measured. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate solutions of the concretes containing mineral admixtures were much better than that of OPC concrete, but in the case of magnesium sulfate solution the concretes containing mineral admixtures was less resistant than OPC concrete due to formation of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) which is non-cementitious.
