The Compaction effect is important for evaluating the subgrade construction. However, there is little research exploring the compaction quality of deep soil using hydraulic compaction. According to reinforcement effect analysis, dimensional analysis is adopted in this work to analyze subgrade compactness within the effective reinforcement depth, and a prediction model is obtained. A hydraulic compactor is then employed to carry out an in-situ reinforcement test on gravel soil subgrade, and the subgrade parameters before and after reinforcement are analyzed. Results show that a reinforcement difference exists inside the subgrade, and the effective reinforcement depth is defined as increasing compactness to 90% in the depth direction. Layered compactness within the effective reinforcement depth is expressed by parameters including the drop distance of the rammer, peak acceleration, tamping times, subgrade settlement, and properties of rammer and filler. Finally, a field test is conducted to verify the results.
The effects of bank crest width, slope steepness, soil properties, and soil compactness on the characteristics of levee breach due to overlfow were investigated through a series of experiments. Generally, the major factors influencing the breach phenomenon are compactness, soil properties. crest width, and slope steepness, in that order. Using proper soil, and ensuring enough compactness in bank construction are very essential for extending breach duration and reducing peak overflow ranges for the values of breach duration, breach width, width-to-depth ratio, and side slope of the breach section, proposed by Singh, MacDonald and Fread based on the field data for earth dam breaks were reasonable. We found that those criteria could also be applied to the phenomenon of levee breaching.
This study aims to provide basic data for soil packaging differing in accordance with the strength characteristics of mixed soil, using E.S.B. (Eco Soil Binder), an eco-friendly hardening agent, based on the type of soil. The soil used in this study is weathered granite soil readily collected in and around Korea, and is classified into SW, SP and SC according to soil classification systems. The test piece for the unconfined compressive strength test has dimensions of 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, with the mix ratio of E.S.B. proportional to the weight of mixed soil changed from 5% to 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, where compactness of 90% and 100% were applied according to each condition to analyze the unconfined compressive strength characteristics at material ages of 3, 7, and 28 days. Also, the ratio of soil packaging standard strength and unconfined compressive strength was calculated to determine the optimal E.S.B. mix ratio, whereby the field applicability of the unconfined compressive strength using the estimation equation of ACI209R was evaluated.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
Achievements in the real-time soil spectro-photometer are: an improved soil penetrator to ensure a uniform soil surface under high speed conditions, real-time collecting of underground soil reflectance, getting underground soil color images, use of a RTK-GPS, and all units are arranged for compactness. With the soil spectrophotometer, field experiments were conducted in a 0.5 ha paddy field. With the original reflectance, averaging and multiple scatter correction, Kubelka-Munk (KM) transformation as soil absorption, its 1st and 2nd derivatives were calculated. When the spectra was highly correlated with the soil parameters, stepwise regression analysis was conducted. Results include the best prediction models for moisture, soil organic matter (SOM), nitrate nitrogen (NO$_3$-N), pH and electric conductivity (EC), and soil maps obtained by block kriging analysis.

Morden electronic equipments are becoming very important in information oriented society, but they are vulnerable to lightning surges. Soil resistivity in the vicinity of grounding electrodes my be affected by the current flowing from the grounding electrodes into the surrounding soil. Electrical conduction in soils depends on the grain size, compactness, and variability of the grain sizes. When a high current is injected into the soil, and the breakdown phenomenon occur. In the present work, Electrical behaviors related to discharge in soils were investigated. The breakdown voltages in soil were lower than that sparkover voltage in air. The breakdown voltage in the gravel layer is relatively low, and the breakdown was caused by the flashover through the surface of gravels
Electrical conduction in soils depends on the grain site, compactness, humidity and etc. When a high current is injected into the soil, and the breakdown phenomenon occurs and electrical behaviors in the vicinity of grounding electrodes may be changed. In the present work, electrical behaviors in the vicinity of ground rod due to the injection of impulse current were investigated. Spark-over phenomena at the tip of ground rod depend on the grain size and kinds of soils.
The study was carried out in two different forest types viz., Banj oak and Chir pine forests to assess the variation in forest species composition and soil properties along altitudinal gradients in the Garhwal Himalayas. The results of the study showed that between the forests soil moisture was higher in Banj oak forest because of closed canopy and dense forest compared to Chir pine forest. The sand particles were reported higher in Banj oak forest which might be due to the addition of organic matter favouring coarse structure of soil, helping in holding maximum water in soils. However in the Chir pine forest low amount of soil organic matter and presence of clayey soil, develops soil compactness which reduces the penetration of water resulting in high soil bulk density. The higher accumulation of litter and presence of moisture in Banj oak forest favours higher nutrient level of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compared to Chir pine forest. The soil organic carbon also reduced with increasing altitude at both gradients. While bulk density has reverse trend with soil organic carbon in both the forests at different peaks of same region. In Banj oak forest, the highest density and total basal cover was reported 1,100 tree $ha^{-1}$ and 58.86 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. However, the highest values of density and total basal cover of Chir pine forest was 560 tree$ha^{-1}$ and 56.94 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. The total density and basal cover of both the forests reduced with increasing altitude. The study concludes that Banj oak forest has better nutrient cycling ability, well developed foest floor and has a greater protective and productive features compared to the Chir pine forest which is without lower vegetation cover and having only pine litter accumulation which does not allow any other species to grow.
Diameter growth was surveyed for 22 years-old pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) growing on the forest land (site protected from artificial damage) and the resting place (site open for the recreation) of the Children Park, Seoul, Korea on September 28, 1975. The purpose of the survey was to find out difference in the tree growth between the two sites, and possible causes of the difference. Both the resting place and the forest land have deep fertile sandy-loam soil, moderate slope for south-west. The resting place, however, has much higher soil compactness by treading than the forest land. Before May 5, 1973, the opening date of the park, the trees on the resting place had higher diameter growth than those on the forest land as measured with increament borer. After the Park opening the trees on the resting place showed less growth than those on the forest land. In 1975, the growth on the resting place was less than that of the forest land by 6.5% at 1% significant level. The difference in growth was attributed to the soil compactness of the resting place by treading. The necessity for the same kind of study with other species for the tree management of parks was suggested.
