Chemical composition, morphological properties and papermaking properties of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai were investigated in order to use it comprehensively. The lignin contents of stalks and leaves were 18.8% and 15.3% and the holocellulose contents were 63.3% and 48.6% respectively. The contents of ash and the amount of water extract showed the higher value than those of wood or other bamboo species. The average fibers length and width of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai were 780 ${\mu}m$ and 14.8 ${\mu}m$. The fibers of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai stalk had thinner width and more slender structure than those of softwood. The handsheet made of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai alkaline pulp showed higher in tensile strength and bulkier structure than those of handsheet made of soft wood unbleached kraft pulp.
In this study, the effects of cationic fatty acid bulky promotor on the properties of BCTMP (bleached chemithermomechnical pulp) handsheet including bulk and strength were elucidated. As results, it was observed that the bulk of BCTMP handsheet increased with the increases of the concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent, while mechanical properties such as tensile strength and burst strength decreased. The opacity of BCTMP handsheet also increased with the increases of the concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent, while brightness was almost not changed. The effectiveness of bulky agent with SwBCTMP (softwood) was higher than that with HwBCTMP (hardwood). Compared with previous research on the effect of bulky agent on BKP handsheet, the bulk increase of BCTMP handsheet was greater compared to that of BKP handsheet. However, the reduction of mechanical property in BCTMP handsheet was lower than that of BKP handsheet.
The capability of higher ascomyceteous fungi to cause typical soft-rot decay for wood under laboratory conditions is reviewed and discussed. Fungi tested were extremely active in the decomposition of timbers. Scanning electron micrographs illustrated typical soft-rot decay pattern of higher wood decay ascomycetes, with the exception of H. trugodes that caused white-rot decay. Most of the fungi tested could be grouped as soft-rot fungi that showed typical soft-rot type II. Hypha confined primarily to the resin canals in softwoods or vessel elements in hardwoods and spread tracheid to tracheid via pits of cell wall to cell wall with mechanical force.
Tritium has been used to directly measure the exchangeable hydrogen in bleached softwood kraft pulp. The hydrogen atoms associated with hydroxyl groups in pulp or with water contained in the pulp can dissociate and exchange with the hydrogen atoms in bulk water. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen and behaves almost identically to it. The distribution of tritium between pulp and water ($k_{pw}$) can be easily measured and becomes an index of the protons available fur hydrogen bonding. Bleached kraft pulp was refined in a PFI mill to a range of freenesses. Tritiated water was added and the amount exchanged measured. There was a slight steady increase in $k_{pw}$ until approximately 300 CSF; $k_{pw}$ then rose sharply between 300 CSF and 100 CSF. This rise appears to correlate with FSP. It is likely that the action of refining on the fiber reaches a threshold at about 300 CSF causing the fiber surface to break open creating exponentially more surface area. This theory is visually confirmed through light microscopy. The slow increase in fibrillation of the fibers above 300 CSF correlates with the increase in $k_{pw}$. Beyond the threshold of 300 CSF a dramatic difference in fibrillation is shown, also corresponding with the large increase in $k_{pw}$. The freeness difference around 300 CSF is small, but the change in fiber properties is extreme within this region. This change in properties could lead to sheet breaks and other disruptions when producing products around the threshold. This study leads to a better understanding of how fiber changes during refining, resulting in a practical benefit of target freeness determination. Presently, freeness is selected based on product quality and on some measure of runnability. Yet, there are other considerations, demonstrated by the extreme change in fiber properties around 300 CSF.

Pulp refining is the major way to alter the properties of fibers and formed paper. Different combinations of the bar profile of the rotor and stator during low consistency refining processes directly affect the properties of the paper. In this study, a mixture of softwood and hardwood pulp was refined by varying the bar angle of the stator while that of the rotor is fixed at 0º. The pulp samples were collected at different refining times. Then, the pulp and paper properties, such as beating degree, fiber external fibrillation, and tensile and tear indexes were measured to explore the effects of the combined refining plates at different bar angles on paper properties. The results of the experiment show that the combined refining plate of 0º and 5º recorded the most significant improvement in the pulp beating degree and fiber external fibrillation. This consequently increased the fiber bonding area, which in turn, improved both the tensile and the tear indexes of the paper. Also, the influence of the combined refining plates with a larger bar angle on the paper properties was weaker compared to that of smaller angles. This study not only provides ideas for the bar profile design but also improves the optimal selection of refining plates.
Structures and strengths of paper have been studied by analyzing fibers characteristics depending on refining methods. Mixing ratio of softwood and hardwood fibers and fibers characteristics have been analyzed for paper quality improvement. In this study flocculation and drainage of fibers were analyzed to improve the production efficiency and paper product's quality. Floc size and drainage rate depending on stock consistency and fines content were analyzed. Total amount of drainage during drainage process was measured quantitatively by using DI(drainage index). Floc size, viscosity of floc and dewatering times were also measured. In the case of refining load $2.8 kg_f$ , drainage was occurred by filtration mechanism rather than thickening mechanism because drainage resistance increased by fibrillation of fibers. Therefore, the drainage rate of $2.8 kg_f$ refining load stock was slower than that of $5.6 kg_f$.
Fiber identification was attempted for the early twenty century documents that were classified as national archives in Korea, as an initial step for establishing scientific preservation and restoration method. Fiber staining with C stain and a digital microscope were used for the observation. All the documents observed consisted of mostly softwood fibers from fir (Abies) and other minor supplementary fibers, and they were all deteriorated seriously by various damages and aging process. It seemed that at around 1914-1934, fir was used frequently as papermaking raw material.
In woody waste separated from municipal solid waste, medium density fiberboard was major contributors with particleboard, paper, plywood and log, with different composition based on collected period. In chemical compositional analysis of woody waste, it was similar to softwood based on carbohydrate composition analysis. Based on the carbohydrate composition, saccharified solution from MWW could be good resource for biorefinery.
Structure and strengths of paper have been studied by analyzing fibers characteristics depending on refining methods. In those studies stock preparation aspect of softwood and hardwood fibers mixing and fibers characteristics was focused for paper quality improvement. In this study drainage of fibers were analyzed to improve the production efficiency and paper product's quality. Fiber properties by one and two-step refining processes were compared. By applying two-step refining processes($2.8kg_f$ and $5.6kg_f$ of refining load), refining efficiency, drainage, and strengths could be improved at specific extent of refining.
Hemicelluloses pre-extracted from Korean mixed wood chip were investigated as a wet-end additive. Hemicelluloses dissolved in hot water and alkali solution were isolated by ethyl alcohol precipitation from pre-extractives. They showed molecular weight of 9,000 ~ 27,000 g/mol as revealed by size exclusion chromatography. The reduction of molecular weight through hot water extraction was caused by autohydrolysis. Chemical composition of the hemicelluloses were analyzed with high-performance liquid chromatography and UV-Vis spectroscopy. As the surface charge of isolated hemicelluloses were negative, the adsorption of hemicelluloses onto softwood unbleached kraft pulp fiber was promoted by poly-DADMAC. The physical properties of handsheets increased as the molecular weight of hemicellulose increased. On the other hands, the optical property decreased with hemicellulose adsorption.
