  • CGS(Compaction Grouting System) is widely used in reinforcement of structural foundation and ground improvement in soft ground. But the effects of ground improvement depending on the type of soil must be studied in order to adopt in various soils (granular soil and cohesive soil). In this study, characteristics of ground improvement (the increase of N value, increase in unit weight, vertical displacement on the ground surface) by CGS method was compared through two cases that were performed in granular and cohesive soil. The results show that the closer to the grout hole, the more increase in N value and this trend appear distinctly in granular soil. Unit weight of ground increase largely near by the grout hole and decrease in far from it independently of the soil type. The vertical displacement on the ground surface appeared in smaller area in case of granular soil than cohesive soil.

  • Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.

  • The practical usage of underground space and demand for vehicular tunnels necessitate the construction of non-circular wide rectangular tunnels. However, constructing large tunnels in soft clayey soil conditions with no ground improvement can lead to excessive ground deformations and collapse. In recent years, in situ ground improvement techniques such as jet grouting and deep cement mixing are often utilized to perform cement-stabilisation around the tunnel boundary to prevent large deformations and failure. This paper discusses the stability characteristics and failure behaviour of a wide rectangular tunnel in cement-treated soft clays. First, the plane strain finite element model is developed and validated with the results of centrifuge model tests available in the past literature. The critical tunnel support pressures computed from the numerical study are found to be in good agreement with those of centrifuge model tests. The influence of varying strength and thickness of improved soil surround, and cover depth are studied on the stability and failure modes of a rectangular tunnel. It is observed that the failure behaviour of the tunnel in improved soil surround depends on the ratio of the strength of improved soil surround to the strength of surrounding soil, i.e., qui/qus, rather than just qui. For low qui/qus ratios, the stability increases with the cover; however, for the high strength improved soil surrounds with qui >> qus, the stability decreases with the cover. The failure chart, modified stability equation, and stability chart are also proposed as preliminary design guidelines for constructing rectangular tunnels in the improved soil surrounded by soft clays.

  • A comprehensive study was conducted to design economical foundations for a number of buildings on soft cohesive soil in the southern coastal regions of Iran. Both static and seismic loads were considered in the design process. Cyclic experiments indicated that the cohesive soil of the area has potential for softening. Consequently, the major challenge in the design stages was relatively high dimensions of settlement, under both static and seismic loadings. Routine soil-improvement methods were too costly for the vast area of the project. After detailed numerical modeling of different scenarios, we concluded that, in following a performance-based design approach and applying a special time schedule of construction, most of the settlement would dissipate during the construction of the buildings. Making the foundation as rigid as possible was another way to prevent any probable differential settlement. Stiff subgrade of stone and lime mortar under the grid foundation and a reinforced concrete slab on the foundation were considered as appropriate to this effect. In favor of an economical design, in case the design earthquake strikes the site, the estimations indicate no collapse of the buildings even if considerable uniform settlements may occur. This is a considerable alternative design to costly soil-improvement methods.

  • When highly compressible, clayey soil layers lies at a limited depth and large consolidtion settlements are expected as the result of construction, precompression of soil may be used to minimize postconstruction settlement. In this study, we tried to find the possibility about the effect of ground improvement using flat dilatometer at the Inchon International Airport where preloading was installed. Field and laboratory tests were performed for soft ground before and after preloading in order to check the effectiveness of the soft ground improvement and compared with the test results of dilatometer which obtained before and after preloading at the same location Field tests such as flat dilatometer, vane, CPTu tests were performed before and after preloading and undisturbed samples are obtained to carry out laboratory tests. As comparing results, after preloading, unit weight, effective stress, undrained shear strength were increased and we can also check the decrease of consolidation late caused of decrease of void ratio. Furthermore, it is assumed that the possibility on the effect of ground improvement by using the flat dilatometer

  • The present paper illustrates the outcome of the monitoring of the consolidation behavior of a soft foundation soil under a large submerged sand embankment. Measurements of settlements and excess pore water pressures showed a good agreement with predictions evaluated using the large strain consolidation theory. Soft soil improvement by means of deep mixing has been optimized. Moreover, the principles and developments of underwater geosynthetics applications are discussed.

  • This study is an experiment paper about the ground improvement material which using the waste residual(slag and paper fly ash) by fire. we are research to concern according to the soil to mix the ground improvement material at show strength effectiveness. Also, we can expect a long time strength increase effectiveness as reduce the dryness contraction. They are distinguished to the clay of the reclamation ground and silty sand soil. We examined around an uniaxial compress test and scanning electron microscopy. The uniaxial stress increases according to the increase of the mixed ratio of ground improvement material and the water contents have been reduced the strength value. A clay's improvement effectiveness is big but in the silty sand soil to express small effectiveness. A ground improvement material mixing of the quantity to write can not expect the effect of Ettringite.

  • Technological innovations in sustainable materials for soil improvement have attracted considerable interest due to energy crisis and environmental concerns in recent years. This study presents results of a comprehensive investigation on utilization of nanocarbons in reinforcement of a residual soil mixed with 0, 10 and 20% bentonite. Effects of adding proportionate quantities (0, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1 and 0.2%) of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers to soil samples of different plasticities were evaluated. The investigation revealed that the inclusion of nanocarbons into the soil samples significantly improved unconfined compressive strength, Young's modulus and indirect tensile strength. It was observed that carbon nanofibers showed better performance as compared to carbon nanotubes. The nanosized diameter and high aspect ratio of nanocarbons make it possible to distribute the reinforcing materials on a much smaller scale and bridge the inter-particles voids. As a result, a better 'soil-reinforcing material' interaction is achieved and desired properties of the soil are improved at nanolevel.
