  • In this paper, we propose a method to obtain a linear characteristic using soft computing for systems which have array sensors of nonlinear characteristics. Also a procedure utilizing the pattern information of array sensors without additional sensors is proposed to reduce disturbance effects. For a typical example, even a single CdS cell for CdS array has nonlinear characteristics. Overall linear characteristic for CdS array is obtained using fuzzy logic for each cell and overlapped portion. In addition, further improvement for linearization is obtained applying genetic algorithms for the parameters of membership functions. Also the effect of disturbing external light changes to the CdS array can be reduced without using any additional sensors for calibration. The proposed method based on fuzzy logic shows improvements for position measurements and disturbance reduction to external light changes due to the fuzziness of the shadow boundary as well as the inherent nonlinearity of the CdS array. This improvement is shown by applying the proposed method to the ball position measurements of a magnetic levitation system.

  • The purpose of this study is prove the effectiveness of an energy subtraction image for the detection of pulmonary nodules and the effectiveness of multi-resolutional filter on an energy subtraction image to detect pulmonary nodules. Also we study influential factors to the accuracy of detection of pulmonary nodules from viewpoints of types of images, types of digital filters and types of evaluation methods. As one type of images, we select an energy subtraction image, which removes bones such as ribs from the conventional X-ray image by utilizing the difference of X-ray absorption ratios at different energy between bones and soft tissue. Here we select two evaluation methods and make clear the effectiveness of multi-resolutional filter on an energy subtraction image.

  • Luis Barragan is a representative Mexican architect. He designed architectural space as a local architect in consideration of the Mexico's harsh Mediterranean climate. His manifestation of the regionality can be found mainly in his precise expression of light. Such method and concept of using light in Barragan's architecture made a huge impact on later architects but detailed studies on this issue have not been made actively. Hence, this paper intended to suggest a starting point or an orientation by illustrating the characteristics of using and expressing light in architecture through his cases of housing works. The study method was as follows. First, the general characteristics of light were identified by analyzing the elements of architectural space that dealt with light and the characteristics of expressing light shown in the architectural space. Second, the architectural background of Luis Barragan and the architectural space elements of the light expressed in his architectural space were extracted to form a hypothetical ground. Third, five of his works on the houses in his prime (after the year of 1945) were analyzed to explore the characteristics of relational representation between light and the architectural space elements in his architecture. Through this process, it was learned that, in his architectural works, light was the embodiment of the location-related, time-based, daily and illusionary experience into architecture. In addition, meditative light could be experienced by contrasting the soft and dispersed light and shadow of the inside space of Barragan's houses with the strong external light. Therefore, through the process above, this study is hoped to provide an opportunity for the contemporary architects of our era to rethink the fundamental correlation between architecture and light.

  • Calcifying fibrous tumors (CFTs) are unusual benign tumors of childhood, located primarily in soft tissues, pleura, and peritoneum. The cause and pathogenesis are unclear. We report a rare case of a CFT in a 2-year-old boy who presented with vomiting and abdominal distension. An abdominal X-ray showed an elliptical, calcific shadow in the LUQ area mimicking a foreign body. An internally protruding mass along the lesser curvature of the gastric body was an incidental finding during upper endoscopy, biopsies of which were negative. Abdominal CT showed a 4.5${\times}$3.2 cm soft tissue mass of the gastric wall with calcifications. A diagnosis of gastric submucosal mass was suspected and a wedge resection of the stomach was performed. On microscopic examination, the tumor was composed of whorls of dense hyalinized collagen bundles with a few fibroblasts. There were also amorphous dystrophic calcifications and nodular aggregates of mononuclear inflammatory cells. Immunohistochemically, spindle cells did not stain for anaplastic lymphoma kinase-1 (ALK-1), CK, smooth muscle actin (SMA), or desmin. Taken together, the mass was compatible with a CFT of the gastric wall. This is the first reported case of CFT in a Korean child.

  • Subcutaneous foreign body causes recurrent problems such as chronic soft tissue swelling and discharge. Wooden foreign body is one of the most common foreign bodies found in subcutaneous region including face, interdigit, and thoracic or abdominal area. This report demonstrated three dogs with wooden foreign body located in subcutaneous region of thoracic wall, abdominal wall and upper eyelid, respectively. Three dogs showed prominent soft tissue swelling adjacent the foreign body. A sinus or drainage tract was developed in two of these dogs. Ultrasonography revealed that hyperechoic linear structure accompanied acoustic shadow in all dogs, and which was diagnosed as a subcutaneous foreign body. Anechoic or hyperechoic fluid and hypoechoic tissue circumscribed the foreign body. A subcutaneous foreign body in case 3 was removed by clamp under ultrasound-guide with sedation. Sinography was performed in case 1 and clarified that the wooden foreign body did not perforate the thoracic wall and there was no direct communication into thoracic cavity. Ultrasonography and sinography can be used to identify the subcutaneous foreign body and evaluate the inflammatory reaction and relationship between foreign body and adjacent structures.

  • A 33 year old male patient was admitted with 20 years history of recurrent hemoptysis. On clinical examination, mild left chest discomfortness and foul odored sputum with occasional rusty hemoptysis were principal complaints noted. Chest X-ray film revealed moderately advanced active tuberculosis lesion on both upper lung fields, and hen-egg sized mass surrounded with linear crescent of air shadow in a cavity on his left upper lung field. On left thoracotomy, dense pleural adhesions on left apicoposterior segmental surface with multiple lymphnode enlargements were noted, and the soft encapsulated mass of $5{\times}5{\times}8cm$ was localized in the apicoposterior segment of the left upper lobe. Apicoposterior segment with anterior segment of the left upper lobe was resected. Cavity was opened to find a rusty grayish colored, fragile mass, which was confirmed as "fungus ball" of aspergillosis by histological section slide with Gomori staining. The authors report one case of pulmonary aspergilloma superinfected with previous long standing pulmonary tbc.

  • The anomalous systemic arterial supply to the lung without sequestration is an uncommon congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of a part of lung tissue which supplied by an aberrant artery from the aorta or its branch and normal communication with the normal bronchial tree, and it was reported by Huber in 1777 first. It differs from bronchopulmonary sequestration in having normal bronchial communication from the remainder lung and normal lung histology. We experienced a case of anomalous systemic arterial supply to the lung without sequestration, which was confirmed preoperatively. The patient was 16 year old male and came to us with complaints of mild fever and profuse sputum with coughing. Chest film showed a ring-like soft tissue shadow in Rt. middle lung field. Aortogram revealed an aberrant artery originated from abdominal aorta at 12th thoracic vertebral level and supplying a part of Rt. lower lobe of lung. At. the time of operation, an aberrant systemic artery which originated from the abdominal aorta supplying the Rt. lower lobe was noted, and the bronchial communications were normal. After division and ligation of the aberrant artery, Rt. lower lobectomy was performed The postoperative courses were uneventful and the patient was discharged with good condition.

  • The characteristics of light in the paintings of Rembrandt van Rijn, Johaness Vermeer and Edward Hopper are very different. While Rembrandt and Vermeer lived in the 17th century, Hopper lived in the 20th century. Although this time gap, comparative study on their light-space relationship is important because there are spatial similarities as well as light differences. Most three painters' works depict interior spaces with one person inside. The interior space is filled with different light and shadow. In the Rembrandt's paintings, only part of the figure is lit in the ambiguous darkness. In the Vermeer's paintings, the soft indirect light is filled in the domestic space and the boundary between the figure and space is blurred. In the Hopper's paintings, the direct sunlight invades the interior and the figure confronts with strong daylight. These light differences were caused by the artists' intentions as well as the environmental situations. 4 case paintings of each artist were analyzed by phenomenological aspects and computerized light brightness test. Scale models were built to re-construct the three different light characteristics. The model experimentation will have potential to develop 2 dimensional art analysis into 3 dimensional space design by means of light. However it was very difficult to construct the three lights, the experimentation shows they have unique characteristics that can be applied to spatial design studies.

  • This report presents the case of a 49-year-old man who presented with giant masses that had recently grown on the bilateral sides of the tongue. A clinical examination revealed rubbery yellowish lesions protruding from the tongue. A panoramic radiograph showed an enlarged soft tissue shadow of the tongue. Computed tomography showed well-defined circumscribed mass exhibiting a homogeneous low density on the bilateral sides of the tongue. On magnetic resonance images, the masses showed a high signal intensity on T1-weighted images and iso-signal intensity with partially hyperintense margin on fat-suppressed T2-weighted images. Surgical excision was performed, and a histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of lipoma. The patient recovered well with no sign of recurrence. A giant lipoma is defined as a lipoma larger than 5 cm in diameter. A literature review of giant lipomas of the tongue is also presented herein.

  • Purpose: This article was to study the optical and surface properties of soft contact lenses (SCL) exposed to eye make-ups. Methods: Rates of the light transmission of etafilcon A (HEMA based hydrogel lens) and lotrafilcon B (silicone based hydrogel lens) exposed to four different cosmetics over time were investigated. After cleansed with multi-purpose solution (MPS), rates of the light transmission and surface change of lens that were exposed to the cosmetics for 7 consecutive days were analyzed. Results: Visible light transmissions of all lenses exposed to cosmetics decreased to 93.35% (HEMA based hydrogel lens) and 90% (silicone based hydrogel lens) compared with those of the fresh SCLs, such as 97.8% and 96.4%, respectively. It was found that cosmetic residues from powder eye shadow and mascara attached to the lenses were not removed completely when cleansed with MPS. Especially with silicone based hydrogel lens, we found a decrease in visible light transmission of the lens and noticeable particles on lens surface imaged by SEM. Conclusions: Depending on types of eye make-ups and contact lens materials, make-ups were not completely eliminated with current cleansing methods and that caused a decrease in optical property and a change in surface property of the lenses.
