  • Synthesis of composite powders for the Fe2O3-Zn system by mechanical alloying (MA) has been investigated at room temperature. Optimal milling and heat treatment conditions to obtain soft magnetic composite with fine microstructure were investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement. It is found that α-Fe/ZnO composite powders in which ZnO is dispersed in α-Fe matrix can be obtained by MA of Fe2O3 with Zn for 4 hours. The change in magnetization and coercivity also reflects the details of the solid-state reduction process of hematite by pure metal of Zn during MA. Densification of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine at 900 ~ 1,000 ℃ under 60 MPa. Shrinkage change after SPS of sample MA'ed for 5 hrs was significant above 300 ℃ and gradually increased with increasing temperature up to 800 ℃. X-ray diffraction results show that the average grain size of α-Fe in the α-Fe/ZnO composite sintered at 900 ℃ is in the range of 110 nm.

  • A review of mechanical sensing techniques based on magnetic methods is presented, with special reference to magnetoelastic strain gauges and force sensors. A novel strain sensor based on soft amorphous ribbons is described. Other types of magnetic sensors, for the measurement of torque and displacement are briefly discussed. An overview of magnetic actuators based on giant magnetostrictive materials, with some practical examples, is presented. Recent advances in the development and application of magnetic shape memory materials are discussed, together with the analysis of recent studies for the description of magnetic shape memory phenomena.

  • In this study, A set-up for measuring a initial permeability of soft-ferrite powder was developed with a differential transformer coil. To measure a initial permeability of magnetic powder is cumbersome since there are not any measuring equipment and method. A magnetic powder is currently used for a magnetic fluid and microwave absorber materials, and the initial permeability of the magnetic powders is very important to be evaluated a powder for some applications.

  • The extremely soft magnetic behaviors in the nanocrystalline $Fe_81B_11Nb_7Cu_1$ alloy annealed at 450 $\circ C$ and 550 $\circ C$ for 1 hour in a vacuum were investigated by means of the magnetoimpedance (MI) effect and the incremental permeability. Because the MI effect can be obtained only in ultra-soft magnetic materials, the improvement of magnetic softness by proper thermal treatment was carefully monitored by the MI effect for all annealed samples. The changes of the incremental permeability as a function of an external field were also measured to verify the magnetic softness along with the MI measurement.

  • The microstructure, the crystallization behavior, and magnetic properties of FeSi-based soft magnetic alloys (FINEMET) were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and coercive force measurements. The amorphous $Fe_{73.28}Si_{13.43}B_{8.72}Cu_{0.94}Nb_{3.63}$ alloys particles, prepared in $10^{-4}$ torr by gas atomization process, were heat treated at $530^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, and $670^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in a vacuum of $10^{-2}$ torr. Nanocrystalline Fe precipitation was first formed followed by the grain growth. Phase formation and crystallite sizes was compared linked to its magnetic behavior, which showed that excellent soft magnetic property can directly be correlated with its microstructure.

  • Nanocrystalline Fe-Sm-O thin films were prepared by RF magnetron reactive sputtering method in $Ar+O_2$mixed atmosphere with the $O_2$content of 5%. The compositions of the thin films were changed by changing the number of $Sm_2O_3$ chips. The best soft magnetic properties of the thin film with the composition of $Fe_{83.4}Sm_{3.4}O_{13.2}$ were saturation flux density of 18 kG, coercivity of 0.82 Oe and effective permeability about 2,600 at 0.5~100 MHz, respectively. The electrical resistivity of Fe-Sm-O thin films was increased with increasing the amount of Sm and O elements which combined each other, the electrical resistivity of$Fe_{83.4}Sm_{3.4}O_{13.2}$ thin film was $130{\mu}{\Omega}cm$. In case of the small amount of Sm and O elements, the microstructures of Fe-Sm-O thin films showed a precipitated phase of $Sm_2O_3$ on the ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase. With the increase of the amount of Sm and O elements, the microstructures of the Fe- Sm-O thin films were changed into a mixed structure of ${\alpha}-Fe$ crystal-phase and Sm-oxide amorphous phase. The Fe-Sm-O thin films with Fe content in the range of 72~94 at% exhibited the quality factor (Q = $\mu$′/$\mu$") of 7~75 up to 50 MHz.

  • Iron nitride alloy films prepared in the form of laminated ${(Fe_{97}Al_3)}_{85}N_{15}/Al_2O_3$ multilayers (Ml's) due to excellent soft magnetic properties and high saturation magnetization [1, 2] are very promising materials for poles and shields in ultra high density thin film heads. The present work concerns the ferromagnetic (FM) coupling effect as a function of the thickness of $Al_2O_3$ spacers by analysis of the magnetic domain structure.

  • A double rectangular spiral type inductor has been fabricated by using FeTaN films. The inductor is composed of internal coils sandwiched by magnetic layers. Characteristics of inductor performance are investigated with an emphasis on planarization of magnetic films. In the absence of the planarization process, the grating topology of the upper magnetic films over the coil arrays degrades the soft magnetic properties and the inductor performance. It also induces a longitudinal magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis aligned to the magnetic flux direction. This alignment prevents the upper magnetic films from contributing to the total induction. Glass bonding is a viable method for achieving a completely planar inductor structure. The planar inductor with glass bonding shows excellent performance: inductance of 1.1 $\mu H$, Q factor of 7 (at 5 MHz), and the current capability up to 100 mA.
