The paper deals with two bearing capacity problems of shallow footing under combined loading. The first is a FEM study of shallow strip footing on two-layer clay deposits subjected to a vertical, horizontal and moment combined loading, while the second is a centrifuge study of shallow rectangular footing on dry sand under double eccentricity. The FEM results revealed that the existence of top soft layer sensitively affects more on horizontal and moment capacity than vertical capacity for cases of footing on soft clay overlying stiff clay. Practical design charts are presented to evaluate bearing capacities of footing for various combinations of the ratio of the depth of the upper layer to the footing width and the ratio of undrained strength of the upper layer to that of the lower. The centrifuge tests indicated that current design practice of calculating failure load of rectangular surface footing under double eccentricity underestimates the centrifuge loading test data. This trend is more marked when the eccentricity becomes larger. The decreasing trend in failure load with an increase of double eccentricity is rather uniquely expressed by a single curve, using a newly defined resultant eccentricity and the diagonal length of the footing base.

Seismic analyses of a pile under a large rigid basement foundation embedded in the homogeneous soil layer were performed practically by a response displacement method assuming a sinusoidal wave form. However, it is hard to take into account the characteristics of a large mat foundation and a heterogeneous soil layer with the response displacement method. The response displacement method is relevant to the 2D problems for longitudinal structures such as tunnel, underground cave structure, etc., but might not be relevant with isolated foundations for building structures. In this study, seismic pile analysis by a pseudo 3D finite element method was carried out to compare numerical results with results of the response displacement method considering 3D characteristics of a foundation-soil system which is important for the building foundation analyses. Study results show that seismic analyses results of a response displacement method are similar to those of a pseudo 3D numerical method for stiff and dense soil layers, but they are too conservative for a soft soil layer inducing large soil pressures on the foundation wall and large pile displacements due to ignored foundation rigidity and resistance.
Preloading surcharge method along with vertical drains was adopted to improve the performance of a very soft marine clay deposit. The onshore deposit, located in the Ulsan Bay area, consists of a 2 to 10m thick, very soft, highly compressible marine clay layer developed just below. the sea water level. The initial undrained shear strength of the clay layer was about 0.6 ton/m2. But, the deposit was designed after treatment to support some auxiliary facilities for a new ilo refinery plant, requiring bearing capacities of 3.6 to 5.4 ton/m2 and maximum allowablee settlement of less than 7.5cm. A total of 35, 000 wick drains Ivas installed to expedite drainage during preloading, and surcharge loads of up to 5m above the original ground level were applied in a step-by-step loading sequence to prevent ground failure by excess surcharge loads. An extensive program of field instrumentation was implemented to monitor the behavior of the clay deposit. Measurers!ends included settlements, excess pore pressure and its dissipation, ground farmer level fluctuation, and lateral movement of the so(t clay layer under the preloads. This paper describes the design concepts, construction methods and control procedures used for improvement of the clay layer. It also presents the ground behavior measured during construction, rind comparisons with theoretical predictions.
Research was undertaken to determine if relectance (interactance) measured with a portable fiver optic probe (Colormet) can be used to assess porcine fat quality. Soft fat generally had lower interactance than hard fat, p<0.05 from 400 to 700 nm, although interactance spectra of hard and soft fat were similar in shape. At $4^{\circ}C$, interactance from 450 nm to 700 nm at the inner layer of backfat was correlated (p<0.01) with subjective soft fat score (r = 0.06 to 0.70), and with the refractive index (r = -0.62 to -0.65) and melting point (r = 0.59 to 0.60) of heat-extracted lipid. Colormet interactance $L^*$ at $4^{\circ}C$ was correlated (p<0.01) with soft fat score (r = 0.72), refractive index (r = -0.66) and melting point (r = 0.61). Interactance decreased as the temperature of the fat was increased from 22 to $44^{\circ}C$ (p<0.01). Soft fat had lower interactance than fats that were slightly soft, slightly hard and hard at 4, 22 and $40^{\circ}C$, although softness and temperature may interact to affect interactance. These results indicate that soft porcine fat may be detected easily by fiber-optic spectrophotometry.
The pullout behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles(diameter = 2,500mm, length = 38~40m), which were designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during a static compression load test on a pile(diameter = 1,000m, length = 40m), was investigated. The steel pipe piles were driven by 20m into a marine deposit and weathered soil layer and then socketed by 10m into underlying weathered and soft rock layers. The sockets and pipe were filled with reinforced concrete. The steel pipe and concrete in the steel pipe zone and concrete and rebars in the socketed zone were fully instrumented to measure strains in each zone. The pullout deformations of the reaction pile heads were measured by LVDTs. Over the course of the study, a maximum uplift deformation of 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded to 10MN, and 1mm of residual uplift deflection was measured. In the reaction piles, about 83% and about 12% of the applied pullout loads were transferred in the weathered rock layer and in the soft rock layer, respectively. Also, at an uplift force of 10MN, shear stresses due to the uplift in the weathered rock layer md soft rock layer were developed as much as 125.3kPa and 61.8kPa, respectively. Thus, the weathered rock layer should be utilized as resisting layer in which frictional farce could be mobilized greatly.

Application of structural load on soft ground can cause lateral movement as well as ground break due to pressing and shearing of ground. Especially, abutment supported by pile foundation can make pile deformed due to lateral movement of ground in order to have harmful effect on structure. According to the result of this study, it is required to consider disturbance of weak soil layer when using lateral movement countermeasure method by EPS construction method as a result of performing study on safety review and EPS construction method with respect to this based on site where lateral movement occurs due to backside soil filling load at bridge abutment installed on weak ground, and it is required to sufficiently consider soil reduction during design of EPS construction method due to lateral movement deformation of soft clay layer by losing ground horizontal resistance force due to plasticity of ground around pile as well as combination part damage with pile head and expansion foundation.
The wear between piston ring face and cylinder liner is an extremely unpredictable and hard-to-reproduce phenomenon that significantly decreases engine performance. This study will discuss characteristics of wear between hard and soft piston ring coatings with running surface of cylinder liner. Detailed tribological analysis by using Pin-on-Disk(POD) testing machine describes the lubricity mechanism between piston ring coatings and cylinder liner at different temperature with and without oil. The effect of surface roughness of the cylinder liner on the friction coefficient and wear amount of piston ring coatings will also be analyzed. To simulate scuffing mechanism between piston ring and cylinder liner, accelerated lab testing was performed. This study will provide the data from tribological testing of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. Furthermore, the microstructures and morphological features of the surface and the near-surface materials during wear will be investigated. From the scuffing test by using POD testing machine, scuffing mechanisms for the soft and hard coating will be analyzed and experimentally confirmed.

We investigated accelerated soft error rate(ASER) in 8M static random access memory(SRAM) cells. The effects on ASER by well structure, operational voltage, and cell transistor threshold voltage are examined. The ASER decreased exponentially with respect to operational voltage. The chips with buried nwell1 layer showed lower ASER than those either with normal well structure or with buried nwell1 + buried pwell structure. The ASER decreased as the ion implantation energy onto buried nwell1 changed from 1.5 MeV to 1.0 MeV. The lower viscosity of the capping layer also revealed lower ASER value. The decrease in the threshold voltage of driver or load transistor in SRAM cells caused the increase in the transistor on-current, resulting in lower ASER value. We confirmed that in order to obtain low ASER SRAM cells, it is necessary to also the buried nwell1 structure scheme and to fabricate the cell transistors with low threshold voltage and high on-current.

Large quantity of extra soils discharged from excavation site in Songdo area can be treated by hardening agents and utilized in surface stabilized layer overlying thick reclaimed soft soil deposit. Though surface layer stabilization method using cement or lime for very soft soils has been studied in recent years, but studies on moderately soft clayey silt has not been tried. The purpose of this research is to investigate optimum mixing condition for stabilizing Songdo marine soil with low plasiticity. The optimum mixing conditions of hardening agents with Songdo soil such as kind of agents, mixing ratio, initial water content and curing time are investigated by uniaxial compression test and laboratory vane test. The results indicate that strength increases with high mixing ratio and long curing time, while decreases drastically under certain water content before mixing. Finally, optimum mixing condition considering economic efficiency and workability with test results was proposed.
This article derived a hybrid coupling technique using the higher-order displacement polynomial and three soft computing techniques (teaching learning-based optimization, particle swarm optimization, and artificial bee colony) to predict the optimal stacking sequence of the layered structure and the corresponding frequency values. The higher-order displacement kinematics is adopted for the mathematical model derivation considering the necessary stress and stain continuity and the elimination of shear correction factor. A nine noded isoparametric Lagrangian element (eighty-one degrees of freedom at each node) is engaged for the discretisation and the desired model equation derived via the classical Hamilton's principle. Subsequently, three soft computing techniques are employed to predict the maximum natural frequency values corresponding to their optimum layer sequences via a suitable home-made computer code. The finite element convergence rate including the optimal solution stability is established through the iterative solutions. Further, the predicted optimal stacking sequence including the accuracy of the frequency values are verified with adequate comparison studies. Lastly, the derived hybrid models are explored further to by solving different numerical examples for the combined structural parameters (length to width ratio, length to thickness ratio and orthotropicity on frequency and layer-sequence) and the implicit behavior discuss in details.
