The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical quenching system for residual ozone and to determine the operating condition for the quenching system. Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and sodium thiosulfate ($Na_2S_2O_3$) were investigated as quenching reagents for ozone removal, and the tendency of each chemical was notably different. In the case of $H_2O_2$, the degradation rate of ozone was increased as the concentration of $H_2O_2$ increase, and temperature and pH value have a significant effect on the degradation rate of ozone. On the other hand, the degradation rate of ozone was not affected by the concentration of $Na_2S_2O_3$, temperature and pH value, due to the high reactivity between the ${S_2O_3}^{2-}$ and ozone. This study evaluates the decomposition mechanism of ozone by $H_2O_2$ and $Na_2S_2O_3$ with consideration for the water quality and reaction time. Furthermore, the removal test for the quenching reagents, which can be remained after reaction with ozone, was conducted by GAC process.
Meanwhile Pityrosporum species as well as Candida species in yeast phase are not pathogenic, Pityrosporum in mycelial phase is pathogenic. Pityrosporum species can be isolated not only from tinea versicolor patients but also from ninety (90) percent of healthy persons. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ketoconazole against Pityrosporum spp. was 0.05~0.8$\mu\textrm{g}$ ml$^{-1}$and the MIC of ketoconazole was the lowest. Of itraconazole, selenium sulfide, sodium thiosulfate and ketoconazole had the lowest MIC against P. orbiculare. The P. orbiculare strains isolated from healthy persons were inhibited by lower MIC than those isolated from tinea versicolor patients. P. ovale strains were inhibited by lower MIC at MIC$_{50}$ and MIC$_{90}$ of oral and topical antifungal agents than p. orbiculare.

A sulfer-oxidizing bacterium was isolated from mine wastewater and characterized. The isolate was gra-negative, rod (0.2 * 1.2-1.5.mu.m), nonmotiloe, catalase positive, and oxidase prositive. The opotimal pH and temperature for growth were 7.0 and 30.deg.C. respectively. The optimum thiosulfate concentration was 70 mM and the maximum growth rate was 0.081 hr. The major ubiquinone contained in the isolate was Q-8. The cellular fatty acid composition was $C_{16 : 0}$, $C_{18 : 1}$, $C_{17cyc}$,and $C_{19cyc}$ as nonpolar fatty acids, and 3-OH C10 : 0 and 3-OH $C_{12 : 0}$ as hydroxylated fatty acids. The isolate was a facultative chemolithoautotroph which can grow autotrophically on sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfide and which can grow heterotrophically on yeast extract. It can also grow mixotrophically on sodium thiosulfate and yeast extract. Comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate with that of Thiobacillus species and Paracoccus thiocyanatus revealed that it is closely related to T. caldus which belongs to the .betha.-subclass of the class Proteobacteria. However, the isolated could not grow at extremely low pH (pH 1-3.5). On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, the isolate was tentatively named Thiobacillus sp. strain C.ain C.
Both strains of KD-1212 and DAH-1056 were isolated and identified from animal manure-contaminated soil by screening bacterial strains for the removal of sulfur compound-malodor with such substrate as sodium thiosulfate or free sulfur. Then the characteristics on the incubation of these microbes were observed under various incubating-condition such as pH, temperature, aerobic or anaerobic, substrate(sulfur compound) concentration, nitrogen and carbon source and rotating speed for mixing, and the optimum incubating condition was established. The optimum pHs of KD-1212 and DAH-1056 were 7.0 and 4.0, respectively, and their optimum temperatures were in the range of $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$. Another autotrophic strain, ED-1138, was isolated from contaminated soil. The strain DAH-1056 excelled a strain Thiobacillus sp. IW in eliminating hydrogen sulfide during the process of malodor-biofiltration with a fixed strain. The characteristics on the incubation of strain KD-1212 were observed under various substrate-concentrations, nitrogen and carbon sources. KD-1212 favored glucose and maltose, and yeast extract as carbon sources and nitrogen source, respectively. The optimum concentrations of substrate and nitrogen source were 25 mM of sodium thiosulfate and 0.5% yeast extract, respectively for the growth of strain KD-1212.

In the existing research, the ammonia aqueous solution was used in order to remove the Nitrogen dioxide using the scrubber. However, ammonia is poisonous and stench is extreme. So, the system application follows the difficulty. Experiments were conducted to find a substitute material ammonia. The sodium hydroxide(NaOH), sodium thiosulfate ($Na_2S_2O_3$), and urea were used with the substitute substance. The experimental condition proceeded as the optimum conditions in the existing ammonia use. The experimental result NaOH and $Na_2S_2O_3$ was available. NaOH showed the efficiency which is the highest in 2.5%. And $Na_2S_2O_3$ showed the efficiency which is the highest in 5.0%. The efficiency was not fixed and the urea was inappropriate with the substitute substance.

The role of an effective microbial species is critical to the successful application of biological processes to remove sulfur compounds. A bacterial strain was isolated from the soil of a malodorous site and identified as Burkholderia spp. This isolate was able to oxidize thiosulfate to sulfate, with simultaneous pH decrease and accumulation of elemental sulfur. The specific growth rate and the sulfate oxidation rate using the thiosulfate basal medium were $0.003 h^{-1}\;and\;3.7 h^{-1}$, respectively. The isolated strain was mixotrophic, and supplementation of $0.2\%$ (w/v) of yeast extract to the thiosulfate-basal medium increased the specific growth rate by 50-fold. However, the rate of sulfate oxidation was more than ten times higher without yeast extract. The isolate grew best at pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, and the sulfate oxidation rate was the highest at 0.12 M sodium thiosulfate. In an upflow biofilter, the isolated strain was able to degrade $H_2S\;with\;88\%$ efficiency at 8 ppm and 121/h of incoming gas concentration and flow rate, respectively. The cell density at the bottom of the column reached $3.2{\times}10^8$ CFU/(g bead) at a gas flow rate of 121/h.
This study was conducted to identify leakage of fluorescent substances out of 56 crops and to develop sorting methods of nonviable seeds of Chinese cabbage. Fluorescent substances were detected from 36 species, Chinese cabbage, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, egg plant and rape seed etc. In Chinese cabbage, the germination rate of non-sorted seeds decreased rapidly with ageing of seeds at 45$^{\circ}C$ and 100%. After Chinese cabbage seeds soaked for 4hrs and coated with cellulose, the sorting ratio of non fluorescent seeds were decreased 91.3% to 1.7% by increasing ageing periods from control to 8 days, while fluorescent seeds were increased drastically from 8.7% to 98.3%. Also, incubation of water soaked dead seeds of Chinese cabbage treated with 0.5-1.0% ninhydrin and 0.01N sodium thiosulfate for 30~60 minutes at 35$^{\circ}C$ developed purple color.
A study has been carried out for a scheme of the selective extraction and determination of cesium, sodium and nuclides by the ion association with dicyclohexyl-24-crown-8 and sodium tetraphenylborate from primary coolant of a pressurized water reactor. For that purpose, the effects of hydrogen, cesium and borate ions on the extraction have been investigated. Interferences of iodine and xenon nuclides were found but could be removed by reducing with sodium thiosulfate and back extraction with 1 N hydrochloric acid solution, respectively.
Tumoral calcinosis (TC) is a condition resulting from extensive calcium phosphate precipitation, primarily in the periarticular tissues around major joints. Calciphylaxis is a fatal ischemic vasculopathy mainly affecting dermal blood vessels and subcutaneous fat. This syndrome is rare and predominantly occurs in patients with end-stage renal disease. Here, we report on a rare case involving a patient with TC complicated with calciphylaxis. Our patient was a 31-year-old man undergoing hemodialysis who presented with masses on both shoulders and necrotic cutaneous ulcers, which were associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism, on his lower legs. He underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy, and sodium thiosulfate (STS) was administered for 27 weeks. Twenty months after beginning the STS treatment course, he experienced dramatic relief of his TC and calciphylaxis.
