Background: Citric acid (CA) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) have been used to disinfect animals to protect them against avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease. Objectives: We performed a good laboratory practice (GLP)-compliant animal toxicity study to assess the acute toxic effects of CA and NaOCl aerosol exposure in Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: Groups of five rats per sex were exposed for 4 h to four concentrations of the two chemicals, i.e., 0.00, 0.22, 0.67, and 2.00 mg/L, using a nose-only exposure. After a single exposure to the chemicals, clinical signs, body weight, and mortality was observed during the observation period. On day 15, an autopsy, and then gross findings, and histopathological analysis were performed. Results: After exposure to CA and NaOCl, body weight loss was observed but recovered. Two males died in the CA 2.00 mg/L group and, two males and one female died in the 2.00 mg/L NaOCl group. In the gross findings and histopathological analysis, discoloration of the lungs was observed in the CA exposed group and inflammatory lesions with discoloration of the lungs were observed in the NaOCl exposed group. These results suggest that the lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of CA is 1.73390 mg/L for males and > 1.70 mg/L for females. For NaOCl, the LC50 was 2.22222 mg/L for males and 2.39456 mg/L for females. Conclusions: The Globally Harmonized System is category 4 for both CA and NaOCl. In this study, the LC50 results were obtained through a GLP-based acute inhalation toxicity assessment. These results provide useful data to reset safety standards for CA and NaOCl use.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate tissue dissolving capacity, antimicrobial effect of Hydroxyethylidene bisphosphonate (HEBP) interacting with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as conventional endodontic irrigants and to determine tissue dissolving efficacy depended on temperature. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 bovine muscles were randomly distributed into 8 groups (n = 10). After their initial weights determined on a precision scale, the specimens in each group were immersed in the solutions for 5, 10 and 15 min and reweighted at each time period. Agar diffusion test inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis was performed for antimicrobial effect of each endodontic irrigants. Results: The ability to dissolve organic matter was greater in NaOCl group following NaOCl and HEBP mixture. Heated NaOCl ($40^{\circ}C$) and NaOCl/ HEBP mixture was greater tissue dissolving efficacy than room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). Antimicrobial effect was greater and significant in the following order EDTA > EDTA + 1% NaOCl > $1%\;NaOCl{\geq}1%\;NaOCl$ + HEBP. Conclusion: HEBP as soft chelating agent does not disturb antimicrobial effect and less affected tissue dissolving efficacy as inherent properties of NaOCl. In the heated NaOCl/HEBP mixture analyzed, it dissolved more the organic matter than room temperature.
This study was concerned with the influence of reaction conditions on the surface friction properties of Syrene-Butadiene Rubber(SBR) sheet when it was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid. The results of this study were as follows. SEM photographs of chlorinated SBR surface showed uneven etching caused by the chlorination. In the FTIR spectra, the intensity of C=C peak of SBR was decreased with increasing the concentration of sodium hypochlorite. Otherwise there was no trace of C=C peak in spectrum of SBR treated with 5 wt% NaOCl with pH 0.1 for 90 seconds. EDX spectra showed that relative content of chlorine of SBR was increased with increasing the amount of sodium hypochlorite, and also affected with pH condition of acid solution. Friction angle and friction coefficient of SBR were influenced with concentration of sodium hypochlorite, but were not with pH condition of acid solution.
Objectives: The usage of medicinal plants as natural antimicrobial agents has grown in many fields including dental medicine. The aim of this in vitro study was three-fold: (i) to determine the chemical compositions of the Ferula gummosa essential oil (FGEO), (ii) to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of the oil with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX), (iii) to assess the toxic behavior of FGEO in different concentrations compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Materials and Methods: Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the chemical compositions of the oil. The disk diffusion method and a broth micro-dilution susceptibility assay were exploited to assess the antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis, and Candida albicans. The cytocompatibility of the FGEO was assessed on L929 fibroblasts, and compared to that of NaOCl and CHX. Results: Twenty-seven constituents were recognized in FGEO. The major component of the oil was ${\beta}$-pinene (51.83%). All three irrigants significantly inhibited the growth of all examined microorganisms compared to the negative control group. FGEO at $50{\mu}g/mL$ was effective in lower concentration against Enterococcus faecalis than 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX, and was also more potent than 0.2% CHX against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. FGEO was a cytocompatible solution, and had significantly lower toxicity compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Conclusions: FGEO showed a promising biological potency as a root canal disinfectant. More investigations are required on the effectiveness of this oil on intracanal bacterial biofilms.

Objectives: Irrigants are imperative in endodontic therapy for the elimination of pathogens from the infected root canal. The present study compared the antimicrobial efficacy of octenidine dihydrochloride (OCT) with chlorhexidine (CHX) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) against Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) for root canal disinfection. Materials and Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was obtained using serial dilution method. The agar diffusion method was then used to determine the zones of inhibition for each irrigant. Lastly, forty 6-mm dentin blocks were prepared from human mandibular premolars and inoculated with S. epidermidis. Samples were randomly divided into 4 groups of 10 blocks and irrigated for 3 minutes with saline (control), 2% CHX, 3% NaOCl, or 0.1% OCT. Dentin samples were then collected immediately for microbial analysis, including an analysis of colony-forming units (CFUs). Results: The MICs of each tested irrigant were 0.05% for CHX, 0.25% for NaOCl, and 0.0125% for OCT. All tested irrigants showed concentration-dependent increase in zones of inhibition, and 3% NaOCl showed the largest zone of inhibition amongst all tested irrigants (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among the CFU measurements of 2% CHX, 3% NaOCl, and 0.1% OCT showing complete elimination of S. epidermidis in all samples. Conclusions: This study showed that OCT was comparable to or even more effective than CHX and NaOCl, demonstrating antimicrobial activity at low concentrations against S. epidermidis.

This study aimed to evaluate surface morphology and resin tag penetration of resin infiltration into primary anterior teeth after enamel deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) prior to phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) etching. Ninety primary anterior teeth with non-cavitated caries lesion were devided five groups according to enamel pretreatment as follows, group I-15% hydrochloric acid (HCl) 2min. ; group II-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group III-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group IV-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. ; group V-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. Fifteen teeth were examined etched surface structure using field emission-scanning electron microscope. Seventy five teeth were infiltrated with resin, maximum penetration depth and percentage penetration were analysed using dual fluorescence confocal microscopy. As the application time of NaOCl increased, ratio of enamel type I, II were increased. Percentage penetration (PP) was higher in group V than group II, III (p < 0.05). PP of group IV, V did not show any differences. Non-cavitated caries of primary anterior teeth can be treated with resin infiltration. Enamel deproteinization with NaOCl prior to 35% $H_3PO_4$ etching could be an alternative of 15% HCl etching in resin infiltration.

Corn starch was modified by oxidation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as an attempt to expand the application of starches in food industry. Corn starch was oxidized with 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.5% active Cl/g starch at pH 7.0 and $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. The size, shape and amylose content of oxidized starches were similar to those of native corn starch. As the extent of oxidation increased, solubility, swelling power and the amount of soluble amylose increased, X-ray diffraction patterns changed, and relative crystallinity decreased. In Brabender amylogram, oxidation did not chance the gelatinization temperature, but oxidized starches had a lower peak in viscosity and their cooled pastes gave less setback, compared with native corn starch.
Studies were conducted to determine the potential of sodium hypochlorite(SHC) on the control of bacterial yellow blotch in cultivated oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. SHC at the concentration of 80 ppm was effective on the control of Pseudomonas agarici causing yellow blotch in oyster mushroom except number 916 isolate. In vitro the mycelial growth was slightly inhibited at the concentration higher than 100 ppm of sodium hypochlorite, but retardation of the mycelial growth was soon recovered. Spray of SHC solution at the concentration of 40-50 ppm per day significantly reduced the incidence of the yellow blotch without impairing the growth of oyster mushroom in field culture. However, the higher concentration of SHC(67 ppm) induced yellow brown or dark gray in color and deformed cap and elongated stripe in morphology of fruiting body. Results indicate that periodical spray of sodium hypochlorite seems to be the recommendable method for protection against bacterial yellow blotch disease in oyster mushroom without reducing food quality.

The recovery of gold in cyclone type electrolytic cell was conducted from solution for stripping gold of PCB by cyanide. The electrolytic recovery behaviors of gold was investigated by reaction time and addition of electrolytic sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and gold plating additive (KG-120). Because the electrolysis generated NaOCl reacted with the cyanide in the leachate by alkaline chlorination, more than 99% of the cyanide was removed at a $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ ratio of 1.0. When NaOCl was added during the recovery of the gold from cyanide leachate in the cyclone electrolytic cell, the recovery of gold was 98% at the ratio of $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ from 0.5 to 2.5 in 480 minutes and decreased rapidly over the ratio of 3.0. Gold was recovered more than 99% by adding 1.5 and 4.5%(v/v) of KG-120 with NaOCl in 480 minutes. In particular, when the concentration of KG-120 was 3.5 and 4.5%(v/v), more than 96% of gold was recovered within 240 minutes and the initial recovery rate was relatively faster. The optimum concentration of KG-120 is 3.5%(v/v) considering the economic feasibility and efficiency.
Objectives: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is an excellent bactericidal agent, but it is detrimental to stem cell survival, whereas intracanal medicaments such as calcium hydroxide ($Ca[OH]_2$) promote the survival and proliferation of stem cells. This study evaluated the effect of sequential NaOCl and $Ca(OH)_2$ application on the attachment and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). Materials and Methods: DPSCs were obtained from human third molars. All dentin specimens were treated with 5.25% NaOCl for 30 min. DPSCs were seeded on the dentin specimens and processed with additional 1 mg/mL $Ca(OH)_2$, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) treatment, file instrumentation, or a combination of these methods. After 7 day of culture, we examined DPSC morphology using scanning electron microscopy and determined the cell survival rate with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. We measured cell adhesion gene expression levels after 4 day of culture and odontogenic differentiation gene expression levels after 4 wk using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: DPSCs did not attach to the dentin in the NaOCl-treated group. The gene expression levels of fibronectin-1 and secreted phosphoprotein-1 gene in both the $Ca(OH)_2$- and the EDTA-treated groups were significantly higher than those in the other groups. All $Ca(OH)_2$-treated groups showed higher expression levels of dentin matrix protein-1 than that of the control. The dentin sialophosphoprotein level was significantly higher in the groups treated with both $Ca(OH)_2$ and EDTA. Conclusions: The application of $Ca(OH)_2$ and additional treatment such as EDTA or instrumentation promoted the attachment and differentiation of DPSCs after NaOCl treatment.
