The surface of wiper blade(W/B) rubber was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the hydrochloric acid(HCI) and sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl). From the results of contact angle measurement, friction coefficient measurement, and ATR-IR spectra, the surface characteristics of chlorinated W/B rubber with time of chlorination were studied. Contact angles for W/B rubber with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration were measured for the water and ethylene glycol. From the results, contact angle fell rapidly with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration, reaching a constant value after about 10min. And the wettability of W/B rubber surface by means of chlorination has been improved. For an unchlorinated W/B rubber, the friction coefficient with time of chlorination decreased from 1.27 to 0.20~0.23 on full chlorination. As the results it was considered that abrasion resistance of W/B rubber surface has been also improved. The values of pH and $Cl^-$ ion concentration in a chlorine treatment solution decreased as the extent of chlorination of W/B rubber surface increased. From the results of ATR-IR spectra, it was observed that C=C double band of W/B rubber surface transformed into C-Cl band, but quantitative determination of the extent of chlorination was not feasible because of the complexity of chlorination reactions.
The water containing soluble manganese may cause problems such as discolored water, unpleasant taste, fouling or scaling of pipes in water distribution system, and so on. Conventional water treatment processes using sand filtration or sedimentation after oxidation, however, cannot often meet manganese standard for drinking water. Two types of oxidants, potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), were utilized at the same time for manganese oxidation, and then the precipitated manganese oxides were removed by low pressure membrane filtration in this study. In batch experiments, the multiple injection of both oxidants showed more effective manganese removal than did the single injection using either of them. Moreover, the deterioration of manganese removal at low temperature was less serious for the multiple injection than that for the single injection. Manganese removal by the continuous system of oxidation by multiple injection combined with membrane filtration was higher than those by batch experiments at the same oxidation conditions. In addition, less membrane fouling was observed for membrane filtration with oxidation during continuous membrane filtration than membrane filtration without oxidation. These results indicate that the oxidation by multiple injection coupled with membrane filtration was efficient and applicable to actual water treatment for manganese removal.
This study was carried out to induce plant regeneration via multiple shoot formation from sucker explants of Rubus fruticosus L. ${\times}$ R. parvifolius L. To induce adventitious shoots, the sucker explants were sterilized in 1.2% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution, and then were cultured on the full and 1/2 MS solid medium supplemented with BA (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). After 4 weeks of culture, the highest frequency (83.3%) of shoot formation from sucker explants was obtained from the full MS medium with $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA. The highest shoot number (3.7) per explant was obtained from the full MS medium with $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA. After 12 weeks of culture, the number of shoots (15.4) per explant was increased. The highest frequency (95%) of root formation was obtained from the 1/2 MS medium, when the explant with shoot were cultured on the full, 1/2 and 1/4 MS medium. The survival rate of the plantlets after transfer to plastic pots containing sand, soil, and vermiculite (1.1:1, vol.) was 95%. The results indicate that multiple shoot procedure can be applied for an efficient mass propagation of Rubus fruticosus L. ${\times}$ R. parvifolius L.

The relation between performance maintenance conditions and those cost efficiency was studied to choose an optimum operating condition in the seawater desalination pretreatment system. A hollow fiber microfiltration module, which was developed with domestic technology, was tested with the various operating conditions such as chemically enhanced backwash cycles and design dosages of a cleaning chemical. Transmembrane pressure was measured to investigate membrane fouling status and cleaning degree. In addition, economic analysis was performed to compare water production costs by the operation condition. As a result, The operation mode III, chemically enhanced backwash at once a day with 100 mg/L of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was selected. The concurrent evaluation between membrane filtration performance and its economic analysis will be suitable to choose an efficient optimum condition.

The treatment of combined sewer overflow (CSO) is one of potential concerns in domestic wastewater treatment in Korea due to the pre-announce of CSO regulations. This work investigated the effects of disinfectant (NaOCl) concentration (0.11 to 4.0 mg $Cl_2/L$), pH (6.5 to 8.0), temperature (15 to $25^{\circ}C$), ammonia (10 to 41 mg N/L), and suspended solids (91 to 271 mg SS/L) on the chlorine disinfection of CSO. The effect of NaOCl concentration on the pseudo-$1^{st}$ order reaction rate for total coliform inactivation was described well with a saturation-type model with the half-velocity constant of 1.212 mg/L. The total coliform inactivation reaction rate decreased with SS and pH, and increased with temperature. Ammonia in the examined range did not affect the disinfection kinetics. A chlorine contact tank with the injection chlorine level of 1 mg $Cl_2/L$ and the hydraulic retention time of 1.25 min is estimated to reduce total coliform from $1{\times}10^5MPN/mL$ to 1,000 MPN/mL at 271 mg SS/L, $15^{\circ}C$, and pH 8.0. Chlorine would be a proper option for the disinfection of CSO.
A number of investigations have shown that the presence of bacteria is prerequisite for developing pulpal and/or periradicular pathosis. Depending on the stage of pulpal pathosis, various species of bacteria can be cultured from infected root canals. Kakehashi et al. showed that exposure of pulpal tissue in germ-free rats was characterized by minimal inflammation and dentinal bridging while exposure of pulpal tissue in conventional rats with normal oral flora was characterized by pulpal necrosis, chronic inflammation, and periapical lesions. Currently used methods of cleaning and shaping, especially rotary instrumentation techniques, produce a smear layer that covers root canal walls and the openings to the dentinal tubules. The smear layer contains inorganic and organic substances that include fragments of odontoblastic processes, microorganisms, their by products and necrotic materials. Because of its potential contamination and adverse effect on the outcome of root canal therapy, it seems reasonable to suggest removal of the smear layer for disinfection of the entire root canal system. Presence of this smear layer prevents penetration of intracanal medications into the irregularities of the root canal system and the dentinal tubules and also prevents complete adaptation of obturation materials to the prepared root canal surfaces. Removal of the smear layer by an intracanal irrigant and placement of an antibacterial agent in direct contact with the content of dentinal tubules should allow disinfection of this complex system and better outcome for the root canal therapy. A new solution, which was a mixture of a tetracycline, an acid, and a detergent(MTAD), was developed in the Department of Endodontics, Dental School. Lorna Linda University, USA. It has been demonstrated that MTAD was an effective solution for the removal of the smear layer and does not significantly change the structure of the dentinal tubules when used as a final irrigant in conjunction with 1 % NaOCl as a root canal irrigant. Studies are in progress to compare the anti- microbial properties of this newly developed solution with those of sodium hypochlorite and EDTA that are currently used to irrigate the root canals and remove the smear layer from the surfaces of instrumented root canals.canals.

In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of membrane fouling caused by water temperature in the Membrane bioreactor(MBR) process and try to derive the membrane fouling control by chemical enhanced backwashing(CEB). The extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) concentration was analyzed according to the water temperature in the MBR, and the membrane fouling characteristics were investigated according to the conditions, with sludge & without sludge, through a lab-scale reactor. As shown in the existing literature the fouling resistance rate was increased within sludge with the water temperature was lowered. However, in the lab-scale test using the synthetic wastewater, the fouling resistance increased with the water temperature. This is because that the protein of the EPS was more easily adsorbed on the membrane surface due to the increase of entropy due to the structural rearrangement of the protein inside the protein as the water temperature increases. In order to control membrane fouling, we tried to derive the cleaning characteristics of CEB by using sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl). We selected the condition with the chemicals and the retention time, and the higher the water temperature and the chemical concentration are the higher the efficiencies. It is considered that the increasing temperature accelerated the chemical reaction such as protein peptide binding and hydrolysis, so that the attached proteinaceous structure was dissolved and the frequency of the reaction collision with the protein with the chemical agent becomes higher. These results suggest that the MBRs operation focus on the fouling control of cake layer on membrane surface in low temperatures. On the other hand, the higher the water temperature is the more the operation strategies of fouling control by soluble EPS adsorption are needed.

Destruction of marine ecology system induced by the bal last water discharged from ships is one of the most serious problem among the various ship associated environmental impacts. International Maritime Organization (IMO) has actively dealt with this problem for a long time and is going to start to activate very strong international treatment for preventing ocean from such serious environmental impact. Various technologies of ballast water treatment are now being developed all over the world. In this paper, recent trend of existing ballast water treatment technologies is investigated in detail. Furthermore, in order to apply electrolysis technology to ballast wale r treatment, its basic principle is reviewed theoretically and its feasibility is checked through some in-situ experiments. Quite good results are shown in the experiments enough to confirm its applicability in ballast water treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbial inhibitory activity and physicochemical quality of fresh carrot juice prepared with different environmentally-friendly washing methods during low temperature storage. Individual and combined treatments with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, $NaHCO_3$) and citric acid were applied to carrots for 10 min. Tap water and 50 ppm of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) were used as the control. Combined treatment of 1% $NaHCO_3$ and 1% citric acid significantly reduced total aerobic counts and coliforms. In addition, combined treatment of 1% $NaHCO_3$ and 1% citric acid inhibited microbial growth for 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ in a shelf-life study. There were no significant differences among the sanitizers in terms of $^{\circ}Brix$, acidity, pH, and color. Changes in physicochemical quality were not significantly different by sanitizer but were affected by storage temperature. These results indicate that washing with combined treatment of 1% $NaHCO_3$ and 1% citric acid is an effective method to inhibit the microbial population and maintain physicochemical quality. Therefore, combined treatment of 1% $NaHCO_3$ and 1% citric acid can be effectively used to sanitize and prepare carrot juice without affecting other properties.
The catalytic oxidations of several olefins in $CH_2Cl_2$ have been investigated using non-redox metalloporphyrin (M=Ga(III), In(III), Tl(III)) complexes as catalyst and sodium hypochlorite as terminal oxidant. Porphyrins were $(p-CH_3O)TPP,\;(p-CH_3)TPP,\;TPP,\;(p-F)TPP,\;(p-Cl)TPP\;and\;(F_20)TPP$ (TPP=tetraphenylporphyrin), and olefins were $(p-CH_3O)-,\;(p-CH_3)-,\;(p-H)-,\;(p-F)-,\;(p-Cl)-\;and\;(p-Br)styrene$styrene and cyclopentene and cyclohexene. The substrate conversion yield was discussed according to the substituent effects of metalloporphyrin and substrate, and the radius effect of non-redox metal ion. The conversion yield of substrate by changing the substituent of TPP increased in the order of $p-CH_3O$ < $p-CH_3$ < H < p-F < p-Cl, which was consistent with the sequence of $4{\sigma}$ values of TPP. But the substituent effect of substrate on the conversion yield decreased with increasing the ${\sigma}^+$ values on substrates in the order of p-CH3O > p-CH3 > H > p-Cl > p-Br. For the oxidation of several olefins, the complexes of In(III)- and Tl(III)-porphyrins turned out to be more active catalysts than Ga(III)-porphyrin.
