  • When women are exposed to images of other attractive women such as media models, it is known that many go through a social comparison process and a contrast effect occurs which results in unfavorable perception and attitudes toward the self. This paper suggests women's perception of control over their appearance as one of the factors that may moderate the contrast effect of a social comparison with attractive media models. An experiment with 211 women was conducted to examine the differential effect of viewing attractive models versus non-human images on the responses of women with high/low perceived control over appearance. A two(Stimuli Type: attractive-model image vs. non-human image) by two(Perceived Control over Appearance: High vs. Low) MANCOVA model was tested with physical appearance anxiety, self-esteem, and body satisfaction as dependent variables and appearance orientation, body mass index, age, years of schooling, ethnicity, and marital status as covariates. A significant Perceived Control main effect on Physical Appearance Anxiety and Self-Esteem and a significant Stimuli Type by Perceived Control interaction effect on Physical Appearance Anxiety and Self-Esteem were found. Those who perceived high control over their appearance were more likely to have higher self-esteem and lower appearance anxiety. However, among those who saw attractive model's images, women perceived low appearance control showed less anxiety and higher body satisfaction than those perceived high appearance control.

  • The purpose of this paper is to help develop a comprehensive understanding of the humidifier disinfectant disaster from diverse perspectives based on a critical review of the relevant academic research papers published so far in the fields of both natural and social science. The authors reviewed pertinent articles in the six academic areas of law, social science, humanities, medicine, toxicology, and environmental health. A proper understanding of the issue of humidifier disinfectant is a challenging task because diverse aspects of it have become related over the more than two decades since such products were first released to the market in 1994. Technical and esoteric issues such as the complex system for relief and compensation for health damages and the approval of chemical toxicity are known to be major impediments to viewing the bigger picture regarding this tragedy. The authors believe that experts need to consider a comprehensive perspective going beyond their individual research arena to gain a better understanding of this issue, especially since it was an alarm signal on ethics and the role of experts and scholars in Korean society. Besides the two professors arrested by the prosecutor's office, it should be remembered that medical doctors recommended patients use humidifiers and disinfectants, and the media was inactive in reporting on this issue. Furthermore, the current paucity of examination of the social and political implications of this tragedy calls for more active engagement by researchers in the humanities and social sciences. In this regard, this paper is a work of self-examination and self-criticism by the authors that could resonate with the overall academic community.

  • The dissemination of smart devices has made a lot of changes in overall social activities. In particular, people use various types of smart devices in their spare time, such as watching video clips, but there is a lack of research on external factors influencing the attitude toward using such devices. Therefore, in this study, the effects of video viewing environmental factors (e.g. screen size and video length) and personal factors (e.g. gender and need for entertainment) on perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude to use devices based on technology acceptance model. As a result of analyzing 660 users having different smart devices, the attitude to use smart devices is more positive as the screen size increases, but there is no difference according to gender. In addition, while the length of video clips does not affect the attitude to use, the need for entertainment positively affects the attitude to use. Based on the results of this study, we expect that it can be used for optimized customer marketing and management strategy that integrates product development and video content production in consideration of factors such as video viewing environmental factors and personal factors.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Average intake of calcium among college students is below the recommended intake, and knowledge surrounding the attitudinal and behavioral factors that influence milk and dairy intake, a primary food source of calcium, is limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate college students' attitudes and behaviors concerning milk and dairy consumption and their association with calcium intake. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants were 1,730 undergraduate students who completed an online survey (SurveyMonkey) as part of baseline data collection for a social marketing dairy campaign. The online survey assessed attitudes and behaviors concerning milk and dairy intake, and calcium intake. Questions about milk- and dairy-related attitudes and behaviors were grouped into 14 factors using factor analysis. Predictors of calcium intake were then evaluated. RESULTS: Median calcium intake across all participants was 928.6 mg/day, with males consuming higher calcium intakes than females (P < 0.001). Adjusted for gender, calcium intakes were most strongly (and positively) correlated with associating milk with specific eating occasions and availability (i.e., storing calcium-rich foods in one's dorm or apartment) (both P < 0.001). Other correlates of calcium intake included: positive-viewing milk as healthy (P = 0.039), having family members who drink milk) (P = 0.039), and taking calcium supplements (P = 0.056); and negative-parent rules concerning milk (P = 0.031) and viewing milk in dining halls negatively (P = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Calcium intakes among college students enrolled in the current study was below the recommended dietary allowance of 1,000 mg/day, reinforcing the need for dietary interventions in this target population, especially females. Practitioners and researchers should consider the factors found here to impact calcium intake, particularly associating milk with specific eating occasions (e.g., milk with breakfast) and having calcium-rich foods available in the dorm room or apartment, as intervention strategies in future efforts aimed at promoting milk and dairy foods and beverages for improved calcium intake in college students.

  • Records, especially the authentic records the nation secured, have an ontological feature of proof that is able to persuade the current present of the past present, and inherent in it is faith that originates from fundamental objectivity. Therefore the image of silence that such strictness of records creates realizes the detonation of specific memories through the act of visual exhibition. This research started from the notion that records achieve social vitality and return through its exhibition, as well as the critical awareness that it 're-mediate' the past and memory through interactions with image. The reason for viewing the archival exhibition as the subject of user analyzation is that in the process where exhibition sorts and arranges records, it is the tool and mediation that most distinctly exposes the identity of the archives. Hence, this research first analyzes national archives, particularly the exhibition of "presidential" records, which is in the center of memory conflict, in the viewpoint of the cultural practice of memory. Afterwards, it discusses empirical research and results on how users accept and resist the meaning of the exhibition through actual surveys of users after their viewing of an exhibition.

  • COVID-19 provided visitors with new online concerts that gradually increased in many ways. The disadvantage of current online concerts is that cannot make full use of the interaction with others. We hope to provide online concert audiences with the same experience as offline. This study was conducted under the condition that the audience watched online concerts and movies individually or group. Experimental results confirm that watching online concerts collectively will increase the sense of immersion. It can be used as a design guide for the virtual public viewing environment in the future.

In this study, by choosing the theme of sitting , the transformation of man's behavioral models would be examined in sociological terms. By viewing the chair as an emblematic objects made for more than just sitting, the chair has revealed the relations of man with his environment since the history of furnishings began. Qualified architects and designers know that chairs are no longer the objects, but the primary subject of furnishings. Through this examination of the emblematic typologies of periodic chairs in the history of the Western culture, in terms of their relationships with politics , religions, monarchies, societies, and etc., the meaning of the designs could be find and which could be the resolutions for the future innovative design. • This paper attempts to prove Dickens's hopeful view of the future in his last completed novel Our Mutual Friend. This novel has been usually regarded as one of the "dark" novels, "dark" in the sense of viewing social reality and the future negatively. However, although it has the dark descriptive color of society typical in Dickens's later novels, it still contains some elements that point to a better future. To prove this positive view of future, this paper will disentangle the intricate narrative structure of Our Mutual Friend and find out the true meaning of the dust--money. In addition, it will investigate how people react to dust(-like money). From a close study of several characters' lives, it will testify that the dark world of Our Mutual Friend, in the end, could be a world of regeneration, a world that will lead to a better future.
