  • This research aims to analyze the role of social care services after the unification, assuming that the unification would occur in 2020 in a peaceful manner. While much has been discussed about the unification in recent years inside or outside academia, most of discussion tends to focus on political and economic dimensions. Also, social policy studies on North Korean defectors have increased, but few pay attention to social policy strategies after the possible unification. In this context, this study explores various explicit and implicit roles of social care services and possible strategies after the unification. As research methodology, it employs one of the scenario methods, 'TAIDA', for projecting and simulating uncertain future. In so doing, first, it reviews South and North Korean socio-economic experiences during last two decades as feedback and German unification experiences as feedforward. In addition, it utilizes a expert survey. Based on the reviews together with the survey result, it discusses various influences of social care services after the unification and draws policy implications. This research aruges that social care services could have profound effects on the stability of socio-economic conditions after the unification.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose what psychological education is needed for activation of interchange between the South Korea and the North Korea and ultimately for the completion of Korean unification. We learned this reason from the German unification case. The Germany was unified 17 years ago, but many researchers evaluate that it will take about 30 years more for German people to complete real and inner unification. So, we proposed our own unification education in a psychological aspect for faster and inner unification, which is based on the principle that we should go ahead according to our situation, not simply follow the way Germany went. Therefore, we should start psychological education for unification from now on, even though unification is not accomplished at the present and Germany didn't do that. Because we can predict the pre-unification (interchange) stage would be long unlike the Germany, psychological education for unification is needed during this interchange stage consistently. For the person-oriented unification education, we should educate adaptation-enhancement strategy for each person to keep psychological stability in the interchange and unification stage, beyond simply educating ideology focusing on the political and structural unification.

  • This study investigated the German experience in the transition to a unified health care system and suggests the following implications for Korea. First, Germany could have made use of the unification process better if there had been a good road map. Therefore Korea must develop a well prepared road map that considers all possible situations. Second, Germany saw an opportunity for the improvement of the health care system in the early stage of unification but could not take advantage of it because the situation changed dramatically and they had not sufficiently prepared for it. Korea should take into account the opportunity for improvement of the present health care system, such as the roles of public health and traditional medicine. Thirdly, the conditions f North Korea seem to be far worse than those of former East Germany and also worse than even those of other transition countries. Therefore Korea should design a long-term road map taking as many variables into account as possible, including the different rigid way of thinking and the interrelationship among the social sectors. Fourthly, during the German reunification unexpected factors changed the direction of the events. Korea should have a separate plan for the unexpected factors.

The results of this study are as follows. First, 'peace', 'unification', 'education', 'research', 'student', 'school', 'teacher', 'target', and 'Korean Peninsula' were commonly important keywords in peace education and unification education. Second, the top topic of peace education was 'peace education and civic education', and the top topic of unification education was ' sympathy and participation in unification education'. Third, topics that show an upward trend by regime in peace education were 'World Peace and Human Rights' and 'Object and Direction of Peace Education', and 'Subject of Unification Education' as topics that showed an upward trend by regime in unification education. Fourth, in peace education, the centrality of 'peace', 'education', 'student', 'school', and 'peace education' was high, and in unification education, 'unification', 'education', 'unification', 'school', and 'teacher' were high. Based on these results, it was intended to expand the horizon of understanding peace education and unification education, and to provide meaningful implications for establishing policies and conducting follow-up studies.

  • The present study was conducted to develop and validate a psychological scale that measures individuals' attitude toward unification of Korea (ATU-K). Building on major theoretical perspectives on the structure of attitude and the attitude-behavior link, we specified two sub-components each representing the cognitive and the affective dimension of people's attitude toward unification. In a survey that involved a stratified sample of Korean adults (N = 1,500), we found strong evidence showing the construct validity of the ATU-K scale. We also found evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. In a second survey involving another stratified sample of 1,500 Korean adults, we found the utility of the ATU-K scale in predicting people's intention to engage in unification-oriented behaviors (personal/collective). We also found that the ATU-K scale fares better in predicting the intention vis-a-vis the other measures of unification-related beliefs reported in previous research. We discuss implications of our findings and directions for future research.

  • There are many sociological methodology for the study on cyber community. Especially for the online social network which is constructed by the notion of the social network, the social network analysis can be a superior methodology for the understanding of the general phenomenon and the solutions for the problematic issues. As pointed by Manuel Castells, the problem of the unification and the fragmentation, which is came after the participation and the openness, is prevailed in cyber community by its characteristics. However, computational properties that exceed the limitation of the time and space can bestow other alternatives. The Open API in the social network services that is more popular in these days is the one of those alternatives. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the problematic phenomenon of online social network and to search the solutions for those problems with the acceptance of Open API technology.
