  • ESG Investment is emerging as a trend and common sense in the financial market. ESG Investment is an investment method that simultaneously pursue social sustainability and investment returns from a long-term perspective by reflecting non-financial factors such as environment, society and governance in addition to corporate financial performance in investment decisions. This study checked how the characteristics of ESG investment have been changed after Covid-19. Afterwards, it was confirmed that Covid-19 actually acted as a negative factor in the securities market by applying VAR model. At the same time, it was demonstrated that ESG indices of the US and Korea outperformed their benchmark in terms of return and risk during the pandemic regime. The result of this study hints that the importance of ESG investment will be unchanged after Covid-19. At the same time, it suggests that managers should avoid passive ESG management and engage in strategic ESG management based on knowledge management.

  • In this study, we aim to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility implementation, which is a major concern in previous research, on investment efficiency. The research method will be a qualitative study with reference to existing previous research. The three main claims to be addressed in this study will be summarized, and the research variables and research models will be described. As a result of the study, based on existing previous research, this study presented three issues to examine how a high level of corporate social responsibility performance increases investment efficiency. First, we argue that a company's high level of social responsibility will be positively related to investment efficiency. Second, it is argued that investment efficiency will be positively related to individual CSR components that represent the interests of primary stakeholders. Third, it is argued that companies with too high a CSR index and companies with a too low CSR index will have less correlation with investment efficiency. The contribution of this study will be to more accurately understand the impact of CSR on corporate investment efficiency. In the future, it is hoped that additional discoveries will be made through research that adopts the three claims presented in this study as hypotheses and empirically analyzes them. • This paper aims to estimate the social discount rate (SDR) rather than dig into its theoretical foundation. As SDRs can be derived by investigating both the rate of return on investment and the social time preference rate, we estimate the marginal productivity of both private and public capital and the time preference rate based on the Euler equation. In order to provide a single representative SDR, the weighted averages of the marginal productivity and time preference rate, whose weights are determined by the flow of funds data reflecting the social demand of funds, are presented. Based on the empirical results, we argue that the marginal productivity of private capital stands in the middle of the 3% range while that of public capital varies from 4.5% to 8.6%, with the time preference rate showing a decreasing trend from 3.2% in the early 2000s to 1.2% by around 2030. The single representative SDR or the weighted SDR is estimated to be approximately 3.0~4.5% and expected to continue its downward trend for the foreseeable future.

  • The choice of big public investment project needs an appropriate feasibility analysis before it is implemented, bemuse a rot wisely chosen one would bring about big and longrun societal costs. But the feasibility analysis for the big public investment project in Korea has been done without linking the economic benefits and environmental damages. Consequently social conflicts arose frequently during and after project implementation, owing to such concerns asincreasing costs and serious ecological damages. The recent social conflict over the Saemangeum Project is a typical case. This reclamation project began in 1991 and finished 60% of the whole process in 1999, when its feasibility was again assessed under the public pressure by the joint assessment team consisting of both citizen's and government's professionals. Even the assessment report by this joint team could not show the convincing results owing to the improper assessment procedure and failure to set proper feasibility criteria. This paper pointed out the limitations of our current procedure of feasibility assessment and identified the concrete problems that atosee during the recent reassessment process of the Saemangeum reclamation project by the joint team. In order to improve the current problem-ridden practices, it is concluded by the policy recommendation for establishing a right feasibility assessment procedure for the public investment projects.

  • This study investigates the long-run relationship between the de jure economic, political, and social globalization and foreign direct investments in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to establish whether policies that foster trade and investment relations among geographical entities can help revive the GCC countries from the prevailing economic debacles of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is driven by the GCC's quest to fully overcome the economic challenges occasioned by the outbreak of the global pandemic and position itself as the most potent regional economic bloc in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The study employs the panel data of the six GCC countries of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia from 1971 to 2017. The findings of the panel fully modified ordinary least square regression estimation show that the de jure economic and social globalization have a significant positive impact on the region's foreign direct investment inflows. The impact of the de jure political globalization on foreign direct investment is statistically significant but negatively signed. Based on the preceding findings, we offer some holistic policy recommendations to the GCC region as recipes for timely recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19 and beyond.

  • Unlike general public investment projects, when it comes to environmental public investment projects, there is a gap between those who pay the costs, and those who receive the benefits. This is because of the long term nature of environmental investments, which entails that the majority of the costs are paid by the current generation, while the benefits are reaped by future generations. Because of this, when the social discount rate is set at a standard, singular rate, an issue of relative underestimation of the benefits reaped by future generations may occur during the analytic process. This paper begins with the recognition of this problem, and attempts to estimate a suitable social discount rate that can be applied to environmental investment projects. Taking into account recent economic situations, the social discount rate is currently being estimated at between 2.9 ~ 4.9%. Also, this paper used preliminary feasibility studies that took place so far, to analyze the standard pattern of benefit generation. This revealed that alterations in social discount rates can bring significant changes in economic feasibility test results. Simulation results showed that roughly 6% of B/C ratios could be increased by 1%p. resulting in a decrease in social discount rates. Also if we use hyperbolic discount rates, instead of using the current singular rate, there would be a meaningful increase in the benefits for the future generation.
