This article examines the link between regional disparity and social mobility in India. There has been a steady rise in economic inequality in India. The rapid economic growth coupled with a rise in income inequality is a serious concern in India. While the emphasis is on inclusive growth, it appears difficult to tackle the problem without looking at the intricacies of the problem. The Social Mobility Index is an important tool that focuses on bringing long-term equality by identifying priority policy areas in the country. We used a multivariate statistical approach to construct a social mobility index at the regional level by considering several social and economic variables. Our findings show that while the Union Territory of Delhi ranks first in the social mobility index, Chhattisgarh has the least social mobility. From a policy perspective, a comprehensive examination of the determinants of the social mobility index shows that health, education access, and quality, and equity of education are of great importance in improving social mobility. Considering India's potential economic growth resulting from its 'demographic dividend' and improved access, markets, and technology, increasing social mobility through facilitating equal opportunities in society is key to achieving inclusive growth.
Objectives : Social phobia is frequently accompanied with autonomic nerve system symptoms. QT dispersion(QTd) is the maximum inter-lead difference in QT interval, an indicator of the autonomic nerve system(ANS) disparity of the heart itself. The objective of this study is to investigate the ANS disparity, which is measured by QTd, is associated with pathophysiology of social phobia. Methods : This research have compared QT dispersion of 25 physically healthy social phobia outpatients(16 men, 9 women, the average age $35.5{\pm}12.9$) and age and sex matched control group of mentally and physically healthy 25 volunteers(16 men, 9 women, the average age $34.83{\pm}12.7$). QTd was measured by previously described method. Results : QTd and rate-corrected QTd were significantly higher on the patient group than the control group[QTd(patients vs. controls : $52.60{\pm}27.63ms$ vs. $27.53{\pm}14.29ms$, p<0.0001), QTd(patients vs. controls : $55.79{\pm}27.98ms$ vs. $29.10{\pm}14.24ms$, p<0.0001)]. Conclusion : Our study showed that the patients with social phobia have higher QTd than the normal controls. These results suggest that the ANS disparity, which is measured by QTd, is associated with pathophysiology of social phobia.

Regionalism has become a liability in Korea, hampering national harmony and political stability. The regionalism finds its roots in several centuries back in history. The traditional regionalism was based on the provincial differences in cultural and social characteristics, and behavioral mannerism. Therefore, the traditional regionalism should be regarded as benign and common as in many other countries in the world. The modern version of Korean regionalism seems to be founded on the "discriminatory" treatments of Honam provinces in economic policy and the resultant regional economic disparity during the last three decades. Many believe that such "discriminatory" policy had been enforced during the period of the "third" and "fourth" republics under the influence of the key government officials and presidents form the Southeastern provinces. Since the early 80s, many public investment projects have found its home in the Honam region with the consideration of regional balance and more equitable distribution. This paper attempts to elucidate on various causes of regional disparity amplified during the period of industrialization, and also presents the economic indices which demonstrate the impacts of the policy in narrowing the economic disparity among the regions in recent years. The paper also clarifies the limits of regional economic policy in achieving regional. balance and consequently social integrity. The last part of the paper attempts to clarify the effective domain of regional policy and the new direction of regionalism.cy and the new direction of regionalism.

Socio-economic polarization in Korea partly due to recent globalization and industrial restructuring could reduce social mobility significantly through passing down educational achievement to one's children. Under the notion that residential segregation is geographical frame for the reproduction of educational inequality, this research investigates residential segregation by educational attainment and neighborhood disparity with a case study of Seoul. The statistical analyses employed local segregation measures such as Location Quotient and Local Moran's I and a variety of variables that reflect neighborhood characteristics. As a result, it found that there are sharp and clear contracts between low- and high-educational group concentrations/clusters particularly in terms of housing characteristics and educational facilities. This results provide some evidences that support the arguments about the causes of residential segregation by class in Korean Cities.
Academic interest has been drastically increased for the health disparities due to socioeconomic factors. For those who have a chronic illness such as diabetes, various psychosocial barriers related to illness management might affect and aggravate this disparity. This study focused on illness management barriers experienced by people with diabetes, and examined the differences by their Medicaid beneficiary status. The between group differences in illness management barriers, family support and health status were examined as well as the association between illness management barriers and health status. The sample of this study consists of 144 community dwelling adults who have diabetes, recruited from an outpatient diabetes clinic and a community welfare center. Medicaid beneficiaries reported poorer health status, and experienced more illness management barriers compared to their counterparts. Statistically significant differences were observed in barriers due to mental health, financial status, and lack of support. The between group difference in health status remained significant after controlling for the effect of demographic characteristics and illness related factors. Social work practitioners working with this population should address these illness management barriers to reduce socioeconomic health disparity.
Objectives: This study examined the trends in gender disparity in the self-rated health of people aged 25 to 64 in South Korea, a rapidly changing society, with specific attention to socio-structural inequality. Methods: Representative sample data were obtained from six successive, nationwide Social Statistics Surveys of the Korean National Statistical Office performed during 1992 to 2010. Results: The results showed a convergent trend in poor self-rated health between genders since 1992, with a sharper decline in gender disparity observed in younger adults (aged 25 to 44) than in older adults (aged 45 to 64). The diminishing gender gap seemed to be attributable to an increase in women;s educational attainment levels and to their higher status in the labor market. Conclusions: The study indicated the importance of equitable social opportunities for both genders for understanding the historical trends in the gender gap in the self-reported health data from South Korea.

The patients with a central nervous impediment and a sequela caused by a Stroke are continuously increasing, and the burden of family and society for Stroke patients are also increasing. Since Stroke patients are required to receive a long time medical treatment and care. It adds a economical burden as well as a mental and physical burden of patient's family. In addition, it is a primary factor which deepens the disparity of medical resources in social aspect. But the social concern for these patients are very insufficient and are entirely left to the patient's family The mediation of Skilled Nursing Facility for Stroke patients enable to receive more special and proper medical treatment and recuperation service in the middle of time when they return to home from hospital. This study began with the fact that the relationship between eductional environments and housing price needs to be understood in the context of the structuring of socio-spatial disparity. In other words, this paper focuses on the fact that the eduction with public features and functions plays a role of housing price determination and the rising price is privatized only to cause socio-spatial inequality. The study first examines how the education factors determine the housing price and cause increasing social inequality in Seoul at the macro level. It also carried out more detailed quantitative analysis on the relationship between educational environment factors and housing price with the case study of Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. This study found out that the close relationship between educational environment, housing price and social disparity at various spatial scales. It also figured out the the educational environment factors play an important role of housing price determination as much as material features per se. This means that the relationship between education, housing price and inequality needs to be dealt with not just socially but also in spatial perspective. In addition, the housing price determination is not just technical research but an social science issue in the context of rising socio-spatial disparity. This study is of only significance as a starting point of promising related researches in the future and much more efforts will be needed.

One of the major concerns to improve social-wellbeing is uneven spatial distribution of public service. The paper analyses the changes in the geographic distribution of public service facilities over time. The analysis is with a case study about JeollaNamdo Province including Gwangju Metropolitan City, 1985~2005. It employed eighteen proxies in different fields to measure public service and utilized cluster analyses, and various summary statistics including Schutz's coefficient and regression. The results show that overall social well-being has improved during the two decades and the gap between Gwanju City and the major cities in the JeollaNamdo Province has narrowed. However, the disparity between mainland and island areas still persists, calling our attention to the island areas.
Objectives : This study describes trends in the socioeconomic disparities in breast cancer screening among US women aged 40 or over, from 2000 to 2005. We assessed 1) the disparities in each socioeconomic dimension; 2) the changes in screening mammography rates over time according to income, education, and race; and 3) the sizes and trends of the disparities over time. Methods : Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2000 to 2005, we calculated the age-adjusted screening rate according to relative household income, education level, health insurance, and race. Odds ratios and the relative inequality index (RII) were also calculated, controlling for age. Results : Women in their 40s and those with lower relative incomes were less likely to undergo screening mammography. The disparity based on relative income was greater than that based on education or race (the RII among low-income women across the survey years was 3.00 to 3.48). The overall participation rate and absolute differences among socioeconomic groups changed little or decreased slightly across the survey years. However, the degree of each socioeconomic disparity and the relative inequality among socioeconomic positions remained quite consistent. Conclusions : These findings suggest that the trend of the disparity in breast cancer screening varied by socioeconomic dimension. Continued differences in breast cancer screening rates related to income level should be considered in future efforts to decrease the disparities in breast cancer among socioeconomic groups. More focused interventions, as well as the monitoring of trends in cancer screening participation by income and education, are needed in different social settings.
