  • In this paper, we design a dynamic state feedback smooth stabilizer for a nonlinear system whose Jacobian linearization may have uncontrollable because its eigenvalues are on the right half-plane. After designing an augmented system, a dynamic exponent scaling and backstepping enable one to explicitly design a smooth stabilizer and a continuously differentiable Lyapunov function which is positive definite and proper.

  • The Newtom method and the quasi-Newton method for solving equations of smooth compositions of semismooth functions are proposed. The Q-superlinear convergence of the Newton method and the Q-linear convergence of the quasi-Newton method are proved. The present methods can be more easily implemeted than previous ones for this class of nonsmooth equations.

  • To force an aircraft to track the specified path, the generation of the smooth desired trajectory is essential. In this paper, the cubic spline function is used to generate the trajectory which passes through the specified intercept points. The simulation results show that the desired trajectory generated by the spline interpolation is very smooth and the aircraft tracks it with small position errors.

  • Effect of post treatment on the fatigue strength of a box weldment was investigated in order to improve fatigue life of the weldment. The post treatment applied were the smooth grinding of weld bead, weld toe grinding and hammer peening at the weld toe. The fatigue strength of the weldment after post treatment clearly increased, compared with that of the weldment in as-welded condition. After smooth grinding of weld bead, fatigue crack initiated at the root of the weldment, while fatigue crack initiated at the weld toe for the other methods.

  • Geosynthetics are widely used in landfill for filtration, drainage, separation and so on. For many landfill failure cases, interfaces of geosynthetics can be potential failure surfaces. Therefore, it is very Important to estimate the interface properties of geosynthetics. In this study, shaking table tests were peformed between smooth geomembrane and geotextile. From the test results, it was found that there is a limited acceleration that can be transmitted from smooth geomembrane to geotextile. And the influence of normal stress and frequencies of excitation were discussed.

  • Rapid Prototyping(RP) systems, that fabricate objects with slicers, typically bear staircase artifacts when slices has a certain degree of thickness. A tangential cutting algorithm is developed in order to remove surface distortion as well as to generate smooth laser-cutting trajectory. For this, an energy function is defined with tangential line length and distance between tangential line and middle contour. Then, the energy is minimized to generate effective tangential line segments. The proposed algorithm is tested and verified on 3D object samples and the results show that the generated tangential lines effectively approximate layer surface and make laser trajectory smooth.

  • It was reported in the Journal of KSME Vol. 15, No. 3 and No. 4, 1975 that could be finished the best smooth surface by applying frictional work to the metal surface. Even if we can finish the best smooth surface of methal, it is not available when it has not anti-wear. Present study tried to investigate the anti-wear and the characteristics of frictional worked surface by using the sliding contact between plain bearing of brass and frictional worked jornal of mild steel. The results were compared with the case of ground journal.

  • We consider a model of population dynamics whose mortality function is unbounded. We note that the regularity of the solution depends on the growth rate of the mortality near the maximum age. We propose Gauss-Legendre methods along the characteristics to approximate the solution when the solution is smooth enough. It is proven that the scheme is convergent at fourth-order rate in the maximum norm. We also propose discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods to approximate the solution which is not smooth enough. The stability of the method is discussed. Several numerical examples are presented.
