This paper presents the architecture design, implement, experimental validation of a bistatic backscatter wireless communication system in Wi-Fi network. The operating principle is to communicate a tag's data by detecting the power level of the power modulated Wi-Fi packets to be reflected or absorbed by backscatter tag, in interconnecting with Wi-Fi device and Wi-Fi AP. This system is able to provide the identification and sensor data of tag on the internet connectivity without requiring extra device for reading data, because this uses an existing Wi-Fi AP infrastructure. The backscatter tag consists of Wi-Fi energy harvesting part and a backscatter transmitter/a power-detecting receiver part. This tag can operate by harvesting and generating energy from Wi-Fi signal power. Wi-Fi device decodes information of the tag data by recognizing the power level of the backscattered Wi-Fi packets. Wi-Fi device receives the backscattered Wi-Fi packets and generates the tag's data pattern in the time-series of channel state information (CSI) values. We believe that this system can be achieved wireless connectivity for ultra- low-power IoT and wearable device.

In this paper, we're compared network protocol which is network lifetime longer when using LEACH Protocol, SEP, and TEEN in a heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network with a Large Sensor Area. Also, we propose a method of divided layer the wide-area sensor filed and transmitting a multi-hop to improve the network lifetime. And we're compared network protocol which is network lifetime more improved apply the proposed method to LEACH Protocol, SEP, and TEEN. We tried to compare results, TEEN showed the best network lifetime. Apply the proposed method to divided the sensor field, L-TEEN (Layered TEEN)'s network lifetime rates of improvement is highest.

As an energy network infrastructure, which is capable of integrating energy related services such as AMR/AMI, Smart Grid, and Smart Water Grid, the Smart Utility Network (SUN) enables a paradigm shift from user-oriented networks to device-oriented networks. The SUN has some similarities to sensor networks in application and network requirements. Therefore it is required to investigate and analyze thoroughly existing related work in advance to design new network protocols for SUN. In this paper we analyze service requirements and design considerations for SUN and then present a design guideline of new network protocols for SUN by investigating existing low power protocols, data aggregation methods, and in-network storages.

Recent improvements on the quality, fidelity and availability of biometric data have led to effective human physical activity detection (HPAD) in real time which adds significant value to applications such as human behavior identification, healthcare monitoring, and user authentication. Current approaches usually use machine-learning techniques for human physical activity recognition based on the data collected from wearable accelerometer sensor from a single wearable smart device on the user. However, collecting data from a single wearable smart device may not provide the complete user activity data as it is usually attached to only single part of the user's body. In addition, in case of the absence of the single sensor, then no data can be collected. Hence, in this paper, a continuous HPAD will be presented to effectively perform user activity detection with mobile service infrastructure using multiple wearable smart devices, namely smartphone and smartwatch placed in various locations on user's body for more accurate HPAD. A case study on a comprehensive dataset of classified human physical activities with our HAPD approach shows substantial improvement in HPAD accuracy.
Recently, the smart sensor technologies are rapidly developing in accordance with the technology of implementation in small-size, low-cost, and low power consumption. With these sensor technologies, especially with MEMS and NEMS, the researches on the WSN are actively performing. For the WSN, a network security function is essential even it requires high physical resource level. But the WSN with the smart sensor technologies could not be provided with enough resources for the function because of limited size, computing-power, low-power, and etc. In this paper, we introduce security and key-management protocols of WSN.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are becoming widely used in collecting and sensing information in different fields such as in the medical area, smart phone industry and military environment. The main concern here is reducing the power consumption because it effects in the lifetime of wireless sensor during commutation because it may be work in some environment like sensor in the battlefields where is not easy to change the battery for a node and that may decrease the efficiency of that node and that may affect the network traffic may be interrupted because one or more nodes stop working. In this paper we implement, simulate, and investigate S-MAC protocol with mobility support and show the sequence of events the sender and receiver go through. We tested some parameters and their impacts of on the performance including System throughput, number of packets successfully delivered per second, packet delay, average packet delay before successful transmission.
Testing and validation processes are critical tasks in developing a new hardware platform based on a new technology. This paper describes a series of experiments to evaluate the performance of a newly developed MEMS-based wireless sensor node as part of a wireless sensor network (WSN). The sensor node consists of a sensor board with four accelerometers, a thermometer and filtering and digitization units, and a MICAz mote for control, local computation and communication. The experiments include calibration and linearity tests for all sensor channels on the sensor boards, dynamic range tests to evaluate their performance when subjected to varying excitation, noise characteristic tests to quantify the noise floor of the sensor board, and temperature tests to study the behavior of the sensors under changing temperature profiles. The paper also describes a large-scale deployment of the WSN on a long-span suspension bridge, which lasted over three months and continuously collected ambient vibration and temperature data on the bridge. Statistical modal properties of a bridge tower are presented and compared with similar estimates from a previous deployment of sensors on the bridge and finite element models.

A wireless passive sensor network is a network consisting of sink nodes, sensor nodes, and radio frequency (RF) sources, where an RF source transfers energy to sensor nodes by radiating RF waves, and a sensor node transmits data by consuming the received energy. Against theoretical expectations, a wireless passive sensor network suffers from many practical difficulties: scarcity of energy, non-simultaneity of energy reception and data transmission, and inefficiency in allocating time resources. Perceiving such difficulties, we propose a simple contending-type medium access control (MAC) scheme for many sensor nodes to deliver packets to a sink node. Then, we derive an approximate expression for the network-wide throughput attained by the proposed MAC scheme. Also, we present an approximate expression for the optimal partition, which maximizes the saturated network-wide throughput. Numerical examples confirm that each of the approximate expressions yields a highly precise value for network-wide throughput and finds an exactly optimal partition.
This paper introduces a prototype smart home environment that is built in the research building to demonstrate the feasibility of a robot-assisted future home environment. Localization, navigation, object recognition and handling are core functionalities that an intelligent service robot should provide. A huge amount of research effort has been made to make the service robot perform these functions with its own sensors, actuators and a knowledge base. With all complicated configuration of sensors, actuators and a database, the robot could only perform the given tasks in a predefined environment or show the limited capabilities in a natural environment. We started a smart home environment for service robots for simple service robots to provide reliable services by communicating with the environment through the wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we introduce various types of smart devices that are developed for assisting the robot in the environment by providing sensor and actuator capabilities. In addition, we present how the devices are integrated to constitute the smart home environment for service robots.
