  • A new method that estimates the sensing ability of HH smart sensor is proposed. The new signal processing method have been developed that can distinguish among different materials relatively. The HH smart sensor was developed far recognition of materials. The HH smart sensor was made for experiment. Then, it was estimated the ability to recognize objects according to acceleration value. The sensing ability of HH smart sensor has been estimated with the $R_{SAI}$ method. Experiments and analysis were executed to estimate the ability to recognize objects according to acceleration value changing. Dynamic characteristics of HH smart sensor were evaluated relatively through a new $R_{SAI}$ method that uses the power spectrum density. Applications of this method are for finding abnormal conditions of objects (auto-manufacturing), feeling of objects (medical product), robotics, safety diagnosis of structure, etc.

  • The smart sensor technology has opened new horizons for assessing and monitoring structural health of civil infrastructure. Smart sensor's unique features such as onboard computation, wireless communication, and cost effectiveness can enable a dense network of sensors that is essential for accurate assessment of structural health in large-scale civil structures. While most research efforts to date have been focused on realizing wireless smart sensor networks (WSSN) on bridge structures, relatively less attention is paid to applying this technology to buildings. This paper presents a decentralized damage detection using the WSSN for building structures. An existing flexibility-based damage detection method is extended to be used in the decentralized computing environment offered by the WSSN and implemented on MEMSIC's Imote2 smart sensor platform. Numerical simulation and laboratory experiment are conducted to validate the WSSN for decentralized damage detection of building structures.

  • In this study, a smart sensor unit is developed by using the smart sensor technology that is being rapidly developed in recent years for structural health monitoring system, and its performance is evaluated through various experiments, and also, damage detection experiment is performed on a model structure. This paper as the first half of this study contains the development and performance evaluation of the smart sensor. In the latter half of this study, structure damage detection experiment is performed for the application of verified smart sensor unit into structural health monitoring, and it is compared with a wire measurement system. The smart sensor is developed by using high-power wireless modem, MEMS Sensor and AVR microcontroller, and an embedded program is also developed for the control and operation of the sensor unit. To verify the performance of the smart sensor, many experiments are performed for sensitivity and resolution analysis tests, data acquisition by using cantilever beam and shaker, and on-site application using actual bridge. As a result, the smart sensor proves to be satisfactory in its performance.

  • This paper deals with civil infrastructures in general, sensor and smart structure technology, and smart steel structures in particular. Smart structures technology, an integrated engineering field comprising sensor technology, structural control, smart materials and structural health monitoring, could dramatically transform and revolutionize the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering structures. The central core of this technology is sensor and sensor networks that provide the essential data input in real time for condition assessment and decision making. Sensors and robust monitoring algorithms that can reliably detect the occurrence, location, and severity of damages such as crack and corrosion in steel structures will lead to increased levels of safety for civil infrastructure, and may significantly cut maintenance or repair cost through early detection. The emphasis of this paper is on sensor technology with a potential use in steel structures.

  • There are several sensors in the liquid cargo ship. In the liquid cargo ship, we can get values from various sensors that are level sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, oxygen sensor, VOCs sensor, high overfill sensor, etc. It is important to guarantee the reliability of sensors. In order to guarantee the reliability of sensors, we have to study the diagnosis of sensor fault. The technology of smart sensor is widely used. In this paper, the technology of smart sensor is applied to diagnosis of level sensor fault for liquid cargo ship. In order to diagnose sensor fault and find the sensor position, in this paper, we proposed algorithms of diagnosis of sensor fault using independent sensor diagnosis unit and self fault diagnosis using sensor modeling. Proposed methods are demonstrated by experiment and simulation. The results show that the proposed approach is useful. Proposed methods are useful to develop smart level sensor.

  • Since the late 1990, "Smart clothing" has been developed in a various way to meet user centered design and human engineering that considered usability, wearability with clothing. Under this circumstance, research and development of smart clothing has been demanded usability and wearability test. But, Study of the usability evaluation for sensor based smart clothing is insufficient. In this study, we suggest criterion of usability evaluation for sensor based smart clothing that evaluate on the point of view such as wearability of clothing, interaction of clothing and devices, interaction of body and devices. we performed qualitative and quantitative test with developed smart clothing to present usability evaluation criterion for sensor based smart clothing. As a result, total 7 categories such as 'usefulness', 'wearability', 'appearance', 'riskness', 'facility of management', 'perceived change', were extracted as the usability and wearability criterion. Additionally, 28 factors of evaluation criterion for sensor based smart clothing were indicated on the result of this research. This study have meaning to indicate usability evaluation criterion for sensor based smart clothing.

  • Recently various types of disaster monitoring system using smart-phones are under active studying. In this paper, we propose a system that automatically performs the disaster and fire detection. Additionally we implement the Arduino-based smart image sensor system in the web platform. When a fire is detected, an SMS is sent to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. In order to improve fire detection probability, we proposed a smart Arduino fire detection sensor simulation which searches the smart sensor inference algorithm using fuzzy rules.

  • The purpose of web-sensor is to transmit the measured sensor data and the related information to remote user. Since the user exists at remote place, the sensor information must be trustworthy, and the diagnosis for sensors should be easy to handle. To make sure of these issues, IEEE 1451 for smart sensor had been presented in the past. This research proposes the smart web sensor. The proposed smart web sensor is based on IEEE 1451.0, therefore most of the sensor interfaces are able to be used, and could realize the smart sensor by using TEDS information. Also it has the user-friendly web-service by using XML so that the remote user can handle easily the every possible information related to sensor. This research presents reference model for smart web sensor, and to prove how valuable it is, web-service using gas sensor is implemented.
