  • In this paper, a design for a fully digital voltage sensor using a 32-nm fin-type field-effect transistor (FinFET) is presented. A new characteristic of the double gate p-type FinFET (p-FinFET) is examined and proven appropriate for sensing voltage variations. On the basis of this characteristic, a novel technique for designing low-power voltage-to-time converters is presented. Then, we develop a digital voltage sensor with a voltage range of 0.7 to 1.1V at a 50-mV resolution. The performance of the proposed sensor is evaluated under a range of voltages and process variations using Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE) simulations, and the sensor is proven capable of operating under ultra-low power consumption, high linearity, and fairly high-frequency conditions (i.e., 100 MHz).

  • In this study, we designed the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and heat radiation properties of shunt fixed resistors by adjusting the atomic composition of a metal alloy resistor, and fabricated a resistor that satisfied the designed properties. Resistors with similar atomic composition of copper and nickel showed low TCR and excellent shunt fixed resistor properties such as short-time overload, rated load, humidity load, and high temperature load. Finally, we expect that improved sensor accuracy will be obtained in current-distribution-type shunt fixed resistor for IoT sensors by designing the atomic composition of the metal alloy resistor proposed in this work.

  • Piezoelectric materials have been widely used in ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT). PZT ceramics can be used to receive and generate surface acoustic waves. It is a common application to attach PZT transducers to the surface of structures for detecting cracks in nondestructive testing. However, not until recently have piezoelectric polymers attracted more and more attention to be the material for interdigitated (IDT) surface and guided-wave transducers. In this paper, an interdigitated gold-on-polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer for actuating and sensing Lamb waves has been introduced. A specific etching technology is employed for making the surface electrodes into a certain finger pattern, the spacings of which yield different single mode responses of Lamb waves. Experiments have been performed on steel and carbon fiber composite plates. Results from PVDF IDT sensors have been compared with those from PZT transducers for verification.

  • This paper describes the area of intelligent systems research as funded by the Civil and Mechanical Systems (CMS) Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). With developments in computer science, information technology, sensing and control the design of typical machines and structures by civil and mechanical engineers is evolving toward intelligent systems that can sense, decide and act. This trend toward electro-mechanical design is well-established in modern machines (e.g. vehicles, robots, disk drives) and often referred to as mechatronics. More recently intelligent systems design is becoming an important aspect of structures, such as buildings and bridges. We briefly review recent developments in structural control, including the role that NSF has played in their development, and discuss on-going CMS activities in this area. In particular, we highlight the interdisciplinary initiative on Sensors and Sensor Networks and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). NEES is a distributed cyberinfrastructure to support earthquake engineering research, and provides the pioneering NEES grid computing environment for simulation, teleoperation, data collection and archiving, etc.

  • With the proliferation of smart devices, applications under ubiquitous environment must provide transparent access to computer resources. However, existing u-Logistics systems can not properly react on such requirements, because the status information of objects is input only in fixed milestones by system's operators. In this paper, we introduce an event notification service suitable for u-Logistics environment. The system is based on RFID infrastructure and provides real-time tracking by combining the event of objects with location information received from GPS satellites. The system also provides a graphical user interface based on a state/transition approach, making it easy that clients facilitate definition of profile, and uses XML structure to more easily represent and exchange events.

  • Optical fiber Brillouin sensor in a coil winding setup is proposed in this paper to measure the expansion deformation of a concrete column with a central rebar subjected to accelerated corrosion. The optical sensor monitored the whole dynamic corrosion process from initial deformation to final cracking. Experimental results show that Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR) can accurately measure the strain values and identify the crack locations of the simulated reinforced concrete (RC) column. A theoretical model is used to calculate the RC corrosion expansive pressure and crack length. The results indicate that the measured strain and cracking history revealed the development of the steel bar corrosion inside the simulated RC column.

  • New active "intelligent" structural systems with integrated self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities can lead to a new design dimension for the next generation high-performance structures and mechanical systems. However, temperature effects to the piezoelectric transducers are not fully understood. This paper is concerned with a mathematical modeling and analysis of a laminated piezothermoelastic cylindrical shell composite exposed to mechanical, electric, and thermal fields. Generic shell equations and solution procedures are derived. Contributions of spatial and time components in the mechanical, electric, and temperature excitations are discussed, and their analytical solutions derived. A laminated cylindrical shell composite with fully distributed piezoelectric layers is used in a case study; its multi-field step and impulse responses are investigated. Analyses suggest that the fully distributed actuators are insensitive to even modes due to load averaging and cancellation. Accordingly, these even modes are filtered from the total response and only the modes that are combinations of m = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ and n = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ participating in dynamic response of the shell.

  • In this paper, a particular application of digital photos, remote sensing, remote shooting air moving, high-resolution and high compression of medical images required by remote shooting of JPEG2000 standard applied in the field of hardware design, production was implemented. JPEG2000 standard for image compression using the software implementation of the processing speed is very slow compared to conventional JPEG disadvantages, and also the standard of JPEG2000 DWT (Discrete wavelet transform) to improve the level of compression for image data if processing speed is a phenomenon that has degraded. In order to solve these JPEG2000 compression / decompression groups were designed and applied. In this paper, the optimal JPEG2000 compression / reservoir hardware by changing the level for still image compression, faster computation speed and quality has shown improvement.

In this paper, we propose a technology to transmit data wirelessly by sensing information such as battery discharge value, acceleration, and temperature by attaching RF sensor to a drone. The purpose of this paper is to design and develop the monitoring technology of agriculture drone battery usage in real time using RF sensor. In this paper, we propose a monitoring system that can check real time data of battery changed value, temperature, and acceleration during pesticide control activity of agricultural drone.
