Smart City Policies Revisited: Considerations for a Truly Smart and Sustainable Urbanism Practice

  • The notion of smart cities, presently, is a highly popular topic in urban policy circles. This concept is adopted by many cities across the world-with an aim of increasing urban smartness in various ways and areas. Productivity, innovation, liveability, wellbeing, accessibility, sustainability, governance, planning, and citizen participation are among these areas. Despite good policy intentions, smart city initiatives in practice had only limited impact in delivering the desired urban outcomes. This paper aims to investigate the smart city phenomenon and its planning practice approaches from an evolutionary perspective. The study places smart city plans and strategies of a number of cities across the globe under the microscope. The findings reveal that current smart city efforts are not adequate to combat the challenges of the Anthropocene epoch-that is already upon us. This paper concludes with a consolidated definition of smart and sustainable cities and considerations for moving towards Post-Anthropocentric urbanism-that is truly smart and sustainable urbanism-to avoid an imminent urban ecocide.

Does Green Image of the Franchise Lunchbox Brand Prompt Consumer Loyalty? : The Serial Mediation Effects of Brand Trust and Attachment

  • Purpose: As social interest in environmental issues increases, pro-environmental initiatives are becoming more active in many industry sectors. This study explores how a firm's perceived green brand image affects consumer loyalty through brand trust and attachment. Research design, data, and methodology: The data of 363 respondents aged 20 to 59 who purchased the franchise lunchbox in the last three months were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and SmartPLS 4.0. Result: Green brand image affects consumer loyalty through cognitive trust, affective trust, and brand attachment. Regarding serial mediations, cognitive trust affects brand attachment only through affective trust and, in turn, consumer loyalty. Conclusions: This study employs the hierarchy of effects theory to explore the role of the perceived green image of the franchise lunchbox brand in prompting consumer loyalty through brand trust and attachment. The eco-friendly initiatives are imperative in establishing a green brand image, given their critical roles in generating consumer brand trust and attachment as well as consumer loyalty in the franchise lunchbox industry. The franchise lunchbox firms should implement environmental initiatives and effectively communicate and actively inform these initiatives to raise perceptions of green brand image and build cognitive brand trust.

Data Sharing in a Smart Tourism Destination: Analyzing the Case of Sapporo Using the Concept of Coopetition

  • Data plays an ever greater part in the tourism industry. While the platform-based sharing of open public data, private-sector intermediary platforms, and the use of social media to understand consumer trends are already well recognized, more potential for innovation exists in sharing private data among organizations in Smart Tourism Destinations. Research into the factors enabling and hindering coopetition in this kind of data sharing platforms is still in the nascent stage of development. Our case study of Sapporo, a major Japanese city endeavouring to create itself as a Smart Tourism Destination, sheds light on the initial approaches to involve organizations to such a data sharing agreement. Founding on seven interviews with ten participants of Sapporo Smart City project organization (SARD), we derived enablers and impediments that promote coopetition in data sharing as part of Smart Tourism Destination development. We also present practical recommendations and future research opportunities for such initiatives.

This paper reviews current energy policies of the USA and the current trends in research and development efforts, for sustainable and renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the recent topic of IEEE's Smart Grid initiatives is discussed, and its role in the dielectrics and electrical insulation research is presented.

  • In developing countries especially in African continent, rapid population growth in cities is a major concern. Majority of governments in Africa have made more effort to develop urban areas as compared to the rural ones. Social and economic activities are more concentrated in urban areas. This is a pushing factor for the rapid population growth in cities as many people, especially young generation, tend to migrate from rural to urban. This growth leads to excessive exploitation of natural resources, environmental degradation and increased pressure on social services. Rapid increased population acts as an encouragement to construct smart cities for achieving needs for present and future generations. Tanzania as one of the developing countries in Africa has taken initiatives in establishing smart cities. The aim of this study therefore, is to examine opportunities and challenges in the development of Smart cities in Tanzania with a case study of Mbeya city. In addition, conceptualization about development of smart cities is proposed to prioritize the planning of smart grid among other smart city infrastructure systems. Conclusively, Mbeya city has a full potential of many strengths and opportunities for successful development as a smart city.

How to Apply Smart Tourism Characteristics to Hotel Management

  • Purpose: With the growth of the hospitality industry, it is imperative to identify how smart tourism characteristics may be used in hotel management. Current and emerging technologies such as analytic tools, automation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) help to create value for the guests while also contributing to waste reduction, resource optimization, and increased profitability in the industry. Research design, data and methodology: The literature review was conducted to examine a broad scope of research in analyzing smart tourism characteristics for the improved management of hotels and establish the necessary background for this issue. The analysis was employed to specify the systematic approach of selecting, scrutinizing, and integrating the source of information. Results: According to the systematic literature analysis, four smart tourism characteristics have been established, which can improve various aspects of hotel management. They are as follows: (1) Smart Guest Experience Management, (2) Smart Operations and Resource Management, (3) Smart Customer Relationship Management, and (4) Smart Destination Management. Conclusions: The findings expose the radical approach that smart tourism characteristics take towards the management of hotels. The developments in IT and science-oriented solutions have opened greater opportunities as the hotel industry can enhance clients' satisfaction, productivity, and participation in environmental conservation initiatives for tourism.

  • Purpose: Smart city has been observed to benefit most urban areas in different nations. Despite its advantages in the promotion of environmental sustainability and improving business competency in the current context, various literature review papers should be introduced to analyze its drawbacks. The present research aims to provide valuable suggestions for sustainable smart cities development. Research design, data and methodology: Using the qualitative content analysis (QCA), the current author could understand the target audience's motivations and habits by gathering data. This implies that the author may predict the kinds of future initiatives. As a result, the current researcher could ensure developed pertinent research questions and a well-planned method for analyzing the replies. Results: The implementation of green city development suggests encouraging the greening of public spaces and reducing heat from the atmosphere caused by the emission of gases from vehicles and companies. Smart cities are offering a new industrial paradigm that is based on the convergence of information technology. Conclusions: The projection illustrates that most people are migrating to the cities, which calls for an immediate transformation to overcome the immense pressure of making the city accessible, sustainable, prosperous, and safer. Therefore, implementing smart cities within the current world promotes efficiency and increases business sustainability.

Platform Business and Value Creation: Using Public Open Data (플랫폼 비즈니스와 가치 창출: 개방형 공공데이터 활용)

  • Variety of data have been opened or connected by several levels of government. In smart city initiatives, open data become the source of a new business model. This paper is to foster ways of public open data (POD) by analyzing the start-up company that utilizes POD. In order to fulfill it, this paper adapts the case study research. Findings say that POD has potential to validate and further enrich the platform business. But to find which types of public open data are most prevalent is insufficient. To do this, it is more needed that sophisticated and many cases should be examined. However, this paper shows that platform business by using POD could lead to reduce the cost and increase the benefits for both providers and customers. From the findings, this paper shows that public open data has an important role not only to boost new venture creations which are prevalent ways of smart city but also to foster different platforms enabling new value capture and creation according to development of internet of things based on ICT technology.

Exploratory Research on the Success Factors and Challenges of Smart City Projects

  • As urbanization and its consequences become the issue of modern cities, the concept of Smart City comes as the solution. Though a lot of researches on the topic is done, still no clear definition is given for both: Smart City itself and the factors of a successful Smart City. While most of the literature centers the role of ICT it is not a sufficient condition for a city to become Smart; the role of intellectual capital is underestimated. Using a collection of Smart City definitions across the time and providing concrete cases, this research seeks to bridge definition gaps and creates a tool for understanding Smart Cities. Drawing on the findings of several case studies, this research derives several explanatory factors. The citizen's engagement and governance are identified as the two key success factors of Smart City Projects along with ICT and other factors as enablers. The research has purpose as follows: 1) To bridge definition gaps of the "Smart City" by defining the term "Smart City," based on existing concepts and characteristic mechanisms across times.; 2) To develop an analytical tool for Smart City success factors through Explanatory Variables.; and 3) To identify major challenges and barriers of Smart City Projects implementations and to provide recommendations and solutions, based on existing governmental initiatives and pilot projects. The research contributes to the knowledge of smart cities and ICT integration for urbanization issues solution. By applying the findings of this research at the managerial level stakeholders may benefit by getting higher efficiency of the Smart City Projects and by utilizing knowledge and values of a Smart City Projects in a prioritized way.

Suggestions for Building 'Smart Campus' Based on Case Studies on the Effectiveness of Instructions with Smart-Pads (스마트 패드 활용수업 사례분석에 기반한 스마트 캠퍼스 구축 발전방향)

  • According to recent trends of ubiquitous learning with the advent of smart devices, this study was to suggest for the successful achievement of "Smart Campus" initiatives by experiencing an instruction with smart-pads (tablet PCs) in a university. A pilot project was conducted as a part of building a Smart Campus in S university in Gyeong-gi Province in Korea for the study. The class was held in the Summer semester in 2011 with six participants. Using research methodologies such as semi-structured interviews and stimulated recall, perceived academic performances, satisfaction, and the usability of smart-pads were analysed. Main results included high perceived academic performances, satisfaction, and the usability, however, some negative responses also detected on the variables. Based on the results, it was suggested that specific instructional strategies should be developed in terms of hardware, software and humanware.
