The HTS power cable is composed of 2 layers for transmission and 1 layer for shield. The superconducting tapes of transmission layers and shield layer are wound in a cylindrical shape with a winding pitch. The radius of cylinder and the number of superconducting tapes are decided considering to the transmission current capacity and the critical current of superconducting tapes. The increasement of transmission current capacity will increase in volume of HTS cable system. In this paper, the composition method of supercondcuting power cable using the multi-cable is presented. The coated conductor tape can be wound on the smaller cylinder because it has the smaller critical bending diameter than the BSCCO tape. A small-scale cable was composed using the coated conductor tapes and a multi-cable is composed using a small-scale cable considering to transmission current capacity. Even increase of transmission current capacity, this method has advantage that the HTS superconducting power cable can be composed easily. The 22.9 kV and 154 kV superconducting power cable was composed using the presented method.

A small scale joint sample of Nb3Sn CICC was fabricated by sub-cable to sub-cable joining. This joint was produced by parallel insertion of one end of each sub-cable into the sub-cable space of the other side of cable, which can decrease the equivalent electrical resistance at the joint is expected to have average properties, dc resistance and ac losses, in view of the shapes of ITER type joint and strand to strand joint. The 3.8nOhm of dc resistance was measured in the range of 10-200A transport current. The normalized resistivity of the joint was about 6.7 $\mu}$Ohm-$^mm{2}$. Considering the normalized resistivity, the full scale joint prepared by sub-cable to sub-cable joining may have similar joint dc resistance with other conventional full scale joints with a shorter joining length.

In this study, a finite element(FE) analysis on electro-mechanical impedance response of cable-anchor connection interface under various anchor force is presented. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, an interface washer coupled with piezoelectric(PZT) material is designed for monitoring cable-force loss. The interface washer is a small aluminum plate on which a PZT patch is surface-bonded. Cable-force loss could be monitored by installing the interface washer between the anchor plate and the anchorage of cable-anchor connection and examining the changes of impedance of the interface washer. Secondly, a FE model for cable-anchor connection is established to examine the effect of cable-force on impedance response of interface washer. Also, the effects of geometrical and material properties of the interface washer on impedance responses under various cable-forces are investigated. Finally, validation of the FE analysis is experimentally evaluated by a lab-scale cable-anchor connection.

Due to the self-equilibrium status of the cable system, the loss of the tensioning in the cable system results in other cables carrying larger tension forces than those initially calculated by structural engineers. Also, turn-buckle systems, which have been widely used to pre-tension and/or re-tension the cables, are limited to use for small cables and to provide a rough estimation for tension forces. In this study, the re-tensioning cable connection systems were developed to overcome the problems mentioned above. The main objective of the proposed system is to re-tension large cables and measure the exact amount of tension forces of the cable systems. This connection system is also combined with the wireless signal monitoring module so that engineers are able to measure the tension forces any place where the internet is available. This paper presents the development of the re-tensioning cable connection systems and experiment using the real-scale cable systems to verify the fe-tensioning and signal monitoring systems.

Vibration mitigation of cables or hangers is one of the crucial problems for cable supported bridges. Previous research focused on the behaviors of cable with dampers or crossties, which could help engineering community apply these mitigation devices more efficiently. However, less studies are available for hybrid applied cross-ties and dampers, especially lack of both analytical and experimental verifications. This paper studied damping and frequency of two parallel identical cables with a connection cross-tie and an attached damper. The characteristic equation of system was derived based on transfer matrix method. The complex characteristic equation was numerically solved to find the solutions. Effects of non-dimensional spring stiffness and location on the maximum cable damping, the corresponding optimum damper constant and the corresponding frequency of lower vibration mode were further addressed. System with twin small-scale cables with a cross-link and a viscous damper were tested. The damping and frequency from the test were very close to the analytical ones. The two branches of solutions: in-phase modes and the out-of-phase modes, were identified; and the two branches of solutions were different for damping and frequency behaviors.
The aerodynamic damping is an essential factor that can considerably affect the dynamic response of the cable-stayed bridge induced by crosswind load. However, developing an accurate and efficient aerodynamic damping model is crucial for evaluating the crosswind load-induced response on cable-stayed bridges. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for identifying aerodynamic damping of the bridge structures under crosswind load using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the particle filter (PF) algorithm. The EKF algorithm is introduced to capture the aerodynamic damping ratio. PF technique is used to select the optimal spectral representation of the noise. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed solution were investigated through full-scale vibration measurement data of the crosswind-induced on the bridge's girder. The results show that the proposed solution can generate an efficient and robust estimation. The errors between the target and extracted values are around 0.01mm and 0.003^o, respectively, for the vertical and torsional motion. The relationship between the amplitude and the aerodynamic damping ratio is linear for small reduced wind velocity and nonlinear with the increasing value of the reduced wind velocity. Finally, the results show the influence of the level of noise.

This paper describes the shaping formation and the erection of SCST structure by cable-tensioning. It could be a fast and economical method for constructing the space structure consisted with uniform pyramids by cable-tensioning of the cable in bottom chords. In the initial layout, the top chords and web members are left at their true length, the bottom chords are given gaps in proportion to the desired final shape. The feasibility of the proposed shaping method and the reliability of the established geometric model were confirmed with nonlinear finite element analysis and an experimental investigation on small scale and full size test models. As a result, the behaviour characteristic of MERO joint is very significant in shaping analysis of space structure. This study suggests the most reasonable modeling technique for the prediction of shaping in practices. And it is shown the characteristic of the behavior in shaping test for practical design purposes.
Transmission tower-line systems are commonly slender and generally possess a small stiffness and low structural damping. They are prone to impulsive excitations induced by cable rupture and may experience strong vibration. Excessive deformation and vibration of a transmission tower-line system subjected to cable rupture may induce a local destruction and even failure event. A little work has yet been carried out to evaluate the performance of transmission tower-line systems in mountain areas subjected to cable rupture. In addition, the control for cable rupture induced vibration of a transmission tower-line system has not been systematically conducted. In this regard, the dynamic response analysis of a transmission tower-line system in mountain areas subjected to cable rupture is conducted. Furthermore, the feasibility of using viscous fluid dampers to suppress the cable rupture-induced vibration is also investigated. The three dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of a transmission tower-line system is first established and the mathematical model of a mountain is developed to describe the equivalent scale and configuration of a mountain. The model of a tower-line-mountain system is developed by taking a real transmission tower-line system constructed in China as an example. The mechanical model for the dynamic interaction between the ground and transmission lines is proposed and the mechanical model of a viscous fluid damper is also presented. The equations of motion of the transmission tower-line system subjected to cable rupture without/with viscous fluid dampers are established. The field measurement is carried out to verify the analytical FE model and determine the damping ratios of the example transmission tower-line system. The dynamic analysis of the tower-line system is carried out to investigate structural performance under cable rupture and the validity of the proposed control approach based on viscous fluid dampers is examined. The made observations demonstrate that cable rupture may induce strong structural vibration and the implementation of viscous fluid dampers with optimal parameters can effectively suppress structural responses.
In a cable yarding system, a small-scale tower yarder attached to a farm tractor wasdeveloped and used for small-diameter tree harvesting operations. Based on this design, improvement of traction performance was required for medium- and large-diameter tree harvesting operations. In this study, the mechanical transmission employed for the tower yarder was modified into ahydro-mechanical transmission system. Maximum traction forces, including tractor engine speed and hydraulic power pressure, were investigated, and comparisons were made between the mechanical and hydro-mechanical transmission systems. Six tractor engine speeds (1,200, 1,400, 1,600, 1,800, 2,000, and 2,200) and three levels of power transmission mechanism pressure (4.9, 6.9, and 8.8 MPa) were investigated in the two different transmission systems. Results showed a maximum traction force of 15,146.6 N at an engine rotation speed of 757 rpm in the current mechanical transmission system, and 36,140.0 N at anengine rotation speed of 1,575 rpm in the modified hydro-mechanical transmission system. The maximum traction forces for the hydro-mechanical transmission were 2.4 times greater than those of the mechanical transmission, and may therefore be applicable to medium and large-diameter tree harvesting operations. Thus,as a modified version of the conventional transmission system, the new hydro-mechanical transmission system may be cost-effective for use in large-scale cable yarding operations. In the future, however, it will be necessary to investigate problems that may arise from field application tests.

A new design of distributed crack sensors based on the topological change of transmission line cables is presented for the condition assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures during and immediately after an earthquake event. This study is primarily focused on the performance of cable sensors under dynamic loading, particularly a feature that allows for some "memory" of the crack history of an RC member. This feature enables the post-earthquake condition assessment of structural members such as RC columns, in which the earthquake-induced cracks are closed immediately after an earthquake event due to gravity loads, and are visually undetectable. Factors affecting the onset of the feature were investigated experimentally with small-scale RC beams under cyclic loading. Test results indicated that both crack width and the number of loading cycles were instrumental in the onset of the memory feature of cable sensors. Practical issues related to dynamic acquisition with the sensors are discussed. The sensors were proven to be fatigue resistant from shake table tests of RC columns. The sensors continued to show useful performance after the columns can no longer support additional loads.
