Runoff characteristics of organic matters and nutrients from greenhouse site in paddy field area (논 지역 시설재배지에서의 유기물 및 영양염류 유출 특성)

  • Runoff characteristics of organic matters and nutrients from greenhouse site in paddy field area were investigated during the irrigation period in 2004. The greenhouse selected which situated near the Nam river, Jinju, Korea used the ground water as the irrigation purpose. And, the rotating system of paddy field to upland was adapted as a cropping system which is a typical practice in this area. Various items such as total phosphorus(T-P), total nitrogen(T-N), dissolved oxygen(DO), BOD, etc. were observed to figure out the seasonal and spatial variation in the study sites. it was found that the risk of water pollution due to the contamination of nutrients in canals in green house sites, and their neighbouring small sized streams are much higher than those in ordinary paddy field areas. Further surveys and investigations are required to find out the counter measures to reduce water pollution occurred in greenhouse sites.

Analysis of Fundamental Properties of Cement Mortar with Change of Solid Contents of PC Type Maintenance System Water Reducing Agent (유지계 PC감수제의 고형분율 변화에 따른 시멘트 모르타르의 기초적 특성 분석)

  • This research aimed to analyze the fundamental properties of cement mortar accompanying the change of the solid contents of the maintenance type PC water reducing agent. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the properties of fresh mortar show a tendency to decrease as the solid contents decreases in the case of flow and air contents, and the decrease width with time is small. It was found that the compressive strength of the hardened mortar has almost no difference due to the change of the solid fraction.

Performance Evaluation of R435A on Refrigeration System of Water Purifiers (R435A를 적용한 정수기 냉동시스템의 성능평가)

  • In this study, thermodynamic performance of R435A is examined both numerically and experimentally in an effort to replace HFC134a used in the refrigeration system of domestic water purifiers. Even though HFC134a is used predominantly in such a system these days, it needs to be phased out in the near future in Europe and most of the developed countries due to its high global warming potential. To solve this problem, cycle simulation and experimental measurements are carried out with a new refrigerant mixture of 20%R152a/80%RE170 using actual domestic water purifiers. This mixture is numbered and listed as R435A by ASHRAE recently. Test results show that the system performance with R435A is greatly influenced by the amount of charge due to the small internal volume of the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers. With the optimum amount of charge of 21 to 22 grams, about 50% of HFC134a, the energy consumption of R435A is 11.8% lower than that of HFC134a. The compressor discharge temperature of R435A $8^{\circ}C$ lower than that of HFC134a at the optimum charge. Overall, R435A, a new long term environmentally safe refrigerant, is a good alternative for HFC134a requiring little change in the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers.

Analyzing the Effect of an Extreme Turbidity Flow Event on the Dam Reservoirs in North Han River Basin (북한강 수계 대규모 탁수사상 발생에 의한 댐 저수지의 탁수 영향 분석)

  • A long-term resuspension of small particles, called persistent turbidity, is one of the most important water quality concerns in the dam reservoirs system located in North Han River. Persistent turbidity may incur aesthetic nuisance and harmful effect on the ecosystem health, in addition to elevated water treatment costs for the drinking water supply to the Seoul metropolitan area. These sufferings have been more intensified as the strength and frequency of rainfall events increase by climate change in the basin. This study was to analyze the effect of an extreme turbidity flow event that occurred in 2006 on the serial reservoirs system (Soyang-Uiam-Cheongpyung-Paldang) in North Han River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model was set up and calibrated for the river and reservoirs system using the field data obtained in 2006 and 2007. The results showed that Soyang Reservoir released turbid water, which was classified as the TSS concentration is greater than 25 mg/L, for 334 days with peak TSS of 264.1 mg/L after the extreme flood event (592.7 mm) occurred between July 10 and 18 of 2006. The turbid water departed from Soyang Reservoir reached at the most downstream Paldang Reservoir after about 20 days and sustained for 41 days, which was validated with water treatment plant data. Since the released water from Soyang Reservoir had low water temperature and high TSS, an underflow formed in the downstream reservoirs and vertically mixed at Paldang Reservoir due to dilution by the sufficient inflow from South Han River.

Laser Peening Application for PWR Power Plants (비등수형 원자로 발전소에의 레이저 피닝 적용기술)

  • Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.

  • Recently, Stirling engines are emerging as a key device for power conversion of renewable energy or waste energy. This study develops a LTDSE(Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engine) using a water spray for higher heat transfer and performs load performance tests for various flow rates and temperatures of hot water spray for variable engine loads emulated by a mechanical friction device. Internal temperature and pressure, working frequency and inlet and outlet temperature of the supply water are measured. As a result, the increases in flow rate and temperature of hot water respectively enhance the power output, efficiency and the working frequency, while the increasing engine load leads to decreases in working frequency but increases in the pressure amplitude. Eventually, it is revealed there exists a maximum shaft power of the test engine.

Study on Damage Mechanism Analysis and Recovery Characteristic of the Large Scale Steam Turbine Cased by Water Induction (대형 증기터빈 물유입에 의한 손상메커니즘 분석과 원상복구특성 연구)

  • In this study, the damage mechanism of large scale steam turbine due to water induction was analyzed and recovery characteristics were reviewed. A turbine consists of the rotating rotor and the stationary casing, and the clearance between them is very small for the efficiency enhancement. If water induction, while relatively cold steam or water is introduced into turbine, occurs, the considerable humping is caused at the casing near the initial water induction point and that induces the rubbing between rotor and casing. Finally, it leads to the catastrophic failure. Bowed rotor has the different characteristics in the recovery depending on damage degree. The elastic deformation due to light rubbing is recovered by turning the rotor with 3 rpm under normal operation condition, but most plastic deformation due to rubbing deforms the local microstructure and that results in permanent deformation which could not be recovered under normal operation condition. Bowed rotor has diverse characteristics depending on the recovery method, and the method is empirical and needs the cutting edge technology. Careful recovery treatment of the rotor will eliminate the risks and secure the high quality rotor similar to new rotor. If any critical error is made during the recovery, the rotor would not be recovered permanently and it should be scrapped.
