A study on stream-groundwater exchange was performed using head and temperature data of stream water, streambed, and groundwater. Groundwater level and temperature were obtained from multi-depth monitoring wells in small-scale watershed. In the summer time, time series of temperatrue data at streambed and groundwater were monitored for three months. In the winter time, we measured the temperature gradient between stream water and streambed. The observed data showed three typical types of temperature characteristics. First, the temperature of streambed was lower than that of stream water; second, the temperature of streambed and stream water was similar; and last, the temperature of streambed was higher than that of stream water. The interconnections between the stream and the streambed were not homogeneously distributed due to weakly developed sediments and heterogeneous bedrock exposed as bed of the stream. The temperature data may be used in formal solutions of the inverse problems to estimate groundwater flow and hydraulic conductivity.
Reaeration coefficient is the physical absorption of oxygen from the atmosphere by water. It is the most important natural means by which a stream replaces the oxygen consumed in the biodegradation of organic wastes, and the rate constant describing this process is the reaeration coefficient, It. Reaeration coefficient is the dominant parameter affecting the use of water quality model. Therefore accurate estimation of the reaeration coefficient is essential for optimum water quality management. There is several method to estimate stream reaeration coefficient. In this study, it would be concluded that SI-peak method is of practical use when applied to small stream, and CRI method is adequate to large stream.
This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of heat pump system using water as a heat source and heat sink. The primary object in this study is the optimization of exergetic efficiency. Two different systems, 2-stream and 1-stream system, are analyzed in detail. Mass flow ratio (the ratio of mass flow rate of water through evaporator to that through condenser) is identified as the most important parameter to be optimized. It is shown that there exists an optimum mass flow ratio to maximize exergetic efficiency. The variation of optimum exergetic efficiency of 2-stream system is quite small and the value lies between 0.2∼0.23 for the range of investigation in this study. However, far better performance can be obtained from 1-stream system. This means considerable irreversibilities are generated through condenser of the 2-stream system. The effects of adiabatic efficiency of compressor-motor unit on the overall system performance are also examined in the analysis.
This study was performed for the analysis of the variation characteristics on riverbed according to the arrangement of stream. It was monitored of the variation progress of riverbed dependent on the elapsed time after the arrangement and It was studied that the hydraulic adjustment of the riverbed caused by the variation of the riverbed. The large amount of deposit just after the construction in which the riverbed was arranged to natural form was come from the reduction of flow rate by the installed artificialities such as weirs and stone weirs and by the stones or the concrete blocks attached to the stream sides of riverbanks. This phenomenon was well consistent with the usual characteristics that the accumulation is induced on upper stream of hydraulic artificialities and the erosion is induced on down stream of hydraulic artificialities. The large reduction of the deposit 1 year later after the construction showed that the riverbed eroded considerably because of the recovery of flow amount and the rise of flow rate.
In this study, using modified tracer method(Constant Rate Injection, CRI method), reaeration rates were measured in the territories of Bokha stream. In case of Kwanri stream, reaeration rates of a diversion were measured simultaneously. Propane gas and Rhodamine-WT were used as gas and dye tracer, respectively. The experimental results show that reaeration rates of the stream were ranged from 6.16 to 24.52 1/day and those of a diversion in Kwanri stream were ranged from 28.39 to 123.61 1/day. It is resulted that mean velocity of stream is a dominant factor in reaeration process and diversion significantly influence on reareation process.

It is reported that the intensity of rainfall will likely increase, on average, over the world on 2000. For water resources security, many studies for flow paths from rainfall or snowmelt to subsurface have been conducted. In Korea, few isotopic studies for characterizations of flow path have been undertaken. For a better understanding of how water derived from atmosphere moves to subsurface and from subsurface to stream, an analysis of precipitation and stream water using oxygen-18 and deuterium isotopes in a small watershed, Dorim-cheon, Seoul, was conducted with high resolution data. Variations of oxygen-18 in precipitation greater than 10 (δ18Omax = −1.21, δ18Omin = −11.23) were observed. Isotopic compositions of old water (groundwater) assumed as the stream water collected in advance were −8.98 and −61.85 for oxygen and hydrogen, respectively. Using a two-component mixing model, hydrograph separation of the stream water in Dorim-cheon was conducted based on weighted mean value of δ18O. As a result, except of instant dominance of rainfall, contribution of old water was dominant during the study period. On average, 71.3% of the old water and 28.7% of rainfall contributed to the stream water. The results show that even in the small watershed, which is covered with thin soil layer in granite mountain region, the stream water is considerably influenced by old water inflow rather than rainfall.
Small streams, despite their rich ecosystems, face challenges in vegetation assessment due to the limitations of traditional, time-consuming methods. This study presents a groundbreaking approach, combining unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs), convolutional neural networks(CNNs), and the vegetation differential vegetation index (VDVI), to revolutionize both assessment and management of stream vegetation. Focusing on Idong Stream in South Korea (2.7 km long, 2.34 km2 basin area)with eight diverse revetment methods, we leveraged high-resolution RGB images captured by UAVs across five dates (July-December). These images trained a ResNeXt101 CNN model, achieving an impressive 89% accuracy in classifying vegetation cover(soil, water, and vegetation). This enabled detailed spatial and temporal analysis of vegetation distribution. Further, VDVI calculations on classified vegetation areas allowed assessment of vegetation vitality. Our key findings showcase the power of this approach:(a) TheCNN model generated highly accurate cover maps, facilitating precise monitoring of vegetation changes overtime and space. (b) August displayed the highest average VDVI(0.24), indicating peak vegetation growth crucial for stabilizing streambanks and resisting flow. (c) Different revetment methods impacted vegetation vitality. Fieldstone sections exhibited initial high vitality followed by decline due to leaf browning. Block-type sections and the control group showed a gradual decline after peak growth. Interestingly, the "H environment block" exhibited minimal change, suggesting potential benefits for specific ecological functions.(d) Despite initial differences, all sections converged in vegetation distribution trends after 15 years due to the influence of surrounding vegetation. This study demonstrates the immense potential of UAV-based remote sensing and CNNs for revolutionizing small-stream vegetation assessment and management. By providing high-resolution, temporally detailed data, this approach offers distinct advantages over traditional methods, ultimately benefiting both the environment and surrounding communities through informed decision-making for improved stream health and ecological conservation.
