  • Energy storage devices are necessary to obtain stable utilization of renewable energy sources. When black-out occurs, distributed renewable power sources with energy storage devices can operate under standalone mode as uninterruptable power supply. This paper proposes a dynamic response analysis with small-signal modeling for the standalone operation of a photovoltaic power generation system that includes a bidirectional charger/discharger with a battery. Furthermore, it proposes a DC-link voltage controller design of the entire power conditioning system, using the storage current under standalone operation. The purpose of this controller is to guarantee the stable operation of the renewable source and the storage subsystem, with the power conversion of a very efficient bypass-type PCS. This paper presents the operating principle and design guidelines of the proposed scheme, along with performance analysis and simulation. Finally, a hardware prototype of 1-kW power conditioning system with an energy storage device is implemented, for experimental verification of the proposed converter system.

  • In this paper, a direct method is developed to extact RF equivalent circuit of a packaged BJT without optimization. First, parasitic components of plastic package are removed from measured S-parameters using open and short package patterns. Using package do-embedded S-parameters, a direct and simple method is proposed to extract bonding wire inductance and chip pad capacitance between package lead and chip pad. The small-signal model parameters of internal BJT are next determined by Z and Y-parameter formula derived from RF equivalent circuit. The modeled S-parameters of packaged BJT agree well with measured ones, verifying the accuracy of this new extraction method.

  • In this paper, we propose a digital controller design methodology for an LLC resonant converter which has been widely used due to the advantages of low switching loss and high efficiency. We establish a mathematical model of an LLC resonant converter using the extended describing function concept and propose a controller design method based on the Ziegler Nichols control parameter tuning criteria. The voltage controller of an LLC resonant converter is designed based on the derived small signal model and the performance of the controller is verified by MATLAB simulations. The validity and the control performance of the designed voltage controller for the LLC resonant converter is analyzed through some simulations for the case of load variations and circuit modeling errors.

  • Resonant immittance converter (RIC) topologies can transform a current source into a voltage source (Type-I RICs) and vice versa (Type-II RICs), thereby making them suitable for many power electronics applications. RICs are operated at a fixed frequency where the resonant immittance network (RIN) exhibits immittance conversion characteristics. It is observed that the low-frequency response of Type-II RINs is relatively flat and that the state variables associated with Type-II RINs affect the response only at the high frequencies in the vicinity of the switching frequency. The overall response of a Type-II RIC is thus dominated by the filter response, which is particularly important for the controller design. Therefore, an approximate equivalent circuit model and a small-signal model of Type-II RICs are proposed in this paper, neglecting the high-frequency response of Type-II RINs. While the proposed models greatly simplify and speed-up the analysis, it adequately predicts the open-loop transient and small-signal ac behavior of Type-II RICs. The validity of the proposed models is confirmed by comparisons of their results with those obtained from a cycle-by-cycle simulation and with an experimental prototype.

  • In this paper, interleaved boost converter is applied as a pre-regulator in switch mode power supply. Interleaved Boost Power Factor Preregulator (IBPFP) can reduce input current ripple as a simple voltage control loop only without inner current loop, because input current is divided each 50% by two switching devices. IBPFP can be classified as three cases from duty ratio condition in continuous current mode and be carried out state space averaging small signal modeling. According to modeling, the PID controller is applied and voltage control loop is constructed for suitable design condition. From frequency domain analysis, it is verified that control system is satisfied with design condition of switch mode power supply.

  • In small signal stability analysis of power systems, eigenvalue analysis is the most useful method and the detailed modeling of generator has an important effect to the eigenvalues. Generator full model is used for precise dynamic analysis of generators and controllers while two-axis model is used for multi-machine systems because of the reduced order of the state matrix. Also, the eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients are used for optimizing controller parameters to improve system stability. This paper compare the first and second order eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of controllers using generator full model with those of two-axis model. As a result of an example, the estimated eigenvalues using the first and the second eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients using generator full model is very close to those of state matrix. Also the error ratios throughout a wide range of controller parameters is less than $1\%$.

  • A new analytical model for the static I-V characteristics of GaAs MESFET’s under optically controlled conditions in both linear and saturation region is presented in this paper. The novelty of the model lies in characterizing both photovoltaic (external, internal) and photoconductive effects. Deep level traps in the semi insulating GaAs substrate are also included in this model. Finally, effect of backgate voltage on I-V characteristics is explained analytically for the first time in literature. Small signal parameters of GaAs MESFET are derived under both dark and illuminated conditions. Some of the results are compared with reported experimental results to show the validity of the proposed model. Since accurate dc modeling is the key to accurate ac modeling, this model is very useful in the designing of photonic MMIC’s and OEIC’s using GaAs MESFET.

  • The mathematical interpretation of a practical sampler which is useful to obtain the small signal models for the peak and average current mode controls is proposed. Due to the difficulties in applying the Shannon's sampling theorem to the analysis of sampling effects embedded in the current mode control, several different approaches have been reported. However, these approaches require the information of the inductor current in a discrete expression, which restricts the application of the reported method only to the peak current mode control. In this paper, the mathematical expressions of sampling effects on a current loop which can directly apply the Shannon's sampling theorem are newly proposed, and applied to the modeling of the peak current mode control. By the newly derived models of a practical sampler, the models in a discrete time domain and a continuous time domain are obtained. It is expected that the derived models are useful for the control loop design of power supplies. The effectiveness of the derived models are verified through the simulation and experimental results.

  • Photovoltaic systems normally use a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique to continuously deliver the highest possible power to the load when variations in the insolation and temperature occur. A simple method of tracking the maximum power points (MPPs) and forcing the boost converter system to operate close to these Points is presented through deriving small-signal model and transfer function of boost converter. This paper aims at modeling boost converter including equivalent series resistance of input reservoir capacitor by state-space-averaging method and PWM switch model. In the future, properly designed controller for compensation will be constructed in real system for maximum photovoltaic power tracking control.
