  • Recently, microturbines have received attention as a small-scale distributed power generator. Since the exhaust gas carries all of the heat release, generating hot water is usual method of heat recovery from microturbine CHP (combined heat and power) systems. The power of microturbines decreases as ambient temperature increases. This study predicted micoturbine power boost by injecting hot water generated by heat recovery. Influence of injecting water at two different locations was examined. Water injection improves power, but efficiency depends much on the injection location. Injecting water at the compressor discharge shows a much higher efficiency than the combustor injection. However, the combustor injection may have as much available cogeneration heat as the dry operation, while the available heat in the compressor discharge injection is much smaller than the dry operation.

  • High-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the flame stability of the turbulent supersonic combustion in a Dual-Combustion Ramjet (DCR). The auto-ignition in a shear layer between hydrogen/carbon-monoxide syngas and air was studied at elevated enthalpy condition. Comparison of a constant area combustor and a combustor with a small divergence angle shows that the supersonic combustion has a characteristics of the lifted flame and its stability is influenced significantly by the compressibility.

  • In this study, wall to bed heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics in a conical fluidized bed combustor was investigated using computational fluid dynamics method. A two-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian model was used with applying the kinetic theory for granular flow(KTGF). The effects of the two drag models, Gidaspow and the Syamlal-O'Brien model, different inlet velocities($1.4U_{mf}{\sim}4U_{mf}$) and different particle sizes on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer were studied. The results showed that the hydrodynamic characteristics such as bed expansion ratio and pressure drop were not affected significantly by the drag models. But the heat transfer coefficient was different for the two drag models, especially at lower gas inlet velocities and small particle sizes.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis of propellant supply manifold of a sub-scale model combustor with the same combustion and acoustic resonance conditions as the real combustor was carried out. The analysis of the results is based on the shape of the manifold and the number and type of inflow channels. The manifold form of the main propellant was rounded so that the recirculation area was small and easy to manufacture. The liquid oxygen mainfold included a distributor to uniformly supply the flow, and since the kerosene manifold was directly in contact with the flame side, the inflow channel was formed at a radial $360^{\circ}$ so as to minimize the recirculation region. The liquid nitrogen manifold was configured as a radial inflow channel to reduce the velocity difference near the injector.

  • The impacts of equivalence ratio on the flow structure and flame dynamics in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). Dynamic k-equation model and G-equation flamelet model are employed as LES subgrid model for flow and combustion, respectively. As a result of mean flow field for each equivalence ratio, the increase of equivalence ratio brings about the decrease of swirl intensity through the modification of thermal effect and viscosity, although the same swirl intensity is imposed at inlet. The changes of vortical structure and turbulent intensity etc. near flame surface are occurred consequently. That is, the decrease of equivalence ratio can leads to the increase of heat release fluctuation by the more increased turbulent intensity and fluctuation of recirculation flow. In addition, the effect of inner vortex generated from vortex breakdown on the heat release fluctuation is increased gradually with the decrease of equivalence ratio. Finally, it can be identified that the variations of vortical structure play an important role in combustion instability, even though the small change of equivalence ratio is occurred.

  • A new micro reformer system consisted of a micro reformer, a microcombustor and a micro evaporator was studied experimentally and computationally. In order to satisfy the primary requirements for designing the microcombustor integrated with a micro evaporator, i.e. stable burning in a small confinement and maximum heat transfer through a wall, the present microcombustor is simply cylindrical to be easily fabricated but two-staged (expanding downstream) to feasibly control ignition and stable burning. Results show that the aspect ratio and wall thickness of the microcombustor substantially affect ignition and thermal characteristics. For the optimized design conditions, a premixed microflame was easily ignited in the expanded second stage combustor, moved into the smaller first stage combustor, and finally stabilized therein. A micro reformer system integrated with a modified microcombustor based on the optimized design condition was fabricated. For a typical operating condition, the designed micro reformer system produced 22.3 sccm hydrogen (3.61 W in LHV) in an overall efficiency of 12%.

  • The electrostatic precipitation characteristics of two kinds of fly ashes, one derived from a fluidized bed combustor(FBC), the other from a pulverized coal(PC) fired furnace, have been studied on a pilot plant. Experiments have been carried out to enhance the collection efficiency while changing the operating conditions for two kinds of coal ashes, respectively. It has been shown that collection efficiency is affected by many factors such as shape of the ashes, dust contents, humidity, and temperature, etc. Experimantal results showed that collection efficiency of the FBC ashes was higher than that of the PC fly ash in spite of the small size of the FBC ashes. The experimetal results have been applied to the collection efficiency equations to show that the modified Deutsch equation was well agreed with experiment results if modification parameter k was set to 0.6 for the fluidized bed fly ashes and to 0.43 for the pulverized coal fly ashes.

  • The effect of swirl flows un the fuel spray characteristics were investigated for various swillers in a model combustor. The interaction between the flow field and fuel spray in the main combustion tone made by frontal devices including fuel injection nozzles and swirlers. which were characterized by flow velocities, fuel droplet sizes and their distributions which were measured by APV(Adaptive Phase/Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition at 320cc/min kerosine fuel flow and 0.04kg/sec air supply. A dual swirler with circumferential two-stage swirl vanes of $40^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$ vanes in different directions and two single-stage swillers of $40^{\circ}$ vanes with 12 and 16 vanes were tested. It was found that the dual swirler has the largest recirculating zone with highest reverse flow velocity. The strongest swirl flow was found at the boundary of recirculation zone. Small fuel droplets were observed in the main axial stream and inside the recirculation zone when swirling flow field were generated by the frontal devices. These findings could give the tips on the optimal design of frontal devices to realize low emissions in gas turbine combustion.

Especially, the gas turbine engine can be easily applied to other fields and developed by domestic technology, so that the sharing of technology is planed to realize through the cooperations with academies and research institutes. In this paper, the gas turbine engine, which has the compressor ratio of 3.8, the turbine inlet temperature of l180K and the engine speed higher than 100,000 rpm, is composed of centrifugal compressor, combustor, gas generator turbine, free power turbine and gear box. The competitiveness of the gas turbine engine can be obtained from minimizing its cost by the utilization of domestic infrastructure for the performance test and the decisive outsourcing.
