Slug tests can be adopted to estimate hydraulic conductivity of the slurry trench wall backfill for its abilities to reflect the in-situ performance of the construction. A comprehensive three-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the slug test in a slurry trench wall considering the presence of bentonite cake on the interface boundaries between the wall and the surrounding soil formation. Influential factors such as wall width (i.e., proximity of wall boundary), well deviation, vertical position of well intake section, compressibility of wall backfill, etc. are taken into account in the model. A series of simulation results are examined to evaluate the bentonite cake effect in analyzing practical slug test results in the slurry trench wall. The results show that the modified line-fitting method can be used without any correction factor for the slug test in the slurry trench wall with the presence of bentonite cake. A case study is reanalyzed with the assumption of existing bentonite cake. The results are compared with the previously reported results by the approaches assuming no bentonite cake (constant-head boundary) or upper-bound solution (no-flux boundary). The case study demonstrates the bentonite cake effect and the validity of the modified line-fitting method in the estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of the slurry wall backfill.
This study is focused on the characterization of an effective hydraulic conductivity in each hydrogeologic unit assumed as an equivalent continuum medium in the granitic area. Four boreholes of 3" diameter were installed and a Multi-packer system was facilitated in the selected borehole. Various in-situ tests including the fracture logging, constant injection and fall-off tests, slug and pulse tests were carried out. A hydrogeologic unit was defined into the upper and lower zones based on the variation of fracture properties and hydraulic conductivities. The difference of the result obtained by the various hydraulic tests and the effective characterization techniques on rock mass permeability are also discussed. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the upper unit was measured by two times(5.27E-10 m/s~7.57E-10 m/s) that of the lower unit(2.45E-10 m/s~6.81E-10 m/s)through the constant injection and fall-off tests.
No analytical solution exists for evaluating in-situ hydraulic conductivity of vertical cutoff walls by analyzing slug test results. Recently, an analytical solution to interpret slug tests has been proposed for a partially penetrated well in an aquifer. However, this analytical solution cannot be directly applied to the cutoff wall because the solution has been developed exclusively for an infinite aquifer instead of a narrow cutoff wall. To consider the cutoff wall boundary conditions, the analytical solution has been modified in this study to take into account the narrow boundaries by introducing the imaginary well theory. Two boundary conditions are considered according to the existence of filter cakes: constant head boundary and no flux boundary. Generalized steady-state shape factors are presented for each geometric condition, which can be used for evaluating the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of cutoff walls. The constant head boundary condition provides higher shape factors and no flux boundary condition provides lower shape factors than the infinite aquifer, which enables to adjust the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of the cutoff wall. The hydraulic conductivities calculated from the analytical solution in this paper give about 1.2~1.7 times higher than those from the Bouwer and Rice method, one of the semi-empirical formulas. Considering the compressibility of the backfill material, the analytical solution developed in this study was proved to correspond to the case of incompressible backfill materials.
At present underground structures such as road tunnels, railway tunnels, underground petroleum storages and radioactive waste storages are being constructed in numerous places in Korea. For the construction of underground structrues, it should be accounted for natural factors (geology, hydrogeology, soil, vegetation, topography and drainage patterns) and human-social factors (land use, urbanization, population, culture and transportation). Especially, hydrogeology should be regarded as an important factor for evaluating the safety of underground structures and their impact to groundwater system around the structures. This study aimed to recognize hydrogeological characteristics of shallow formations in the area from Dongrae crossway to Seo-Dong where 45 boreholes were drilled for the construction of Line-3 subway in Busan Megacity. Slug tests for unsaturated and saturated zones were conducted on 30 boreholes in the study area. From the result of the slug tests, it was identified that average zonal hydraulic conductivity in the unsaturated zone was higher than that in the saturated zone. Besides, the slug test result in the saturated zones may reflect hydraulic properties of the upper most part of the saturated zones.
Hydrogeologic characteristics of crystalline rock including discontinuities is defined by the hydraulic data from the in situ test and by analytical method. Methodology and procedure of the in situ test are used in accordance with test purpose, site condition and characteristics of host rock Hydraulic conductivities in crystalline rock including discontinuifies such as fractured zone and joint, are defined by packer test and slug test. The results indicate Hvorslev' s theory of ground water flow in NX borehole, that the shorter of test interval is, the higher hydraulic conductivity is. This is an indicafion of the fact that the hydraulic rneasured were governed by scale effect of test interval, even at same borehole. According to the result of packer tests in two boreholes, it is understood that hydraulic conductivifies show variations according to the effect of as order of tests. In the comparison of hydraulic conductivifies from both of open borehole tests, the results are relatively well correrated in values. The hydraulic conductivity in the test intervals induding hydrogeologically significant discontinuity shows relatively higher value of hydraulic conductivity in vertical distribution of full depth.
We hydrogeologically studied a mountainous area and its vulnerability to groundwater contamination. Groundwater flow and recharge occur mainly through a network of fractures in this areaTransmissivity and storativity obtained from slug, slug interference, and pumping tests range from 3.2$\times$10$^{-3}$ to 2.0$\times$10$^{-2}$$m^2$/min and 1.3$\times$10$^{-7}$ to 9.15$\times$10$^{-4}$, respectively. The groundwater was contaminated bylivestock activities in the upgradient. The groundwater in the downgradient residential area wasthreatened by the upgradient livestock activities.

Uncontrolled landfills have been a threat to surrounding environment and human health. To examine the effect of hydrogeological properties on plume migration caused by landfill leachate, two representative landfills in Cheonan and Wonju were selected. In these landfills, seven and eight groundwater wells were installed respectively to monitor water quality and waterlevel, and to perform hydraulic and tracer tests. This study reports preliminary evaluation results including site characteristics, waterlevel measurement and slug tests.
Hydraulic falling head and slug tests were carried out in an alluvium aquifer using a borehole stability device. The hydraulic testing had proved difficult in alluvial formations of sands and gravels due to borehole collapse and unstable borehole walls within the test section. This study aims to improve the hydraulic test results by using a borehole stability device. The device can minimize the collapse of borehole walls, and the use of a filter with a constant opening ratio improves the calculations per unit area of the test section. Permeability obtained from the falling head test without a borehole stability device was 8.82 × 10−5m/sec. When the borehole stability device was installed in the same test section the measured permeability increased to 4.00 × 10−4m/sec, which is 4.5 times that obtained without the borehole device. The relatively low permeability obtained using the conventional test method is attributed to the presence of a fine-grained slime generated during drilling and a reduction of the test area in the test interval due to a gradual collapse of the borehole walls. This study considers how the use of a borehole stability device to prevent borehole collapse can influence the results of hydraulic tests in alluvial formations. It is expected that the results can be used as a basis for improving the reliability and applicability of hydraulic tests performed in alluvial aquifers.
In order to investigate the swelling behavior and fuel-cladding interaction mechanism of U-10Zr alloy metallic fuel at very low burnup, an irradiation experiment was concisely designed and conducted on the China Mianyang Research Reactor. Two types of irradiation samples were designed for studying free swelling without restraint and the fuel-cladding interaction mechanism. A new bonding material, namely, pure aluminum powder, was used to fill the gap between the fuel slug and sample shell for reducing thermal resistance and allowing the expansion of the fuel slug. In this paper, the concise irradiation rig design is introduced, and the neutronic and thermal-hydraulic analyses, which were carried out mainly using MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle) and FLUENT codes, are presented. Out-of-pile tests were conducted prior to irradiation to verify the manufacturing quality and hydraulic performance of the rig. Nondestructive postirradiation examinations using cold neutron radiography technology were conducted to check fuel cladding integrity and swelling behavior. The results of the preliminary examinations confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the design.
This study is aimed for estimating hydraulic parameters using the Cooper-Bredehoeft-Papadopulos, the Hvorslev, and the Bouwer & Rice methods at nineteen test holes in Me. Geumjeong area composed of Bulguksa granites, and for characterizing hydraulic properties at the test holes with relatioll to drill core data. The relation among hydraulic Dammeters obtained by the three methods is also considered. The study area is divided into four sub-areas to consider the hydraulic characteristics. The difference of hydraulic conductivity estimates between the injection and the withdrawal slug test may be due to penncable fracture distlibutions around the test hole and/or the disturbance of fine mateIials in the fractures induced by the pressure variation due to different mechanisms of test initiation. The hydraulic conductivity estimates detennined by the Cooper-Bredehoeft-Papadopulos, the Hvorslev and the Bouwer & Rice methods ranges from 10$^{-8}$ to lO$^{-5}$m/sec, and the ranges of average values are from 10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$m/sec. Also, the transmissivity ranges from 10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-5}$$m^2$/sec. Comparing average hydraulic conductivity by the Cooper-Bredehoeft-Papadopulos, the Hvorslev and the Bouwer & Rice methods, by the Hvorslev method has the highest values, then the Bouwer & Rice method, and the Cooper-Bredehoeft-Papadopulos method has the lowest.
