  • We propose a novel collision-avoidance algorithm for the active type RFID regarding an indoor tracking system. Several well-known collision avoidance algorithms are analyzed considering the adequacy for the indoor tracking system. We prove the superiority of the slotted ALOHA in comparison with CSMA for short and fixed length packets like an ID message in RFID. Observed results show that they are not applicable for active type RFID in terms of energy efficiency. Putting these all together, we propose a dedicated collision avoidance algorithm considering the unique features of the indoor tracking system. The proposed method includes a scheduled tag access period (STAP) as well as a random tag access period (RTAP) to address both of the static and dynamic characteristics of the system. The system parameters are determined through a quantitative analysis of the throughput and energy efficiency. Especially, some mathematical techniques have been deployed to obtain the optimal slot count for RTAP. Finally, simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed method with variations of the parameters.

  • This paper deals with the optimum design criteria for the premium efficiency of 250 kW traction induction motor, using response surface methodology (RSM) and finite element method (FEM). The focus of this paper is found firstly a design solution through the comparison of torque according to rotor bar shape, rotor dimensions variations. And secondly a mixed resolution with central composite design (CCD) is introduced and analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model. The proposed procedure allows to be optimized the rotor copper bar shape, rotor slot, rotor dimensions starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.

  • Induction motors have wide applicability in many fields, both in industrial sectors and households, for their advantages of a high efficiency and robust structure. The introduction of power-source-containing harmonics into the induction motor winding lowers its efficiency and increases its temperature, greatly affecting its operation characteristics. In this study, we performed an electromagnetic field analysis using the time-difference finite-element method with the purpose of analyzing the steady-state current characteristics of an induction motor. Additionally, we calculated the steady-state current with a method combining an electromagnetic field equation and a circuit equation. In the electromagnetic field analysis, the nonlinearity was taken into account using the Newton-Raphson method, and a backward time-difference method was employed for the time derivative term. Then, we compared the steady-state current of the induction motor obtained by calculation with the experimentally measured values, thus validating the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we analyzed the impacts of the shape and material of the rotor conductor bar of the induction motor on the steady-state current of the main winding.

  • In industrial applications, sensor networks have to satisfy specified time requirements of exchanged messages. IEEE 802.15.4 defines the communication protocol of the physical and medium access control layers for wireless sensor networks, which support real-time transmission through guaranteed time slots (GTSs). In order to improve the performance of IEEE 802.15.4 in industrial applications, this paper proposes a new traffic scheduling algorithm for GTS. This algorithm concentrates on time-critical industrial periodic messages and determines the values of network and node parameters for GTS. It guarantees real-time requirements of periodic messages for industrial automation systems up to the order of tens to hundreds of milliseconds depending on the traffic condition of the network system. A series of simulation results are obtained to examine the validity of the scheduling algorithm proposed in this study. The simulation results show that this scheduling algorithm not only guarantees real-time requirements for periodic message but also improves the scalability, bandwidth utilization, and energy efficiency of the network with a slight modification of the existing IEEE 802.15.4 protocol.

  • Duty-cycling could efficiently prolong the life time of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) by let nodes be in dormant state most of the time, and only wake up (for sending or receiving) for a very short period. Flooding is one critical operation of WSNs. Many studies have been studied to improve the delay and/or energy efficiency of flooding. In this paper, we propose a novel time slot design, and the switching decision that reduce energy consumption for the schedule-based flooding tree. Each node, if failed to receive from its parent, will look for other candidate, among its siblings to overhear the flooding packet. By accurately collect information from other siblings, each node can make the best as possible switching decision; therefore the energy efficiency of the network is improved.

  • One of the biggest problems that should be solved in present RFID systems is a reduction of identification efficiency by the collision of singals between different tags. As the number of tags, which should be identified, increases over the size of allocated round, more slots experiences the collision between them. It can causes generation of tag collision assigning the fixed round size and so, allocated round size should be regulated properly. This paper proposes the algorithm which can reduce collision between tags, and allocate specific round size dynamically for efficient tag identification. After each round is finished, the reader allocates the round size dynamically using the collision information of the slot. All collision informations of the slot consists of the number of slots which came into conflict, tags which were realized properly without any conflictions and empty slots. We used slotted aloha algorithm as the collision detection algorithm and finally, checked that this could be used very usefully when this algorithm which was proposed effectively could not know how many number of tags were exisisted through the simulation in advance.

  • It is difficult to support QoS service in existing MAC Protocols in Wireless Mesh Network environments. while DCF can not support QoS, EDCA is operated with prioritized channel access method but can not give full performance. This thesis proposes frame management method to support QoS in Multi-Media DCF(MMDCF) MAC Protocol working in wireless mesh network. MMDCF uses ACH phase in TDMA frame to perform selection and elimination. Prioritized phases's count m and Fair Elimination phases's count n determine contention level and make string probability to only one win the contention. Forced TDMA Frame release method can support QoS requirements. MMDCF results good performance and good channel efficiency to support QoS requirements better than EDCA in multimedia stream environments.

  • This paper proposes the efficient method of CSMA during an idle duration in the time slot. The hybrid TDMA/CSMA protocol is the method that shares the medium efficiently. This improves the channel efficiency and throughput by using CSMA method during the idle TDMA time slot. In CSMA duration, many devices start to compete with each other. This causes a low throughput because of a long delay and a frequent collision. In order to improve this problem, the proposed method reduces the number of devices that compete in the CSMA duration. Because the number of competed device is reduced, this proposed algorithm reduces the delay and collision probability. This decrements of delay and collision probability improve the networks. The simulation results show that the proposed limitive CSMA methods outperform any methods of hybrid TDMA/CSMA protocol.

  • An Ethernet PON(Passive Optical Network) is an economical and efficient access network that has received significant research attention in recent years. A MAC(Media Access Control) protocol of PON , the next generation access network, is based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) basically and can classify this protocol into a fixed length slot assignment method suitable for leased line supporting QoS(Quality of Service) and a variable length slot assignment method suitable for LAN/MAN with the best effort. For analyzing the performance of these protocols, we design an Ethernet PON model using OPNET tool. To establish the maximum efficiency of a network, we verify a MAC protocol and determine the optimal number of ONUs(Optical Network Unit) that can be accepted by one OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and propose the suitable buffer size of ONU based on analyzing the end-to-end Ethernet delay, queuing delay, throughput, and utilization.

  • The second-generation magnetic abrasive polishing is one of the nontraditional machining technologies newly developed. Because of the flexibility effect in magnetic abrasive polishing, the precise and mirror like surface can be obtained during this process. In this study, magnetic abrasive polishing process was applied in small grooved surface. As a result, it was seen that the flexible magnetic abrasive tool was effective to remove burrs on the edge of the groove. However, the efficiency of magnetic abrasive polishing at the slot was very low according to increasing depth and width of slot. So, correlation between geometric parameters, such as the depth and width, and surface roughness was evaluated and the minimum width for suitable polishing was found by experimental results.
