  • Tension mask assembly is positioned right behind the glass-made front panels of CRT type display devices. The frame-supported thin metal sheet contains numerous slits, through which electron beams are focused to enhance definition. Pretension is imposed on the masks, especially for enlarged flat screens, in order to avoid vibration due to acoustic or mechanical impact. High temperature assembly process subsequent to pretensioning, however, degenerates the creep resistance of common mask materials, and if tensile stress is high enough, tension on the mask may be loosened substantially due to creep deformation. In this study, the assembly is modeled as a combined structure of beams and wire array, and a numerical simulation is attempted for pretensioning followed by high temperature process. According to a model study, small amount of creep strain is likely to be generated, but its adverse influence is not negligible. Some structural modification measures to reduce the creep-induced tension loosening are proposed and evaluated. Also, optimal configuration of frame structure is sought for, which maintains high tension of masks and minimizes the possible creep of frame simultaneously.

  • This study develops a new hybrid passive energy dissipation device for seismic rehabilitation of an existing structure. The device is composed of a friction damper combined with a steel plate with vertical slits as a hysteretic damper. Analytical model is developed for the device, and the capacity of the hybrid device to satisfy a given target performance is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process. The effect of the device is verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses using seven earthquake records. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the hybrid damper and the maximum interstory drift of the SMRF with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

  • In this paper, a integrated structure of a two-element microstrip patch antenna with two feeds for GPS/PCS dual-band operation is proposed. The radiating element for PCS operation is a novel broad band low-profile cylindrical monopole top-loaded with a shorted meander patch, which gives linearly polarized conical radiation pattern and size reduction of patch due to meander line. The radiating element for GPS operation is a novel square-ring microstrip patch with truncated corners and slits. which provide circularly polarized broadside radiation patterns and size reduction due to slots. using dielectric substrate in GPS antenna of proposed antenna provide to improve isolation between two feeds and reduce size of patch. The proposed antenna achieves the bandwidth and polarization requirements of GPS and PCS systems.

  • Large AC loss from the second generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires has been one of the major bottlenecks in power applications with HTS materials. Moreover, the large power applications also require the large current capacity from the HTS wires, which makes them produce larger AC losses. In order to reduce the AC loss from the HTS conductors with large current capacity, an HTS compact cable with some striations on the superconducting layers has been proposed. In this paper, we prepared some sample HTS compact conductors with striations, and measured their magnetization loss from the external magnetic field. We also made some slits on the superconducting layer of the HTS wire by laser cutting to reduce the aspect ratio of the superconducting layers. It would make the low eddy current loss and magnetic decoupling. Finally, the magnetization losses of the sample HTS compact conductors were measured and analyzed.

  • Mathematical models have been developed to calculate hydrodynamic characteristics of perforated-wall structures. Most of the models separate the fluid regions into front and back of the wall, assume the solution in each region, and calculate the solution by using the matching condition at the wall. The matching condition involves the permeability parameter, which can be calculated by the methods proposed by Mei et al. or Sollitt and Cross. In this study, we compare these two methods. The former is advantageous because all the related variables are known, but it gives wrong result in the limit of long waves, i.e. zero transmission and perfect reflection of very long waves. In deep water, the latter predicts smaller transmission and larger reflection than the former, and vice versa in shallow water. In the latter method, the friction coefficient decreases as the wall thickness or the porosity of the wall increases.

  • A 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma source with a belt magnet assembly configuration (BMC) was developed for hyperthermal neutral beam (HNB) generation. A plasma source for high flux HNB generation should be satisfied with the requirements: low pressure operation, high density, and thin plasma. The ECR plasma source with BMC achieved high density at low operation pressure due to electron confinement enhancement caused by high mirror ratio and drifts in toroidal direction. The 2.45 GHz microwave launcher had a circularly bended WR340 waveguide with slits. The microwave E-field profile induced by the microwave launcher was studied in this paper. The E-field profile was a cups field perpendicular to B-filed at ECR zone. The optimized E-field profile and B-field were found for effective ECR heating.

  • In this paper a new wire-wire discharge system with a slit dielectric harrier has been proposed, and, its corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics have been investigated experimentally. When the slit mica barrier is installed between corona wires, instead of the grounded plate electrode, a significant increase in the generation of ozone, about 2.2 times higher than that of the conventional ones without the slit harrier, could be obtained. Photographs show that this type of discharge system with a slit barrier was found to produce a corona discharge twice, once from the upper and bottom corona wires, and. again from both sides of surfaces and slits of the slit barrier. As a result, the proposed discharge system has the potential to increase significantly ozone production and it may be useful as an effective means for removing pollutant gases.

  • This paper describes the automation of an object generator and an image analyser in a knife scan OTF equipment to enhance the accuracy of OTF measurement. Pinholes and slits of various size in the object generator are used as an objects. A fishtail edge is mounted to the image analyzer and is translated to the direction of 45 degree angle with the horizontal to measure MTF simultaneously in the radial and tangential azimuths. The stepping motor control unit and software for the image analyzer are modified and the accuracy of this equipment is evaluated by measuring the OTF of SIRA group 50 mm standard lens.

  • This paper presents an advanced patterned vertical aligned nematic liquid crystal (APVA) mode as a way of improving the transmittance of the conventional patterned, vertically-aligned nematic liquid crystal (PVA) mode. The APVA was characterized by multi-electrodes, which play an important role in generating a horizontal electric field that prevents LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between top and bottom slits in PVA mode. The proposed APVA mode focused on improving dramatically the transmittance with excellent image quality. In the simulation, the APVA mode improved the transmittance by more than 22%, compared to the conventional VA modes. Therefore, it is useful to upgrade the LCD display quality.

  • Many studies have been focused on how to manufacture ultra light metal structures and optimize them. In this study, we introduced a new idea to make sandwich panels with quasi-Kagome truss cores. First, metal sheets with a peculiar pattern of slits were expanded to be meshes, they are crimped into a triangular wave pattern, and then one third of struts were bent reversely to be quasi-Kagome trusses. Finally, two face sheets were bonded on the upper and the lower sides. The bending strength was estimated through elementary mechanics for the sandwich specimens with two kinds of face sheet the results of estimation were compared with the those of finite element analyses and experiments.
