  • Brass specimen, copper based alloy was prepared in cubic form about $1cm{\times}1cm{\times}1cm$ in volume. The specimens were mechanically compressed in one direction until the dimension distorted to 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% in length. The compressed specimens with 80% distorted in length were then heat treated in $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Microscopic examination was made on both compressed and heat treated specimens. The results obtained from the study were as follows: 1. Grain boundary and twin phenomenon was clearly seen in 0% and 20% compressed cases. Slip bands was appeared in 40% cases and distributed equally as well as twin. 2. The first evidence of slip bands was observed in 20% and the bands grew thicker and denser as the compression increased. 3. The density of the bands were reduced after annealing in $200^{\circ}C$ and completely disappeared at $300^{\circ}C$ cases. 4. Recrystallization was noticed unevenly in $300^{\circ}C$ cases and the evidence of twin was observed in these crystallized area. 5. In $400^{\circ}C$ cases the grain boundary was evenly found and the twin phenomenon was clearly observed. Grain boundary and twin was noticeably formed in size according to the annealing temperature increased.

  • This paper aims to identify the causes and mechanisms of contraction-expansion noise in refrigerators and proposes noise reduction methods. Contraction-expansion noise generated in refrigerators is mainly due to stick-slip phenomenon occurring on the contact surface between inner parts. Friction experiments were conducted to identify the factors causing the stick-slip phenomenon. Furthermore, the vibration level of the internal components was measured to determine the characteristics and location of the contraction-expansion noise. Based on the experimental results, experiments have been conducted to verify the noise characteristics for each factor. From this, it was confirmed that the friction experiment and the refrigerator contraction-expansion noise generation location and frequency were the same. The vibration level also increased as the vertical force was increased due to load loading. Also, it was confirmed that the contraction-expansion noise was reduced when the surface roughness was increased. Therefore, it was concluded that increasing the surface roughness of the contact surface in the same way as the results of the friction experiment was the method of reducing contraction-expansion noise.

  • Interests in micro/nano-particles have been greatly increasing due to their wide applications in various fields such as environmental and medical sciences as well as engineering. In order to obtain a fundamental understanding of the tribological characteristics at particle-surface contact interface, frictional behaviors according to load/pressure and materials were obtained by using atomic force microscope(AFM) cantilevers with different stiffnesses and tips. Lateral contact stiffnesses were observed in various tip-surface contact situations. Experimental results show that stick-slip friction behavior occurs even when the colloidal probes with a particle of a few micrometers in diameter, which have a relatively large contact area and lack a well-shaped apex, were used. This indicates that atomic stick-slip friction may be a more common phenomenon than it is currently thought to be. Also, experimental results were investigated by considering the competition between the stiffness of the interatomic potential across the interface and the elastic stiffnesses of the contacting materials and the force sensor itself.

  • This paper proposes a methodology for the small-displacement-movement of a piston and develops a hybrid control algorithm for the precision position control of a pneumatic rodless cylinder. The pneumatic system uses the voltage-proportional solenoid valves to minimum valve switching since the on/off type valves are create diffculties for accurate position control and induce a lot of valve switching. For the accurate position control a methodology for the small-displacement-movement of the piston is developed and identified experimentally. The main consideration on the development of the hybrid control law is to eliminate a stick-slip phenomenon in the pneumatic control system. This paper addresses these critical issues and presents experimental results for the pneumatic control system.

  • This paper develops a control method that is composed of the proportional control algorithm and the learning algorithm based on the recurrent neural networks (RNN) for the position control of a pneumatic rodless cylinder. The proportional control algorithm is suggested for the modeled pneumatic system, which is obtained easily simplifying the system, and the RNN is suggested for the compensation of the modeling errors and uncertainties of the pneumatic system. In the proportional control, two zones are suggested in the phase plane. One is the transient zone for the smooth tracking and the other is the small movement zone for the accurate position control with eliminating the stick-slip phenomenon. The RNN is connected in parallel with the proportional control for the compensation of modeling errors and frictions, compressibilities, and parameter uncertainties in the pneumatic control system. This paper experimentally verifies the feasibility of the proposed control algorithm for such pneumatic systems.

  • Porous alumina ceramics are involved in many industrial applications due to the exceptional properties of these products. This study addresses the preparation of porous alumina ceramics using hollow microspheres as a pore-forming agent and slip casting as a green-body-forming technique. A uniform distribution of pores is a basic requirement of a porous material. This study investigates three different slurry systems, i.e., as-prepared alumina slurry, alumina slurry electrostatically dispersed by hydrochloric acid (HCl), and slurry dispersed by the commercial dispersant 'Darvan C-N'. At a low viscosity, the hollow microspheres in the slurry tend to float, which causes a non-uniform pore distribution. To avoid this phenomenon, the viscosity of the slurry was increased to the extent that the movement of hollow microspheres ceased in the slurry. As a result, a uniform pore distribution was achieved.

  • Theoretical equations for an influence of fiber breaks on the frictional heating phenomenon in a uniaxially fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composite are formulated. The microslip and gross slip phases are considered for deriving the equations. During a complete loading/unloading cycle, the work done against friction is derived. In order to estimate interfacial shear in a unidirectionally reinforced ceramic matrix composite which has fiber fractures as well as matrix cracks, parametric studies using the derived equations are done. In a case of less than 10% fiber fractures, additional frictional work due to fiber breaks can be neglected compared to the rest.

  • Fiber reinforced plastic composites is widely used to make be lightening of aircraft and automotive owing to having high specific strength and specific modulus. And it is very important to know a charge shape in order to have good products in the compression molding. In particular, the product such as a bumper beam is composed of the random and unidirectional composite mats. Its deformation and charge shape are very different by stack type of random and unidirectional mats. In this paper, the characteristics of flow fronts such as a bulging phenomenon for step-type random/unidirectional composite mats and slip parameters are studied numerically. And the effects of viscosity ratio and stack type on the mold filling parameters are also discussed.

  • The friction and wear behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was studied experimentally under dry sliding conditions against SCM440(AISI 4140) disks with a different surface roughness and hardness at the low sliding speeds and the high pressures on a pin-on-disk apparatus. Under the low disk surface roughness value the earsplitting noise and stick-slip were occurred. The increased adhesion friction and wear factor with stick-slip made the friction and wear behavior worse. Under the high disk surface hardness the break and falling-off of carbon fibers were accelerated. The carbon fibers fallen off from the matrix were ground into powder between two wear surfaces and this phenomenon caused a abrasive friction and wear factor to increase. So the friction and wear behavior became worse. With the transfer film made of wear particles formed on a disk, the carbon powder film formed on a pin lowered a friction coefficient.
