The friction and wear behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was studied experimentally under dry sliding conditions against SCM440(AISI 4140) disks with different surface roughness and hardness at the low sliding speeds and the high pressures on a pin-on-disk apparatus. Under the low disk surface roughness value the earsplitting noise and stick-slip were occurred. The increased adhesion friction and wear factor with stick-slip made the friction and wear behavior worse. Under the high disk surface hardness the break and falling-off of carbon fibers were accelerated. The carbon fibers fallen off from the matrix were ground into powder between two wear surfaces and this phenomenon caused abrasive friction and wear factor to increase. So the friction and wear behavior became worse. With the transfer film made of wear particles formed on a disk, the carbon powder film formed on a pin lowered a friction coefficient.
The friction and wear behavior of undulated surfaces made of tin base babbit are examined experimentally at the low sliding speed with severe loading condition. Steel is used as counterface disk material under pin-on-disk type sliding condition. Undulated surfaces can improve the friction and wear properties under dry friction condition since undulated surfaces trap wear particles in their cavities and prohibit wear particles from agglomerating. However, under boundary lubrication condition, friction and wear properties of undulated surfaces are inferior to those of flat surfaces. It is shown that land width and the ratio of wear volume to cavity volume are the most important factors in friction behavior of undulated surfaces under dry friction condition, and there exists optimum land width minimizing friction and wear of undulated surfaces.
Wear of steel plate was measured during unlubricated sliding against TiC composites. These composites consist of round TiC grains and steel matrix. TiC grain itself exhibits low surface roughness and round shape, which does not bring its counterpart into severe damage from friction. In our work a classical experimental design was applied to find out a dominant factor in counterpart wear. The analysis of the data showed that only the applied load has a significant effect on the counterpart wear. Wear rate of counterpart increased non-linearly with applied load. Amount of wear was discrepant from expectation of being in proportion to the load by analogy with friction force. Our experimental result from treating matrix variously revealed bimodal wear behavior between the composites and counterpart where a mode seems to result from the special lubricant characteristic of TiC grains, and the other is caused by metal-to-metal contact. The two wear mechanisms were discussed.
The friction and wear behaviors of ceramics against steels with lubricants were investigated and compared with those observed in air. Lubrications wbre done by a water and a commercial engine oil as received. The investigated ceramics were $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$. Steels with 0.2 wt.% C were heat treated to obtain tempered structure. A cylinder-on-plate tribometer with rotated sliding motion was used to carry out the experiments. In the experiments reported here, the ranges of different testing speeds and loads were used. It was found that the friction and wear characteristics of tested pairs were significantly influenced by environments. In water and oil environments the wear of ceramics was reduced from 10$^{-6}$ g/s down to 10$^{-8}$ g/s in dry sliding at the same values of the frictional power which are the products of the friction coefficient, the load and the sliding speed. SiC showed excellent wear resistant behavior in water sliding, which was the lowest among tested ceramics, but it was, very poor in oils. In case of $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the wear rates were very low under oil environment, but the highest in water. The wear rates of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were very low in both lubricating conditions at low values of the frictional power, but high at high values of the frictional power.
Dry-sliding-wear behavior of Fe-18Cr-l0Mn steel with various carbon and nitrogen contents was characterized, and the effect of carbon and nitrogen contents on the wear was investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at room temperature against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball using a pin-on-disk wear tester. Applied wear loads were varied from 10 N to 100 N, and the sliding distance was fixed as 720 m. Worn surfaces and the wear debris of the steel were examined using an SEM to find out the wear mechanism. It was found that the Fe-18Cr-10Mn with both carbon and nitrogen exhibited superior wear resistance to the steel with only nitrogen. The wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy increased with the increase of the carbon content. The excellent wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy was explained by the increased strain-hardening capability with the interstitial atoms.
In order to gain better understanding of wear behaviors of TiN-coated boron cast iron, tests and analyses were conducted with block-on disc type tribometer. TiN layer of thickness $2 \mu m$ and $4 \mu m$, coated by cathodic arc evaporation process, were experimentally investigated with the variation of applied load and sliding speed under dry sliding condition. Wear characteristics were expressed in terms of the three-dimentional wear map as well as the wear rate vs sliding speed and load. Comparisons of wear and friction characteristics between coated cast irons and uncoated cast irns were also made. Wear mechanism of TiN layer was explained in view of surface interaction between the mating surfaces. The thicker coating exhibited higher hardness and adhesion strength. the significance of stresses at the surface and in the subsurface was briefly discussed in relation to the wear behavior.
In order to investigate the wear behavior of aluminum alloy depended on different hardness of the mating tool steel, sliding wear tests were conducted. It was found that the wear characteristics pattern of aluminum alloy for sliding speed was not affected by the hardness of the mating tool steel. However, the effects of the hardness of the mating tool steel exhibited only in relatively low sliding speed ranges. At these ranges, the wear rate of aluminum alloy decreased when increasing the hardness of the mating tool steel. This was attributed by the fact that $Al_2O_3$ particles released from the aluminum worn surface were crushed and embedded on the mating worn surface with high hardness level. At the high sliding speed ranges, wear of aluminum alloy was hardly occurred by the formation of thick $Al_2O_3$ film on the worn surface, regardless of the hardness of the mating tool steel.
The friction and wear behavior of molybdenum disulfide filled polymer composites sliding against metal has been investigated using pin-on-disc machine and microscope. The observed wear rates were reduced by the addition of MoS$_2$ to nylon and this can be attributed to the homogenous transfer of MoS$_2$ to the counteddace thereby modifying sliding conditions. The friction of filled and unfilled nylon was increased with increasing sliding speed, and the catastropic wear rate was occurred at high normal load. This have been explained by thermal degradation. In the case of HDPE, however, the wear rate was not always reduced by the addition of MoS$_2$ and the influence of MoS$_2$ was mainly even the opposite. Filled and unfilled HDPE had lower values of friction and wear rate than those of nylon. Micrographs appeared that the delamination of the worn surface in nylon/MoS$_2$ composite occurred and revealed that the worn surface of HDPE presented a number of characteristic features as wear grooves, pulls, and smears and crescents.
The effect of silver particles on the sliding behavior of bearing steels was studied experimentally by using a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were performed in ambient air, dry air and vacuum. Disks of AISI 52100 were silver-coated by a thermal evaporation method, and the effects of silver particle transfer on friction were analyzed. In order to understand further the mechanism of silver particle transfer and its effect on friction and wear, pre-compressed silver particles were artificially introduced into the friction interface and the results were compared to those of silver-coated specimens. Results showed that the introduced silver particles produced transfer layers and resulted in low friction. It also showed that this low friction is closely related to the characteristic behavior of transfer layers. Shakedown occurred at the friction interface affected the friction and wear.
